View Full Version : M3 motorwerks GTG and Mountain Drive: Third Installment
BimmerDawg 07-23-2003, 11:09 PM Who said something about a drive?
Seeing as driving through the mountains and exploring the handling, braking, and overall "badassness" of our cars seems to be such fun, we've decided to do it again! :suave
So come and join your favorite M3 Tuners, M3 motorwerks and other fellow Bimmerphiles for a "spirited jaunt" through the picturesque mountains of Northen Georgia!
We'll do the same as before, meeting at the JC Penney's parking lot at Perimeter Mall off of Ashford Dunwoody Road in northern ATL, only we'll start sooner this time: 12:00, high noon on Sunday, August 24th, with an on-the-dot departure time of 1:30...NOT A MINUTE LATER!
We will, of course, have more incredible products for you to sample, and *uh hum* buy, so be ready! :stickoutt
The same guidelines apply as the last drive...we are going through the mountains to enjoy our cars, the (hopefully) nice weather, the beautiful scenery, NOT to explore the limits of adhesion or test the crashworthiness of our models (trust me, it's good enough... ;) ).
So, come one, come all, and be prepared to have a wonderful time with other enthusiasts, and meet us super cool guys at M3 motorwerks (if ya haven't already :) ).
markb50k 07-23-2003, 11:16 PM pretty sure im down for this. :)
BimmerDawg 07-23-2003, 11:17 PM THE ROUTE
Meet at JC Penney's parking lot (apparantely it's closed down, so look for a gathering of BMW's) at Perimeter Mall off of Ashford Dunwoody Road, just north of I-285 at 12:00 noon. Head out at exactly 1:30 p.m. for the mountains!
Take 285 to Ga. 400 North. After approximately one hour, 400 ends into GA-60. Go left (north, I believe) towards Dahlonega. Continue on 60 north through Dahlonega, taking note of right turn just past McDonalds on left to continue on same road.
Continue on 60 until you come to a "rock formation" that splits the road. Veer left to continue on 60. Careful here b/c you are turning left across traffic around a pretty bad turn.
Continue on 60 until you see a BP gas station on your right. Turn right onto Wolfpen Gap (GA-180) and try to stay on the road! :stickoutt
Wolfpen Gap dead-ends into Hwy. 129, turn left. Go approxiamtely two miles and turn right onto GA-180. Continue on 180 until it dead-ends into Ga. 17-75. Go right.
Continue on 17-75 over Unicoi Gap, taking the next right onto 75-spur a couple of miles before Helen. Go approximately four miles to right onto Ga. 348. (Richard B. Russell Hwy.)
348 will dead end into Ga. 180, go left. Continue on 180 for approximately one mile to dead end into Hwy. 129/Hwy.19. Go left. (South)
Take 129/19 south through Vogel State Park and over Blood Mountain. Make a right to continue on 19 south (towards Dahlonega, not Cleveland).
You'll come back to the "rock formation" in the middle of the road again. Veer right to get on GA-60. Continue on 60 past the previously mentioned BP for quite some time into Morganton. You then take a left and then a right in town to continue on 60, so take note of this.
Continue on 60 until it runs into Hwy. 76. Go left (south) and this road becomes Hwy. 515 and then I-575.
PREPARATION
Although we won't be racing through the mountains at warp speed, the mountains will take a toll on your car. Here's what you can do to make the experience a little less stressful for you and your car:
1. Tire pressure. Bring a gauge with you, and make sure before you head out that your tires are properly inflated. I recommend 35 psi, but more or less will be fine.
2. Check your oil before hand. Seems obvious, but you'd be suprised. I had a guy in a trip I led last year with my VW group that had low oil, and his light came on in the middle of nowhere. He had to drive with his oil light on for fifteen minutes or so, which I'm sure his car didn't like. Just common maintenance.
3. Brake Pads. Make sure you don't head up there with you pad sensor light on. You WILL do a number on your brakes, especially if you plan on being somewhat "frisky". Wofpen Gap itself could eat through half a set of pads. Seriously.
4. Bring a two-way radio. VERY important, especially if we get upwards of ten or so cars going. Split-ups are bound to happen, and two-ways will defnitely come in handy. Keep in mind that we will regroup at the BP in Helen halfway through the trip.
5. Anything else anyone can think of? Lemme know.
Please feel free to ask any questions here or PM me. I'm looking forward to meeting some of you guys and reacquainting myself with others.
P.S.--A lot of these road numbers are posted on memory...so, I take no responsibility for you getting lost! Just playing. ;)
P.S.S.--SHOW UP WITH A FULL TANK OF GAS! We don't want to have to wait for everyone to fill up before we head out. :)

Fear the abuse that Barney is going to unleash on the Clown Shoe IF you show up at this meet. ;)

Did you ever replace the valve cover gaskets?
BimmerDawg 08-11-2003, 08:42 AM TTT
rwindleyme02 08-11-2003, 09:57 AM No, I checked the records and the valvle cover gaskets vere replaced in October. Turns out that if the covers aren't torqued down or the coils aren't fitted correctly, oil can seep in.
I did end up changing the plugs. Cleaned everything up really good and torqued everything down correctly. Took a while with the 2 sides... This didn't fix the idle problem but at least I have new plugs :) My next job is to take apart the intake & throttle body and clean & check everything for leaks (ICV, intake seals, vaccuum hoses, etc...) If that doesn't work I'll replace the ICV. If that doesn't work, I'll replace the O2 sensors altough the Bentley's says the 540 doesn't need them replaced untill 100K mi. I'll probably start on that sometime this week or next...
rwindleyme02 08-11-2003, 09:59 AM What is TTT?

The "... 'n shit" = other cars that are not M3s.
Not implying these cars are shit, but rather there will be M3s, as well as other cars. I just chose not to enumerate everything that would be there.
I guess I could've just as easily said, "... and other assorted cars," but " ... 'n shit" sounded much cooler in my head, so I went with it.
