View Full Version : Engine, Transmission, Exhaust Mounts
FunkyJunk 02-08-2009, 05:17 PM I'm looking to get these replaced because I'm pretty sure they're practically non existent on my car anymore. I don't have the experience to do it so it would get done at a shop. What sort of cost would I be looking at to have this done?
rcrad6653 02-08-2009, 05:56 PM Parts in this case aren't that expensive Funky, around $150 total, and that's non dealer. Of course you know that dealer labor rates will be more than an Indie, and I can't see this being much more than a 4-6 hr. job.
UZ4PLAY 02-08-2009, 07:17 PM One thing to keep in mind. Since Auto Nation owns all Bmw dealers in the States & is not doing so hot in this economy(you don't want to dare to look at their stock), their shops have been charging premium to say the least to keep their Dealers afloat. Just be careful, first get an estimate(in writing),only authorize what you want done and if they find something make them get your permission before they do anything further.
Also Dealer will not install aftermarket parts so do your homework on pricing. That way if you have a reg. Mechanic lets say he won't let you get the parts, you will know how much he's marking them up.
53helofe 02-08-2009, 07:29 PM I am sure you can find a reputable mechanic in SD that can do this for you at much less than dealer prices. Order he mounts from either Charlie Spear at Gault email Charlie.Spear@GaultAuto.com or www.autohausaz.com if you get an independent mech to do the work you can bring your own parts. The transmission mounts are easy they should not charge more than 1/2 hour labor to do them, the exhaust mounts no more than hour but the motor mounts could take about 2-3 hours because it will take two people.

Don't know how it is on the left coast, but my BMW dealer is family owned (actually all three here are)

scottym 02-09-2009, 12:50 AM half hour maybe 1 hour if you want to do some cleaning down there. The motor mounts on my 1995 850Ci only required to slightly lift the engine using my floor jack with a piece of 2x4 against the oil pan. Removed the 4 nuts, removed old installed new mounts, lowered engine, tighten nuts, DONE!
Trans mounts same thing, loosen nuts, raise rear of trans slightly, remove old, install new, lower tighten, DONE!
If you have basic mechanical skills, tools, floor jack & good jackstands go for it. At least take a look. You may have to remove the plastic deflector from the bottom of the engine to see.
Bryson 02-09-2009, 04:51 PM You can give a ring to Marco Polo BMW, it's a [very] small independent shop in La Jolla that's very familiar with 8's and the v12s/v8s in general, there's a good chance that they'll let you buy your own parts if you prefer and won't gouge you on labor.
858 488 7800, ask for Marco

Don't forget to check your Diff mounts, They last pretty good but are Usually over looked.
Koizumi 02-09-2009, 05:51 PM Are there 2 trans mounts or 1? I'm gonna do the trans fluid change real soon. I didn't even realize that there's a diff mount, too. I'll have to do that one as well.
53helofe 02-09-2009, 08:33 PM there are 2 transmission mounts.

This is news. The last dealership grunt I knew was at a place owned by the Sonic chain. You're right, they're all in bad shape lately.
8eights 02-10-2009, 04:04 AM 53 is correct Koi, There's 2 of them, If you don't have any play or knock/clank during kickdown when coming to a stop, Your probably fine, Knowing you and how you take care of your car, I'd be interested in your old one's;-)
