View Full Version : Profile of an 8 series owner...
sjflat 03-10-2009, 06:13 AM People are quite often suprised when they see what car I drive and I guess when you compare me to a lot of my friends, an 8 series is quite different.
So yeah, I jJust thought I'd see what sort of jobs other 8 series owners have and how old owners generally are. I guess in the UK people my age who are into cars would tend to aim for Skylines/Imprezzas and the like but I love that the 8 series is a little different.
I'm a 25 year old male working as a Structural Engineer (fairly junior) in the UK. There are a few petrol heads at work (one of our directors has an Integra Type R and another guy races MGs) but generally the car park is full of Audi A3s and Volvos.

austin8 03-10-2009, 07:15 AM I am 25 with a college degree and I work at a bar and a lawfirm for now. I have always loved the e31 I remember seeing my first e31 when I was 6 or 7 in Andorra and it happened to be a burgundy convertible which at the time I didn't realize was totally custom. There are definitely not that many in Austin so I feel very lucky to own one.
Noggie 03-10-2009, 08:13 AM Male, 31, live in Norway, work as a Service and commissioning enginer world wide for on/offshore Oilfield drilling equipment.
Had my 850 for close to 3 years, and have had BMW's for the past 8 years.
Was very into track driving a while back so I have modified an e36 for track use some years ago.
This car died in 2006 on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Then I got the 850 a car I had wanted for years, and I have put alot of work an modifications done to her.
My 850 is my nice weather/weekend car, and I have an e46 M3 for a daily driver.
dannyacs 03-10-2009, 11:21 AM 25, male, working in London in banking. My boss who drives a 2007 Porsche convertible once said the 8 is an old person's car!?
Fatandre 03-10-2009, 12:21 PM I am 20, as for now I am a college student and work with school as a salesman. Fell in love with the first 8ht that I saw and ended on buying the one I saw first. Actually a funny story.
Iamnotkento 03-10-2009, 02:10 PM 19,male. working full time and going to college at same time. My friend's uncle had one and fell in love with it.
XTREMETUNING 03-10-2009, 02:39 PM 30 :eyecrazy, Male. I have an EE degree and work for my fathers sports & entertainment company. I bought my first 8 about three years ago and bought the Dinan 8 about a year and a half ago... its a sickness! :redspot

samsonevickis 03-10-2009, 03:13 PM 22, Male, in college and I sell fine jewelry.
Bought my 8 when I was 21 and wanted because I loved Camaro's growing up, but grew to love BMW. My dad is the one who pointed out the similarity to the Trans Am...
It's like a German Knightrider.
I'm sure it's what Hasselhoff Drives when he's in town. LOL
Koizumi 03-10-2009, 03:16 PM I love my 8 :D
E31Gill 03-10-2009, 03:35 PM 34 years old , owned my 850 from age 31 - lusted after one from age 16..lol. I have a degree in information systems and a degree in electrical and electronic engineering. I am a Air Traffic Control Engineer working in a busy Control Centre making tactical decisions for our busy airways. My daily ride is a XC90 and the 850 is used for pleasure. The work car park is full of M5's M3's SLK's and S4, S5 Audis. The ancient E31 still manages to turn heads
sardonumsei 03-10-2009, 04:31 PM I am 40 (as of two weeks ago). I have a Ph.D. in acoustics and design acoustic test chambers. I have had my 8 for two years now and have loved it until recently. It seems that everything that can go wrong has gone wrong. Nothing out of the ordinary just one thing right after the other. It seems that I finish one project and drive the car a week and something else goes wrong. Right now its the radiator. I am just having issues balancing time to work on the car and life. Anyone want a really nice 840? :) To add to the pain, my daily driver was an e32 but it was ruined in a fire while staying at a friend's shop.
Update: The radiator is fixed and all new hoses are installed. All it took was another drive in the 8 to put a smile back on my face.

