The E31 is 2.5 in and 2.5 out. The Magnaflow is 2.25 in. __________________ 8eights 03-12-2009, 02:03 PM I agree from what i've seen, I wonder if they all have the same inlet? Mines are 14816 with a 2.25 in. Inlet/Dual 3.50 in. Outlet, Stainless Steel/Polished, Fits nicely between the rear diffusor. motorisym850 03-12-2009, 02:25 PM I agree from what i've seen, I wonder if they all have the same inlet? How would you rate/ describe your setup? Deep... Loud.... Raspy on full throttle.....??? Do you pic of how those 3.5in look on your car? Thank you in advance for your input. 8eights 03-12-2009, 02:36 PM I replaced the resonators with 2 glass packs, $40.00 bucks each, The original resonators weighed a ton, I lost the converters too, Got a few ponies from that!-) With the Magnaflow's, It's sounds deep and Throatty when i get on it, If i cruise, You'll hardly notice it, After 4k Rpm's, It changes to smile mode. Will I have a hard time finding a shop that will remove the cat converter? motorisym850 03-12-2009, 03:47 PM I replaced the resonators with 2 glass packs, $40.00 bucks each, The original resonators weighed a ton, I lost the converters too, Got a few ponies from that!-) With the Magnaflow's, It's sounds deep and Throatty when i get on it, If i cruise, You'll hardly notice it, After 4k Rpm's, It changes to smile mode. Glass packs can be bought at your local muffer shop. Many of the musclecars still use them. My question to you 8eight... what about smog inspection with no cat in Cali? I'm guessing you'll put it back on? BMW is notorious for not passing smog. Even the newer one's. One would have to get the cat nice and hot to pass it. 8eights 03-12-2009, 03:51 PM No comment!--) motorisym850 03-12-2009, 03:54 PM No comment!--) Silence is golden....:cool LouM 03-12-2009, 04:32 PM Seems to me that by going to a smaller inlet pipe diameter you would be restricting the ability of the engine to get the exhaust gas out. Wouldn't the engine be using some of its' HP to push the exhaust out of a smaller diameter (restriction) pipe? I believe that the scavenging of the gases out of the cylinder is accomplished by the header pipe length from the head to the collector. From there. it seems to be a matter of opening up the exhaust to let it easily flow out. During my muscle car days I remember guys saying that an gasoline engine is an air pump. The more air you can pump in and out the more HP you can generate. Open things up to let it breathe. I'm sure there is a limit to this. But I can't recall anyone ever saying to go smaller on the intake or exhaust. LouM... carspainc.com 03-12-2009, 04:39 PM Did you remove the resonator as well? How would you rate/ describe your setup? Koizumi 03-12-2009, 07:50 PM I chopped out the center resonator. Like 8eights said, it weighs a ton. I have straight pipes from the cats back to Magnaflow cans. I had to cut the resonator since the car droned at 1900rpm. Without the resonator, no drone. Car is quiet until stomped on, then the car growls mean! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A57qo8rvKp4 Esoteric83 03-12-2009, 10:26 PM I want my 8 to sound JUST like THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But will glass packs give me the same sound also? TxGR8White 03-12-2009, 10:54 PM I want my 8 to sound JUST like THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But will glass packs give me the same sound also? depends... I have the V12 and did the straight pipes from cats back to MAGNAFLOWS. Car had a terrible "drone" at highway speed that would eventually drive you crazy. I then went with 18" long in-line glass pack resonators (one on each side) and although it helped a bit, the droning was still there. The next step was putting the BMW center resonator back in and now the car sounds perfect (much like the youtube clip above). I think the V8's need a different set-up though as witnessed by the clip and the fact that that particular car does not have resonators. It all boils down to what you can live with. I know of one crazy ass in NY that has headers out to MAGNAFLOW cans with nothing in between. That sounds like a Formula One Race car, which is a cool sound, but not if you plan to drive for any period of time.... smokum 03-13-2009, 06:17 PM http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd109/smokumxxx/th_MVI_0544.jpg (http://s220.photobucket.com/albums/dd109/smokumxxx/?action=view¤t=MVI_0544.flv) 850i Magnaflows with res Auraraptor 03-13-2009, 06:27 PM What is the OEM cat In/Out diameter? This model has the larger outlet with longer tips. Just like 8eights and Koizumi's. It will arrive at my local muffer shop on Tuesday (as they only had one in stock). I'll try it without the resonator first and see how I like it. Otherwise, the glass packs will be added. 8eights 03-13-2009, 08:29 PM Congrats!!!
