View Full Version : Clone Dinan springs
smokum 02-03-2009, 02:12 AM I finally got around to talking to the guy that bought my conquest TSI that works at betts.
From what he says there is no problem copying the springs even if its just 1 spring he can get it done.
I know there is at least 3 people that were asking about the original dinan springs.
Are you guys still interested?
rcrad6653 02-03-2009, 02:56 AM Yes, but I don't want to get into a group buy thing, and would want more details. All four corners or pairs, etc.... If he's that well connected then he'll have access to the original Dinan specs of those springs and shouldn't need to copy yours I'd think. Keep it simple. The rears are all the same rate, and the fronts had two versions: one for camber plates ( 1/4" shorter) and one 'regular'. I never got the drop details but if it looks like Ryan's TT in FL it's exactly what I've always wanted. Since I posted about the Dinan springs I have since confirmed with Bilstein that they will revalve shocks and struts to original Dinan specs to go with those springs. That spec is slightly softer then the 'sport' spec they used to offer. That's available too, you just have to request and pay extra for it. You do NOT want to install these springs with stock Bilsteins. In talking to Dinan if the run of 13 sets was sanctioned by them they could be advertized as official Dinan (FWIW) with their blessing. I know what the cost was for the other deal, let's see where your guy is at.
smokum 02-03-2009, 03:21 AM From the conversation no group buy was ever mentioned and i just told him they were some rare springs.
Just like me hes a suspension tech there ,the factory has moved to fresno i think is what he said.
Also i had the camber plates on my car so if anything they are the short ones.
The other thing too is if we can get this done im not going to be pestering him to get the specs if it will be easyer to just give him the ones i have to copy other wise everyone will want a cut of the pie and no one will be happy :(
rcrad6653 02-03-2009, 03:55 AM I don't quite get where you're coming from on that last part.....there's no pie because any way you go they'll be expensive. Hard cost of the others was about $460 a set (4) but that was for a minimum of 13 sets, and the recommendation was to do the non-camberplate ones. Your deal will be of one type so somewhat proprietary. No big deal, just a little more drop and probably close to the MKs for anyone getting a set and not running plates. A set of Eibachs can be gotten for $350 or less all day, the MKs are $550 and Laszlo has that cornered. I won't even include H&R because the only worthwhile is their fronts. Personally I'd be happy to get just a set of rears. Good luck on this.
Bryson 02-03-2009, 03:59 PM If they come in under $400, I'm interested in a set, any more than that and I'd be more comfortable modifying my shock shafts with threaded sleeves and getting to choose my spring rates & height

Should be a number imprinted on the springs. That will cover the spec for them. The spring manufacture should have the spec for the spring on file. Just match the number on the spring to the spec in which they were produced. That's it. Alex you should not have to give them your springs for them to be copied. Betts I hope would have all that information since they made them for Dinan in the first place. Good luck.
Cheers,
Carter
Auraraptor 02-03-2009, 07:15 PM How does the front drop compare to the H&R springs? Which sub-typpe had binding issues?

Both questions are not easily answered. First, we are dealing with a readily available product in today's market vs a custom offering that has been out of production for some time. Dinan might say what their advertized drop was, a phone call would tell. H&R is a completely different design from the Dinan, Eibach, Hartge, MKM, RD Sports, or ACS. An incremental difference isn't much anyway from all of those offerings and could be affected by further modifying (cutting) all the above mentioned except the H&R. Second, as to the binding issue of some of their springs, info is sketchy at best. Dinan isn't going to be real forthcoming regarding negative issues, and it remains to be seen if that info could be gotten as to which had problems.

8eights 05-19-2009, 12:22 PM Smokum!
Any update or contact info with your inside connect? I have a set of G-Power front springs that i would love to duplicate, Any help would be highly appreciated.
Auraraptor 05-19-2009, 02:00 PM On further research, only the rear springs are worth looking into, given the fronts are just a mimic if H&R springs for all intents and purposes. (Proximal rate; milder varied drop...given binding concerns, just go with the known choice)
The rears also do NOT need cloning...just order a pair of standard race springs in the right specs. Should not be all that pricey...the springs are a basic standard coil....no fancy variable coils or progressiveness.
8eights 05-19-2009, 03:00 PM Are you referring to Dinan or G-Power?

a spring is a spring, I could not care less if DINAN is printed on the coils.
I was just under the car today taking preliminary measurements to fit race springs in the back because I had considered this [rear pair only] option dead. Buying a pair would save me lots of time and tweaking!
+1 for a pair of rears
smokum 05-20-2009, 04:18 PM Bryson :( your the only one that wants a pair...

How often do you actully have the trailer hooked up?
I was thinking that when you dont have it hooked up your 8 would ride kind of funky wouldnt it ?
Stiff springs in the rear and soft in the front?
i have a differnt solution that i have seen used and it seems to work out well. You dont need a compressor

Bryson 05-21-2009, 03:42 PM working as we speak on eibach fronts to match the dinan rears :)
smokum 05-25-2009, 03:01 AM Busy weekend so bryson the front dinans are not stiff enough or to stiff thats why your going with the eibachs?
Bryson 05-25-2009, 03:52 AM front dinans are not quite firm enough. I really like the CSi rates, and can handle something a bit more firm; the eibach/dinan F/R setup is ~15% stiffer than stock CSi and balanced similarly
8eights 05-25-2009, 04:15 AM I think you'll like Csi's and Bilsteins, Some Ed Spring pads might be a good invite to for the weight of the trailer, I have CSI rears and they're a top quality/stiff spring for this car.
Bryson 05-25-2009, 04:23 AM I might just have to make a visit to Ed's place.. I'll keep working on the dinans, i actually know of two sets for sale currently, but would prefer not to buy all four if I can find a way around it
and I really don't tow the trailer that often! :stickoutt it's only been hitched up 3-4 times, it just seems that I only take photos when the two are connected I guess :redspot
I'm leaning towards the dinans in the rear partially because I have staggered tires and an LSD awaiting installation :devillook
8eights 05-25-2009, 05:08 AM PM me a price, I may take the fronts off ya.

??? From my experince the Dinans are plenty stiff front and rear, If i may make a sugestion.....Lets get a set made front and rear and you can slap them on and try them out i think you will change your mind and if they dont workout im sure some one here wouldnt mind snaggin them off of you.I would like to see a set made not just 2 for all that trouble.
It would be cool.

I'll be running hartge fronts, so I don't have much need for the dinans. As it looks now, I think I'll just be buying a set that exist already and splitting them with 8eights, it works out for the both of us in the end
smokum 05-26-2009, 03:47 AM ok cool
