requirement in Germany. It is against the law to run out of gasoline - sounds starnge, but is true. Every car has a 5 liter canister in the trunk area. Most are the red plastic kind, but of course BMW's can't be seen with such cheap shit floating around back there...
They are on ebay all the time, cheapest I have seen is $5, the most expensive $190 - depends on how badly you want one.

With gas stations littered all over the place, I wonder why there is need to carry all that fuel. I guess Germans just want to drive more and fuel up less.

You usually run out when stuck in traffic, that is what the reserve is for...

besides, 9l wont get you far :D

I got caught in a stop (stau) on the German autobahn, used about 20l of fuel on 20km, and had like 15l left when I got to a pump.

Actually unless you're in a big city there are not stations everywhere. There are towns that are scattered over the hillsides but stations only in those towns, non in between.

With exeption of the east-border areas(gas used to be much cheaper in Poland or Chech-Reuplik) you´ll find a gas-station every 10 or 15 miles.
Not on the "Autobahn" :) real feeways - but normal streets.
How much is one liter in the U.S. currently?

Harry as of today, petrol in my area is $1.58 a gallon (€1.23), which is how it's sold here. A US gallon equals 3.79 liters. We may have cheap gasoline, but you will always have the real freeway over us....

Okay, I´m living in 8-series-wonderland, but you guys in gas-wonderland!
Current price for gas about € 1,12/liter, that´s $ 1,44/liter and $ 5,45/gallon!
Last year in summertime I paid about € 1,60/liter!!!

We are at 1,7 euros yesterday, but when the exchage rate is normal we are closer to 2euros a liter.
at worst this summer we was over 2 euros a liter.

Today we are at 1,77usd/liter, but that is just because the usd is 10-15% higher than normal right now, the norm is over 2usd/liter. this summer we was pushing 3

So with an averag of 16l/100km the 850 is not cheap to run.
