View Full Version : V12 flywheel
chucksrt 03-12-2009, 06:09 PM Does anyone have a used/bad flywheel that they would part with? I have a 540i and want to match up the flywheels to see if this flywheel will fit or can be modified to fit the M62. The V12's disc surface area is larger than the one on my 540i. Any hepl would be great!!!! PM or email me chucksrt@verizon.net
thanks,
Chuck
BTW I love the 8 series!!!! not many cars even come close to it's looks today.
smokum 03-12-2009, 08:28 PM LOL good luck with that there isnt many 6speed manuels around for starters.
have you tryed the wrecking yards?
rcrad6653 03-12-2009, 08:35 PM First of all you are asking for a semi rare item in the first place, as there are relatively few 850i 6spds out there so it would be unusual for someone to 'just have one layin' around'. The CSI clutch upgrade that UUC and others offer using the 280mm disk is much easier to get, and that will fit both the M62 and V12 crank, and it's going to have the proper triggering ring on it that an 8er flywheel won't.

850CSi flywheel won't work on your M62... no ignition timing ring.

chucksrt 03-13-2009, 01:42 AM yea that is what i am trying to get but without the $2500 price tag. I have used fidenza flywheels before but they normally only cost about $600 and knowing that makes $2500 hard to bite off. I would rather have a custom one off from fidenza for $1500 and maybe even get a group buy so I don't eat all of the cost. The UUC set is very nice but for a car that is only worth 4 times that it makes it hard to spend that kind of $ on it. I love your product but your a LAST resort!!!

It's important to compare apples to apples.
The typical lightweight flywheel is about a 10.5" disk, 3/4" thick, with an off-the-shelf starter ring. Your $600 price is only the the flywheel. You're usually at $1000-$1300 total including clutch depending on choice.
The UUC V8/V12 flywheel is a about a 13" disk, 2" thick, with a custom-machined starter ring and a custom-machined ignition timing ring. The $2050 price (not $2500) includes the complete V12 clutch kit, which costs approximately 3X what a typical clutch costs.
If anything, the V12 clutch conversion flywheel kit is underpriced for what you get.
Neither Fidanza nor any other flywheel manufacturer can "custom make" one of these for you... only UUC owns the fabricated ignition timing rings. Other companies offering anything similar are installing used rings cut off of original flywheels, which have about a 20% failure rate from distortion.
Sometimes it's not such a good idea to re-invent the wheel, as it were. :D

rcrad6653 03-13-2009, 12:27 PM The fact that Rob owns UUC notwithstanding, he knows what he's talking about here and his price statements are accurate. You aren't going to get off cheap any way you go on this deal, and you haven't said what your ultimate goal is..... racing? hot street? size is everything? In my reasearch for the manual conversion of the 8er I looked at everything from your stock clutch to the 280mm UUC V12 conversion package, of which I had with the cerra-metallic disk. In my case it wasn't just the clutch and flywheel but the overall cost of a high quality 6spd conversion considering each component of the whole driveline. Rob calls it the 'driving miss daisey' setup but I decided I wanted no issues (real or imagined) with rollover noise associated with the ltw flywheel and the sale of the used UUC setup (15k mi) paid for a new 260mm (for the E34) setup that I can utilize, not have the SAC feature, and shift on down the road with better than factory smoothness, reliability, and performance. After all, this is going behind a stock M60 V8 in a 2 ton-plus car and any lost benefit of the favorable rotating mass reduction I felt was offset by a much better diff ratio matched to the tranny gears. Granted, I have more options than you do because I don't need the timing trigger.... you however DO need it. I could bolt up a stock V12 flywheel on my '95 840 and go but you can't and it would'nt be cost effective at all to convert one. UUC makes a good product tailored to you specifically. IMO you'd be better served to pony up for his new or trying to locate a used UUC setup if you want to save a little money, and you can replace a worn friction disk on the flywheel for less than a 100 bux. They do come available (I've seen 4 in the last year).
chucksrt 03-13-2009, 06:55 PM Thanx for all the feedback!!! I am going to start building it as race/street car. I'm not really interested in taking it to the track for anything other than getting a time slip, once i've got an idea how quick it is I just want to show it and sunday drive it because that is pretty much what I do with it now. I have an extra M62 and I will start building (or should I say start buying parts) for after my wife gives birth. I enjoy building cars that aren't normally built up for the wow factor but after talking to you 840/850 guys I would really love to be in the driver seat of one of them!!!!!
8eights 03-13-2009, 08:34 PM It's better you don't get into one, Too hard to get out of!!!-)
Check this linik at Gerry's, Maybe he has another flywheel option for ya...

Is there any hope for those that really want to swap there auto for the 6speed or other tranny?
8eights 03-13-2009, 11:49 PM It's been done, Takes patience and knowledge or a unique parts car.
8Tech 03-15-2009, 06:58 PM The crankshaft bolt pattern is different on the V8 to the V12 so it will not work. How come a flywheel manufacturer wouldn't know that?
Rich 1992 850i 03-15-2009, 08:56 PM I have a used flywheel that came off my 92 850i 6-speed. I ended up replacing the flywheel during a clutch replacement as I was told it was worn.
smokum 03-15-2009, 08:59 PM You new rich? dont think i have seen you here before?
If so welcome, some one here will probly want that flywheel.
chucksrt 03-15-2009, 09:00 PM I can't PM you but if you could email me I would like to get your old flywheel! Chucksrt@verizon.net
