View Full Version : Horsepower
To any of the Hawaii Bmw guys...
is there any place here in Honolulu that you can go to to check or test how much horsepower your car get? If so where and how much?
thanks
Oni
The Beastmaster 08-02-2003, 08:45 PM I think there is a dyno in Sand Island at some place called BSM?

The Beastmaster 08-02-2003, 09:27 PM I don't know if the shop is still there, but they used to advertise in the Buy and Sell. I think the place was owned by a guy named Bodie? I never went there, but friends dyno'd their cars there.
i looked up the name online and found out the name is BSM Performance.....but Shoots i just called there and wrong #
so i called 411 to get the number and directory said there is no listing for them.....
bummers....LOL...but thanks Beastmaster
oh BTW thanks for telling me about the exhaust from Gene V.
i put it on this morning took about 45 mins altogether and it looks and sounds much beeter then the stock one.
Thanks Gene & Beastmaster

TallKDR 08-02-2003, 09:41 PM Have you thought about a Gtech Pro?
the concept seems valid... I have borrowed and used one many times, and I cant say how accurate the initial HP reading is, but it IS consistent. So before rebuilding my 280Z engine I had 132-133 on severalruns, and afterwards ~143. Not sure if thats what a dyno would read, but overall you can be assured I gained power with a new engine.
Im sure if you wanted to test mods this could do it well. And it also does 1/4 mile times, 0-60, 60-0, and even skid pad. I love physics. haha
whats Gtech Pro?
still kinda new to this so i stay learning as i go along
The Beastmaster 08-02-2003, 11:35 PM It's a device that uses a gyro to tell you how fast you do your 0-60 and 1/4 mile runs. It also measures hp and I think torque. It is small, about the size of a Motorola T720. I have one but never used it.
how come you never used it yet?
Maybe one day i can try it to see how much HP i have
:)

Gene V 08-03-2003, 02:32 AM Oni,
Glad the exhaust is fits and is working for you.
The Dynojet website lists the following shops on Oahu as having a Dynojet dyno:
BSM Performance
2022 Republican St, Honolulu
841-3966
Naka's Car CAre
94-459 Ukee St, Waipahu
676-8937
SG Engineering
1546 10th Ave, Honolulu
539-4549

IslandS62 08-03-2003, 02:38 AM There is a place on the windward side with a Dyno. I've passed it a few times, near Exhaust Systems Hawaii. Don't know the name though.
I have a GTech Pro also but did not use it much. Hard to set up and you need a flat empty stretch of road to test. It was sort of fun to hook up and see what your lateral G's were when you turn.
It measures HP, 1/4 mile, 0-60, accelerative and lateral G's. Escort now makes a competing product, and G-tech now has an improved version.
maybe we should have a BMWCCA Dyno day?
The Beastmaster 08-03-2003, 02:47 AM Good idea Mr. President!
Gene:
yea the exhaust bolted right on and runs good and just buffed the stainless steel tips and looks great!!! Much mahaloz. Also called the BSM Performance and that number 841-3966 is some lady. but i will try to call those other places tomorrow either before or after me and the ohana go to the movies...hehehe
IslandS52:
that idea of a BMWCCA Dyno day sounds great and would deffinatly attend. The next time im on the winward side i shall check that place out by Exhaust systems.
Mahalo guys!

Speaking of horsepower....
ive been looking around for a performance chip and notice that most places online the price is the same...is there any difference in the brand? Here are the prices
Tuner Motorsport: 249.00
Jim comforti: 249.00
Autowerks 249.00
Dinan bmw-Honolulu 269.10
any advice is good.
Gene V 08-03-2003, 02:39 PM Jim Conforti makes the chip for Turner, they're one in the same...
oh i didnt know that
the place that i saw the Jim chip was at this web site

The Beastmaster 08-03-2003, 05:41 PM There has been much debate about chips and most of the people will swear by Jim C as his chip seems to give better power throughout the entire range. Dinan seems to give power only at WOT.
The Beastmaster 08-03-2003, 05:46 PM Speaking of chips, there's a whole bunch of chips on EBay right now. There's lots of Dinan and 1 Turner chip. Just check your ECU to make sure you get the right one.
Gene V 08-03-2003, 06:20 PM I think the major chip makers are J.C., Dinan, AATuning, and Autothority...if you do a "search" you'll come up with tons of info...
I would stay away from Autothority, I had one of their chips in my last car (Jetta VR6) and I had a lot of pinging at throttle tip-in...too much ignition advance I think...
Beastmaster
How's the reliability of those chips on ebay....are they trustworthy? I thought about bidding at one time but they looked a little iffy.
so the best bet is to get the Jim comforti one and to stay away from Autothority...hehehe :)

The Beastmaster 08-04-2003, 02:18 AM I got RD chips for my 750il from EBay and they work fine. I got some Dinan chips from Roundel and they work fine, too. I believe Dinan has a lifetime warranty on their chips, but check Dinan's site first as I cannot guarantee this info.
Jim C. that's the ticket!
Wow lifetime huh...gonna have to check on that
looks like im gonna get Jimmy for me.
thanks.
will call those places on monday that Gene posted earlier to see where the Dyno is...hehehe...not that i got that much Hp anyway...:)
ok it looks like that BSM Performance doesnt exist anymore and Naka's car care isnt using the dyno right now b/c the setups gots some problems and SG engineering sold the business...its now called Endless Garage-8341777. Called there and still waiting for them to get back to me.

Gordon L 08-06-2003, 01:34 PM Hey Oni check out this site www.dsylva-tech.ca/ This is the good stuff, have one of these in my 535i.
thanks G.
im trying to see which one would fit my car
Gordon L 08-06-2003, 07:48 PM which you might want to check out too! BTW, what year is your 325i?
im kinda iffy on the chips on ebay...
its a 1994 325i with a '97 M3 exhaust :)
coutesy of Gene gotta give props...
Gordon L 08-06-2003, 08:02 PM I know what you mean (don't wanna hurt the baby)but I actually bought a chip on ebay for the 325i and it's quite good, but can't say if it's the best. Actually, I think most and probably all of the ebay chips are just knock offs.
True dat! im most likely to get a Jimmy C.
im also trying to make a heat shield for my intake but i cant find a place that sells the right type of weather stipping which is holding the project back.
Gene V 08-06-2003, 09:15 PM Originally posted by onik

you might try some type of hose (heater hose maybe) that you can cut a slit in lenghtwise and fit over the shield to give you a finished edge...
