I wonder if this Steering wheel will fit my 1992 850
The airbag is a dual stage unit.

It fits, You have to know how to wire it, That wheell was popular on RF in 2006, Should be some readings over there.

No need to be sorry.... 8eights is the master of the short cryptic answer and probably didn't notice you're from Norway.... :stickoutt RF is short for RoadFly (http://www.roadfly.com/) It's been around a long time and there is a vast amount of information about anything on the E31 that you can think of, including this wheel conversion.

This has been fitted to the older e31's before, so it can be done.

Where in Norway are you??
I'm in Stavanger

From my research on RF etc, 2 stage will not work. Steering will work fine but in the event of an accident, good luck!

You can make it work. I will be doing so for my car down the road when I get more time (ha!).

It requires some clever wiring, but IIRC, you just wire up the airbag to the SECOND stage only, which matches the signal for the single stage airabag release. I would reconfirm exactly the method before attempting it, for safety's sake!

I realize that this mod was done in a e38 and not a e31, but principle/theory is the same. Also check the link in thread to bimmerboard for more info. Good luck. Worth the effort.

HEY !!!!!

Are you saing I can put an e46 M3 steeringwheel in my 1990 850 and make the airbag work???

I'm not concerned about the mf buttons, but I Have that wheel in my M3 and I love it, It would be a dream to have it in my 850 too.

So can it be done??

I had a steerringwheel like the OP in mind, had one in an e36 once, but I think the grip is too thin and the wheel is just a tad to big, the e46 M3 wheel is the perfect wheel.

I would say yes, providing you have access to a decent machine shop. Attached pic is of the mandrel machined up to hold the steering wheel for the various machining steps required for mod. Notice the two steps on the mandrel to properly mount and center the steering wheel. Also note that when you spin a M steering wheel up on a lathe to use a low speed, wheel rim is not exactly centered on mounting hole. I believe most questions about this mod are covered on the thread mentioned here and over on bimmerboard, but if you have further ones let me know. Keep in mind that this was the method that I chose to do this mod.
Looking at doing this mod again for a M3 floppy paddle wheel and a X3 sport wheel onto pre '99 e38. Reason to try the X3 wheel and sort out MFL issues - heated and looks a bit better than the X5 version.

I have friends that can machine anything for me, so that is really no issue.

I will read through the thread you posted.

If I decide to go through with it I and have questions I will "hunt you down" :)
