View Full Version : NHTSA DECLARES HIDs Illegal - BLOW OUT SALE/EVERYTHING MUST GO
umnitza 07-22-2003, 01:57 PM PRICING
$400 for 4500K
$480 for 5500K
$520 for 5100K
$550 for 6000K
These prices are SHIPPED. And the LAST DAY TO PURCHASE is 8/12.
IMPORTANT:
A little bit of background. NHSTA/DOT has been trying to introduce new laws to regulate the sale of HID... well.. they just decided to BAN ALL HID KITS. They do not have a set regulation because HID does not use a filament.. therefore, no matter how accurate the HID kit is, it fails because of that ONE requirement. Well, DUH, HID has no filament, so it automatically fails.
After 8/15/2003, HID kits as you know it will never be sold again unless new laws are made. I'm sure there are all types of legal issues here, for one, this has all been done without anyone knowing. After 8/15/03, there will be a $5,000 fine PER DAY for vendors selling HID kits.
Therefore, I need to move out ALL my inventory.
All HID kits are now on sale on our website. Parts will still be available and warranties will still be honored after the above date. After 8/15, only parts sold for warranty purposes will be allowed.
You will begin seeing a LOT of HID vendors out there selling kits to move inventory, but we still stress the importance of going with Umnitza/Catz. I am not sure of the future of Umnitza in HID, but Catz will always be there for your warranty and replacement needs.
Video:
HID VIDEO (http://www.umnitza.com/HID/hidpromo1.wmv)
Rising White bulb: 3200 lumens, 202,000 candle power, 2000 hour life expectancy ( halogen is 400 hours )
Bulb info: All are D2S type, 35 watt
Igniter info: OEM equipment for HID in Japan, output voltage to bulb; 18-27kv
Ballast info: OEM equipment for HID in Japan, output voltage; 85volt, 35 watt
All ballast's have Safety Auto Shut-off feature.
HID bulbs place capsule in exact placement of halogen filament even on Hi/Lo kits.
Other Details:
Molded Base - not "hot glued" - but actually MOLDED where the bulb is placed into the mold and the plastic is poured in.
Matsushita Ballast and Igniter - Panasonic's parent company.
GE Bulb - I'm guessing here but they "bring good things to life":D
PnP Install - it took me 5 minutes per side to install them - this is NOT an exaggeration.
Separate Ballast and Igniter Kit Wetzler approved of this setup (for more information view www.geocities.com/kitwetzler). His comment to me was: you won't get the potential for arcing because the ballast is removed from the igniter.
ISO9001 and ISO140001 Certified - not much to say here.
Retails for same price as Philips - and doesn't really go down - it's because of the sheer quantity that allows us to do it.

DSK M3/4 07-22-2003, 02:13 PM do you have a link to the NHTSA story?
umnitza 07-22-2003, 02:27 PM for now, private eyes only.
jayhudson 07-22-2003, 02:53 PM Bummer, Matt. Here's hopin' mine keep working 'til I sell the car.

umnitza 07-22-2003, 02:54 PM your warranty is still good. so don't worry about it.
m3howie 07-22-2003, 03:27 PM Aw man, what timing, I bought mine at full price!!:(
thurst0509 07-22-2003, 03:54 PM not related to this sale, but does this ban include the sale of factory HID lights? I see the word "kit" several times in your quote up there, but it doesn't seem to make sense banning the kits while factory HID's are still allowed.
could it be some legislation that car manufacturers are pushing for so they can edge the kit makers out and gain a monopoly on HID's? seems a bit suspicious... *puts on tinfoil hat*
finally, will you extend these sale prices to your kits (for example ZKW + DDE + HID)?
boostnM3 07-22-2003, 04:20 PM I just went to NHTSA website and also called the DOT hotline. By what i gathered, this story is complete BS. They are not banning HID kits. As the person explained to me, they would have to ban all HID kits including factory installed kits. He said thats impossible to do.
SO i guess we have nothing to worry about guys. After i thought about it more, seems to be a good scheme to sell more kits to free up inventory. Pretty good plot.
;)
outkastaliens 07-22-2003, 04:39 PM i think if this was a plan to free up inventory, i think that is complete bullshit. there is a code of ethics and this is over the limit. I am not accusing, but if this is not true, understanding vendors contribute a lot of money to the site, but this should be looked at very closly! Matt, i really hope what was quoted above is not true. It seems that it would have gone public already because there are a lot of vendors out there that they are not going to be able to contact them all. I am just crossing my fingers everything matt has said is true.
xvxax 07-22-2003, 04:45 PM Hm, lemme ask my dad. He's the press rep for NHTSA. I'll get back to you.