Neuance 03-10-2009, 05:23 PM Andrew from Edmonton Alberta Canada, 29, non destructive testing and structural inpections. Had the car for 2 years and spent lot's on repairs but all worth it for a gem like these cars, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and if I be holding her she be a beauty.
SupremeBein 03-10-2009, 05:47 PM 42 (I feel old after this post). I am the Engineering Manager of a tool & die shop just 7 miles from my home http://www.chesterfieldtool.com & http://www.tristatehone.com, I design special machines using SolidWorks, I bought my 8 3 years ago off of eBay, I feel in love with the color plus it had most all the mods I wanted so I bought it and had it shipped from California to Indiana. I wanted one sense I first seen one in 1992 on the show room floor. I have continued to mod it and fix it up. My other hobbies are computers (MAC's, was a Windows guy for 24 years but they finally pissed me off so I switched to MAC and have never been happier), collecting marbles, music and movies. My 8 is a fair weather car, my daily driver is a '99 Chrysler Sebring LXi, I also have (waiting to be restored someday) 2 '65 Buick Skylark Gran Sports (1 with a '70 455 Stage 1 motor the other with a 425 Nailhead and 2 4 barrel factory set up), a '40 Ford Standard Coupe with the racing flathead motor with 3 Stromberg carbs, and a '59 Dodge Cab Over Semi with a Hemi in it that I would like to put a rollback bed on and make it a car carrier.

nukeduster 03-10-2009, 08:40 PM 24, corrections officer... had it about 2 weeks now
expensive to get up to snuff esp. compared to all my other bmws but this is truly my favorite. then again that could just be the 19" wheels, the brake kit, the exhaust, the performance chip and differential, rebuilt tranny with shift kit talking. oh yea, did i mention the twinscrew supercharger kit? fuck this is dangerous to my creditcard. amex loves me.

crazy8 03-10-2009, 11:35 PM I'm 18 (I know a little young to have an 8) and I'm a musician and also act in commercials. I'm about to finish up high school. Have always loved the e31, and despite my knowledge of the 8's "ways," others advising me to get other more "zippy" bmws, and what I was getting my self into, I had to have one. Found a solid 840 in my favorite calypso red for a good price and the rest is history. One of the best decisions of my life!

lukianp 03-11-2009, 12:11 PM 25. from perth, western australia, and selling up to move to the UK! I do IT (networks /system admin / it manager type roles)
91 850 was the daily as my other pride and joy (07 lotus exige s with all the options) was getting too many kms and thus depreciating wayyyy too quickly. Also have a series 5 rx7 convertible 13b extend port trust t88 turbo dog box and 6 piston endless brakes, and a JZA70 Supra that if it was red, looks like a cutdown version of the 8, that has a forged 1.5jz motor with a trust t88 turbo and sequential box.
we certainly have people from all walks of life here! the people that bought our cars new, now they would be interesting to know

M.Rad. 03-11-2009, 12:50 PM 48-yo, I'm a Radiation Control Tech at varrious nuke plants around the country. Currently on assignment in Michigan (BRRRRRR!) Keeping Nuclear Power boring for you...
I've been working on my own machines since my teens starting with dirt -bikes, moving to American muscle cars, and now Bimmers. Worked as a machinist in my earlier days, and have re-built seven V-8s, one V-12 (last year-still not installed:embarrasm), as well as many 2 and 4-stroke motorcycle engines. I passed the ASE exams for Engine re-building, Brakes, and Fron-end & Suspension, but never worked in a shop to get the "patch".
I love my 8, it has one of the most beautifull bodies ever designed. It's slower off the bottom end than I'd like, but I'm working on that. I'd like to keep it for ever, just hope I can find the more esoteric parts for it, in the future. Guess I have to start building a stockpile of modules and such.
Regards,
M.R.

