Could be useful...
but from my experience, it can lie and can be VERY inaccurate.
It showed a "clean title" on a car but when I got there to check it out it was in TERRIBLE CONDITION. Nosepanel was bashed in, dents on most of the panels, and the interior was super dirty and smelled like it would've been in a flood.
Another car I checked out also showed a "clean title". I went to check it out with a mechanic friend of mine and it was bad news. The owner was a guy who makes scale models etc etc...
First thing we do...pop the hood.
The shocks held the hood up, but when we were moving the hood, it was so flimsy, obviously made by this guy.
Then we looked at the frame rails, and my mechanic was looking at it, telling me that it was poorly repaired and it's probably been in a huge accident (glossy paint on the frame rails).
Next was the test drive. We turn the car on and we notice a few dim lights. The CEL and airbag lights were barely lit (maybe the guy took the cluster out and pulled the bulbs away from the original position)...then while we were driving it we realized that it didn't shift into 2nd...wtf!!
so yeah, sometimes CARFAX doesn't really help.
Good luck finding a car.