If you want to relieve people on this board from raising the B.S. flag I say post the link? WHo are you protecting from hiding the link? If its true then who cares? Are you afraid people will call the NHTSA and complain? Or is the link not off of the NHTSA website and the source of the information could be wrong or not 100% sure?
///MZG 07-22-2003, 06:09 PM this is really weird.
Iron Chef 07-22-2003, 06:13 PM 550 shipped for the 6000k? What's the original price?
umnitza 07-22-2003, 06:30 PM My source is a Steve M. from SEMA in Washington.
202-XXX, XXXX.
Until I hear more, I don't know what to say.
To claim this is a ploy is absolutely ridiculous because I have more to lose if this is true than you can imagine.
If it's a hoax, which is what I would WISH it to be, then I'm hoping that SEMA rep is going to call me back.
And, it's for ALL HID AFTER MARKET KITS, not kits that are sold by the manufacturer which already have DOT approval.
I certainly hope I'm wrong on this.!!!!
jmargo 07-22-2003, 06:56 PM I left my reply to all of this on the General thread.
I've got a GREAT Idea.....lets get the facts before we bash someone ! I know, I know its not as fun but its worth a try.

axcE36M3 07-22-2003, 07:01 PM i'll back matt up on this. i was contacted by catz as well about this matter. so all kits are on clearance now. no more after the 15th for me either.

thank you.
I really hope I'm the vendor that cried wolf too soon.
It's like this in terms of logic. Wwhen Prohibition was enforced, the price of booze went UP, not DOWN. Why would I want to offload my inventory???? I could "quitely" sell the kits privately to individuals like bootleggers. Unfortunatley, I'm too honest for my own good, and I have a family to worry about, so I'm not going to be doing anything illegal or that I could be fined for. I'm sorry, I don't do that
Madd96///M3 07-22-2003, 09:22 PM how would you describe the color of each kit? The kits come with everything you need right, ballists and install stuff etc, bulbs.....Im looking for white with a little blue from certain angles, but not bright blue or purple, which kit is for me?
magnetic1 07-23-2003, 02:10 AM If you guys still dont believe UMNITZA and AXC.... check out pages 3/4 of http://hidforum.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=596
This is truly a sad sad day.... this is for ALL Aftermarket HID kits...
To make a long story short.. there is currently no regulations on replacing halogen bulbs with HID. The only thing DOT goes by, is that when you replace a halogen bulb, it must have a filament in the same location as halogen. Well, gee... HID technology does not have a filament, so guess what, it fails.
To me and others I have talked to, this seems like a one man ploy to rid the market, and I believe it too... the gentleman's name with NHSTA that I have been informed of is Michael Cole.. he is local to the Washington DC area... He has posted on local autocrossing lists vehemently bashing HID kits and it is my belief that he hates them and has made this his personal vendetta or something....
I was told by Catz that then they did testing, they ised a Catz 9006 in a 9004 housing... of course nothing is going to be right... ARGH. In addition, they tested CRAP 9000+K kits in 9004 housings from vendors like hidkits.com etc...