ed1655 03-12-2009, 07:47 AM OH! just thought of something. spoeaking of profiling... last Sunday I was sittng out eating lunch when across the street, up pulls a pristene 840. silver. stock. complelety unmolested, down to the oem wheels. my wife and i eagerly awaited to see who got out.... turns out this guy must have been at least 80! could barely walk, but there he was, driving his 8 to the paint store. second, i should mention that there's a black 850ci in my garage, similarly stock, down to the throwing stars, that belongs to a guy in his late 50's. the silver 840 seemed to be in great shape. the guy in my garage, however, doesn't take care of his black 850. paint is shit, it's always filthy, etc...

icheeban17 03-12-2009, 05:40 PM Just turned a young 44 as of January. Lost in space. Still dont know what I do for a living. Just know I provide for the wife and 2 kids. Actually 20 years in the restaurant business but out of that for know looking for new projects to launch as of now. My 2 favorite cars are the BMW 850 and the Porsche 935 DP. I settled on the 850 due to the 935 was more than twice the price. I broke all the rules of purchase on my 8 as in I purchased site unseen from a no winning bid on evil bay. I called the guy up and bought it over the phone. I know I know. No regrets I go ALL IN on everything in life. I have replaced all or most of the engine components which I knew going into an 8 venture.. I researched these cars for 3 years and surfed this forum to find out. Still need the 935DP one day only a handfull out and about these days. My car is A 1990 G-Spec Mauritus Blue with Gray and black interior 63K on the clock. I have had the Beast for about 2 years but just did most of the work last year. I have only put 1500 miles on so far. As said in eariler post these cars still twist heads. Had A guy in an M3 almost crash as his head wipped around to admire the 850. As Texas Great White would say Cool aint cheap and exclusivity has its price. I love the car you see hundreds of 3 series in Miami on any given day but never an 8. I need to post some pics of the Blue Beast. I suffer from the cousin of OCD which is ABD Attention Boredom Disorder. I have no patience for cut paste save file move send etc. I guess I will try again this week. Keep on loving your EIGHTS Bitches and Boys.:redspot:buttrock

:) Think your my US-twin with two exeptions:
1st your not my twin but my elder brother :D - but only two years...

Working as a gastronomist too. Having two children...
I´m like an 8!!! :redspot
Like to be elegant, but I´m not a Bentley!
Have many skills, but I´m no worldchampion in one section.
Have sportscar ambitions, but I´m not a Porsche.
Can pull heavy loads, but I´m not a Range Rover/Arnie :stickoutt
I´m not a male diva, but I pick out my favourites.
Catchword: Character! That´s an 8-talent, and it should be an 8-owners attribute too!
Cheers! :drink1

whale 03-12-2009, 09:17 PM I'm a 73 year old retired Navy carrier based attack pilot & Vietnam Vet. Bought my 96 840 a year ago through the internet after much email and phone correspondence. Flew to New York to verify everything the young owner said was fact. Fortunate for me, he had already spent and showed me receipts for $26K in maintenance and added improvements to a pristine example with only 64K miles (see signature specifics). The 2100 mile drive back to Salt Lake City was a joy in this magnificent machine. This cruiser was meant to eat up the freeways. Had to let it out driving through straight and barren Nebraska. So far the only failure has been the notorius radiator neck. The power of the Dinan software M62 V8 more than meets my speed requirements. Love this car and it draws the same amount of attention that my 63 MBZ cabriolet did!

Being a 1963, it is an injected 6 cylinder 220SEb. As a result of the heavy convertible body, acceleration is not impressive. A more favorable HP option is a later model 280 with the V8. Coupes are more readily available at almost half the price of a cabriolet. Your California area should have some nice rust free choices. These models, lacking computers, are easy to work on and well parts supported by the Classic division of Mercedes. If you are not a purist, buy a rust free junker and install an American V8 & tanny.

Smokum,
My 2003 W8 station wagon has turned out to be the best all around car that I have ever purchased new. With its 280hp, oversize brakes, lower stance, wider tires as compared to a standard Passat and combined with the All wheel drive, it is a sweet handling car. I haven’t modified it other than adding wood appliqué to the interior. The new top of the line VW CC doesn’t match the horsepower and handling.

