Just installed a Remus performance exhaust....pretty disappointed! The fitment was not so great, the right exhaust was warped, they stick pretty far and the sound was nothing to write home about. Granted I didn't want a loud exhaust but was certainly expecting a bit more grunt. I am sending them back and was considering a Supersprint. Any thoughts/recommendations?

MAGNAFLOW all the way baby.
I tried them with the center resonator deleted - too loud and too "ricer", alot of highway speed drone.
I put the center resonator back in and they are perfect - growl when you step into the throttle.

Wow, I'm surprised to hear this. I installed a set on my '91 and have been very happy with them. They went on very easily and sound great. They do stick out a little more then I would like, but I am getting used to it.

Is an x-pipe and a resonator the same thing?

No, not at all. It doesn't have any 'muffling' capabilities and besides, from information of other owners the benefits of them seem to be for the V8s.

:nono You better ask the real V12-x-pipe drivers :)

Comparing the sound of V12-exhausts with and without x-pipes the X brings an increase of nice rumbling.

I bought mine with the Remux mufflers already in place. The rest of the exhaust is stock, and for me the Remus almost seem to silence the output -- all I really get is engine noise.

I'd actually like a nice low exhaust growl from my V-12, but I also do like the look of the Remus. Did you do anything differently to your exhaust to get a more agressive note other than the Remus mufflers?

Certainly being a TT is a difference, but I don't have any of that deep rumble aside from what the engine produces at all. Nothing even close to the sound of my Dinan 7 series.

Chuck,

Sorry I should have been more clear. The Remus exhaust is installed on my daily driver '91 with no engine mods. The Dinan TT came with Dinan's exhaust sytem.

Gotcha, I should have noted that if I read your reply more closely. How is your sound compared to mine? Honestly I'm a little disappointed in the noise as well from the Remus cans, and I'm wondering why some of us are getting different results compared to others using what appears to be the same setup.

Is there something so different from the M70 versus the M73 that would produce such a difference in exhaust note?

I installed Remus, but wanted more sound and removed the resonator.

Have a sample of that? What is it like now?

^^^Why not remove the center resonator? You will get a much more rumbly, louder sound. If you end up not liking it, you can reinstall the resonator. I say, give it a shot. Eitherway, the V12 will never sound like a V8 (which we already both know).

Cheers

:alrightright said again, but you forgot to say, that the V12 sounds better than the V8! :lol

Thanks for the advice... I may just have to look into that. Now if I could only figure out what this guys means by a "full Remus exhaust". This thing is beastly sounding...

Sounds like straight pipes from the cats back to the Remus cans with no center resonator. That's what I did on my car (but with Magnaflow cans).

Greetings to the E31 forum members,

I am new to the E31 forum having recently adopted a 92 850i 6 spd. I've been watching the activity on this forum and am very pleased to see how active it appears to be.

I'd like to ask about the Magnaflow exhaust that some of you have installed on your cars. I have one muffler on my car that is starting to rust through (not noisy yet but definitely rusting) and won't pass the state safety inspecton. I'd like to replace with the Magnaflow solution and am wondering which style Magnaflow muffler seems to be the most effective. Also wondering about the tips. On TxGR8White's post in this thread it appears that he used original style tips. I'm wondering if these are original tips removed from the old mufflers or an aftermarket tip similar in style to the original.

Any assistance or advise that you can offer will be greatly appreciated, and I look forward to discussing these great vehicles with you.

Cheers,

James

Compression ratio -> pulse frequency
Humm I tend to think it is piston size more than anything even tho we have more pistons they are small like the imports.
While the 840 sounds like a musscle car hence the V8
I think if there was a long glasspack type of muffler then magnas they would sound deeper

I know its not our car but every muffler has a certian sound to it and i kind of dig this one .

No. Read about offcrank V8s, then post. BMWs use the offcrank causing the pulse heard as a low rumble, aka the V8 rumble. V12s are in a perfect harmonic and do not make this noise; instead sound comes from the frequency of the even pulses. Thus compression ratio has more to do with the sound.

You cannot compare V8 to V12 even if controlling for the the pistons sizes.

If i could i would make the M70 sound like 1 of these babys

Ok....that Ferrari is a flat crank V8 with an absurdly high compression ratio and redline.

...not a VERY LOW COMPRESSION V12. :shifty Comparing the two is like wondering why a scalpel cuts differently then a butcher knife.

question still remains since this is a touring car Loud, med loud or quiet?
