On my way to work the other day, early morning, cool temps (about 65 degrees) and I see a mid 90's Mercedes SL coming up on me. Now, I am already going 20 over the limit, so he is moving. We are on a 3 lane street (each way, divided) and lot of lights. We get to a red light, both first in line, but separated in the middle by a dump truck, so we can't see each other. I didn't know if he would go for it.
Light goes green, I leave about half throttle, but he punches it and jumps ahead by two or three lengths. I see now it is an SL500, top down. I get into the throttle, and pace him. No worries, I know the next light over the hill will be red anyway.
We get beside each other, adn I motion to the road ahead as in "Lets try that again" Light goes green and we hit it together. I get about a half a length ahead, but then he begins to pull ,and gets his rear bumper to my front bumper. This is through second gear. As I hit third and begin to gain back some ground, he shuts down. Not sure why, maybe he saw me start to gain and didn't want to lose.
Had we kept going, I think I could have made up the ground.
Oh well, I guess it is a loss, but he quit before the fun began.
The 5 liter SL's were 302 hp, and 339 tq if I remember correctly.
NIce cars.

Nice race. Who knows what the outcome would have been had the two of you kept going, but it sounded like fun!
Best,
Jim

u have a 540/6 or a manual AB540?

If u have a 540/6 u would have the obvious upper hand.

nice run btw... :)

E34 Auto.
Only change I have made is the rear diff. I pulled the stock 2.81 and put in a 3.15 LSD
The tranny is new, with the upgrade clutch packs, and the engine was replaced (Nikasil issue) about 30,000 KM ago.
I noticed a big difference with the rear gear change around town.