How's it going guys. I live in Fayetteville, Georgia and currently go to Sandy Creek High School. After graduating, I plan to join the U.S. Air Force, afterwhich I will go to school and major in Eviormental Engineering. Other than the half of my salary going toward the 8 series:D, most will be invested to buy forclosed homes and rent them out for some extra income. The bonus money will be collected over a period of time to start a business with my mom, including my sister when she's (considering that shes 4 now, I want to build something up for her to have apart of to a secure future financially) a little older. As of now, I run my own yard cleanup business, detail cars, and work your tire changer and balancing machine. Happy Motoring Everyone :buttrock

Stefon, You have a very good head on your shoulders. Best wishes to a successful life, I commend your goals. A refresh for us "old folks!". Hopefully things work out and you will become the owner of my cherished black 850. You qualify as a good home for it, and that's an important part of the sale to me. God forbid someone buys it and paints it funny colors! (inside joke)
Good Luck

LEFT OVER RICE 03-14-2009, 05:16 PM Stefon, You have a very good head on your shoulders.
Good Luck
Thank you for the motivating words. Over the past 3 years, I have come to realize that I only have a small amount of time to live life, and since its the only one I have, why not do everything to the best of your abilities? Other than trying to please God, I just want to give a little back to my parents and the rest of my family who have helped me along the way. I also commend you guys here, because theres alot alot of knowledge floating around the 8 series section, not just about the 8 series, but about life and experiances we come across. You guys continue to amaze me, and hopefully I can become as successful as most of you guys here on the forum.

smokum 03-14-2009, 08:08 PM i think i found what you guys were talking about???
smokum 03-14-2009, 08:11 PM Smokum,
My 2003 W8 station wagon has turned out to be the best all around car that I have ever purchased new.
I agree totally

Rich 1992 850i 03-15-2009, 08:09 PM Damn, I guess I'm up there in age. 46 years old and work in finance/accounting. I've had mine for 4 years and it's my summer car. I drive a 750iL during the winter, but it also has the M70 and lots of maintenance. The 7 is 19 years old and the 8 is 17 years old, so you can imagine my issues/headaches. Sometimes I think I'm getting too old for this. Plus I'm married with 4 young daughters, but I digress.

SilverThing 03-16-2009, 04:48 PM 54, CFO for small commercial bank - not having much fun these days, I'm afraid :(. (Man, most of the members here are making me feel really old). Have had my 8'er for almost 11 yrs - was love at first sight. Almost sold it about 5 yrs ago (thought I wanted an M3 'vert instead), but at last minute I got "cold feet", couldn't sleep and finally backed out of deal (fairly gracefully, I think) - just couldn't sell it. Still gets a lot of attention when I'm out and about w/ it (is it me or is it the car?), but don't get to drive it as much as I'd like, unfortunately (is not my DD). Keep telling my wife that I want to be buried in it, but she doesn't laugh when I say this (hmmmmmm...).
Every so often I think about what I might replace it with, but nothing really has hooked me like the 850 (especially when it's fire engine red).
BTW, I think this forum is great and many thanks to all who have provided info, insight, advice and some laughs regarding 8'er ownership. Helps keep me sane.

I would be afraid to for my position, especially working for a smaller commercial bank, but good luck with your position. Hopefully you can hold out in this spell of economic distress that we are having. On a brighter side, good thing you decided to keep the 8. They are breath taking cars. When I first saw my first 8 series, I was 14 and at a church members birthday party. Her brother had a silver one. Once I saw it, I knew that was one of the best cars to ever spin a wheel on the surface of earth. Then last year around September, I was driving my moms car on the highway. Suddenly, I decided to look in the rear view mirror and I saw a black one about to pass me...... AND FAST. I was doing 80 on the highway, so with him being in the fast lane and passing like that, I say he had to be doing 120. Thats when I fell in love with the 850's. Stay sane, and don't worry about the bank:buttrock
Good luck
