Pull up to a red light in far right lane. To my left, in the middle lane, I notice a hooked up 95ish Monte Carlo SS with racing numbers. I rev at him, trying to instigate him. Opposite lights go red. I go on green. Didn’t spin, just went quickly to see if the Carlo would bite. No luck….but WAIT!! What is this??? OUT OF THE FAR LEFT LANE…….an E46 Bimmer convertible trying to race me??????

I am on the phone with a friend from GA who is a big BMW fan like me and I tell him I am racing a dark gray BMW convertible. I am just playing tag along at this point cause I am on the phone and not trying to shift like race time. He slows up a little and I catch up…still on the phone trying to figure out what kind of a car it is….UH OH!!!!!!! FOUR TAILPIPES!!!! YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS….E46 M3 CONVERTIBLE!!!! (my excitement about this is getting pretty apparent eh??)

I tell my friend, “You will not believe what it is….E46 M3 convertible!!!…I gotta go…call you back in a few.”

Pull up to the first light we get. 3 lanes…far right ends quickly…I try to swing out right around a minivan in the middle lane so that we can go at it. WHATS THIS??? He swings out faster than I can think and does exactly what I was going to do. I swerve back left and take the fast lane.

Looking over at him I see him smile. Looks like some Italian rich kid. AHH SHIT!!! Its on! My first race with a BMW!!! LET ALONE THIS CAR?!?!!?!

I stage to 3,000rpm. Tires are still at dragstrip psi from a few days back. I am set. Opposing lights go yellow, then red. I count one, one thousand, two one thousand and go perfectly when the light turns green. (A little street racing tip for those who don’t know. Works on a good amount of lights.) I spin the PERFECT amount, which was very little, and I am off!! Not sure if he spun…my car makes way too much noise on the launch to hear anything else. 1st gear winds out…got a little bit of a lead. Hit 1-2 shift smooth….top of second, beginning of third he’s right with me. Hit 3rd he pulls a car length. Brakes at 90mph for me. Him a car length ahead. Not a bad showing for the Max.

I was soooooooo happy. Shit was fun. I knew I wouldn’t win but still fun.

For all the critics that think I am bullshitting I will explain something real fast so you don’t have any questions.

----My RT on the green was sick because I used the counting trick. So I left just slightly before he did.
----My 0-60 was 5.9 on 23lb rims. I know have 16lb rims, which should help quite a bit on my hole shot.
----His 0-60 is about 5.3-.4 from what I know with the convertible top UP. His top was down.
----Conclusion: With a sick RT and a good launch its definitely possible for me to be in the lead to a little over 60.

So back to the story. We pull up to another light.

Me-“Dude that’s my favorite car. I love it.”
Driver-“Thanks man.”
His passanger- “Adam???”
Me-“What the fuck?”

Light goes green with cars behind us. We drive off. Turns out it was one of my friends, with another kid I know and I have raced before in his ’01 GT convertible 5spd. Must be his Dad’s car. I will have to find out about it. I think it was 6spd judging by movement of car during shifts.

ALL I CAN SAY NOW IS an E46 M3 under WOT is one of the coolest sounds I have ever heard. When he passed me I definitely got the best chance I could have had to hear that thing from outside the car…fucking sweet.

How’d y’all like my first BMW KILL STORY?!?!?!

I almost forgot I raced a pre-99 Mustang GT which was real loud on the way home after this. Gauges on A-pillar....beat him by half a car to 100.

Just doesn't make a good story like the BMW...:D ;)

I don't want to raise the BS flag but did you actually "kill" him to necessitate this a "BMW kill story"? I'm confused... :dunno

0-60 in 5.3 or 5.4 for M3? Is that true?

Good job keeping up man. Yeah, I ran one of those the other night. Guy was laughing at my car and I had 4 people in it so I had way too much weight, but I decided to run him anyway. Let me just put it this way, I was floored in second approaching my redline, throttle down all the way, and he flew by me like I was not moving. Everyone in my car was like..."WTF was that?"

Nice run man. I used to do that with other cars in my old car too. I got a run with an E46 M3 also in my IS300. Boy, that M3 was fast. It just pulled away. The sound of the E46 M3 does sound nice in my opinion. It's so distinct and the engine is amazing.

Yeah, the 0-60 time is a bit slower than the coupe in the convertible. I am not sure if it's 5.3 exactly, but it's somewhere around there in the low 5s. I think it's actually a bit lower.

shouldn't it be in the high 4's

the coupe is 4.6
some say it's 4.7
and I've seen in some websites that is 4.5

Yeah, I think the vert is 0-60 in 4.8/4.9 with the 6 spd, and SMG is around 5.0/5.1...

thats with Silver behind the wheel maybe. i think it would be a very rare occurence for the verte to hit 4.8...most people prolly cant hit 4.8 in the coupe.

how much more does it weigh???

The coupe gets 4.5/4.6 in the rags....

no question that the coupe can hit that. question is about the verte hitting that. i trust silver if hes seen those times before but the best i have EVER seen is 5.3 for the verte. most people have it at 5.4.

I can't recall, rags = mags (magazines), exactly which rag, but I have seen 0-60 in 4.58 or some such # for a Coupe, and Motor Trend got the Vert 0-60 in 5.0 with the 6 spd.