Sorry, I'm late to the thread on this one. As you can imagine, have been fielding non stop for ours.
4500K - white/halogen
5100K - bluish/white
5500K - bluish/bluish
6000K - purplish/white
If you want best of both worlds, it's 5100K, if you want best output, it's 4500K:)

Z Me FLy 07-23-2003, 10:45 AM I am new, I am wondering if these kits will work on my 1999 Z3 Coupe? Also how hard would it to be to install them? Thanks
umnitza 07-23-2003, 10:47 AM they will work, and they aren't that hard, I have a video.
Fissionx 07-23-2003, 11:02 AM so does this mean u can buy, from the dealer, hid kit from an s2000 or bmw after aug 15th?
umnitza 07-23-2003, 11:07 AM no, dealer products will be unaffected.
resellers and vendors are in the aftermarket are.
Fissionx 07-23-2003, 11:14 AM welp, i guess its now or never. 6000k here i come :)

magnetic1 07-23-2003, 08:10 PM More on the issue:
However, the agency's Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance (OVSC) has
recently initiated several investigations with potential manufacturers,
distributors, and retailers of HID conversion light sources and kits.
OVSC asked several questions relative to the compliance of that
equipment with the Federal safety standards and informed those parties of
their responsibilities under Federal law. Manufacturer responses to OVSC's
inquiries are due no later than August 15, 2003. Although the agency
does list information relative to its investigations on the web at
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/testing/comply/monthly/, it typically
requires some time before the web page is updated.
If you require additional information relative to these inquiries,
please feel free to contact me directly at 202-XXX-XXXX.

TurboM3 07-23-2003, 11:51 PM this just makes it illegal to sell right?
What if i put it on my car would that make it illegal?
Thanks
MArk
umnitza 07-24-2003, 12:10 AM to sell only.
Andy W 07-24-2003, 03:26 AM got anything in say, an H1 bulb?
Reck1ess 07-24-2003, 04:37 AM damn... saving my money for the kit right now
GQ_Style 07-24-2003, 02:38 PM How plug and play is this? Example, for your 9006 kit. Does your ballast take power from the headlight plug? Do you have pictures of the ballast connectors and all the parts? Thx.
umnitza 07-24-2003, 03:00 PM they plug into the existing power from the lamp to the lamp.
That power is suplied to the ballast/ignitor.
I've not personally installed them on a 900X application, but have had numerous customers do so with little issue.
318allshow 07-24-2003, 03:09 PM i have the ellipsoids with plug and play wiring. how would i wire these h1 bulbs if i have 9006 wiring
umnitza 07-24-2003, 03:47 PM If you have PnPs, you are set. There is nothing else for you to do.
The bulbs get their power from a yellow wire that attaches directly to them. You undo this power and connect it to the power from the HID bulb. It's literally plug and play.
magnetic1 07-24-2003, 06:40 PM Everyone has the right to be skeptical.... and I would be too... but the way I see it, its a good deal for HID regardless....
Some more information posted regarding this:

332 RustBucket 07-25-2003, 01:04 AM I signed the pet. :) , number 334 or something along those lines :)
PBalla 07-25-2003, 01:50 AM I'm confused unmitza, you told me these fit on my e30, but how come the e30 isn't listed on the left bar on your site for HIDs...I see e36 and e46 3 series, but no e30
:dunno
umnitza 07-25-2003, 01:55 AM you are right.
Your car is either 9006 or H1 depending on whether you have Euros or stock US.
magnetic1 07-25-2003, 09:26 AM actually for the couple of years the E30 had those sealed beams... the kit wont work
PBalla 07-25-2003, 05:28 PM fuck
magnetic1 07-25-2003, 05:29 PM Phar, an option would be to buy the ellipsoids from
http://www.liteswap.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=HellaE30&Category_Code=projectors
... then get a HID kit for that.....
Z Me FLy 07-26-2003, 03:00 AM Sorry if I missed this, but how do we pay for the HIDs? Also I haven't done anything like this before do you think I would be able to do it? How long do you think it would take? I am taking about installation wise. Thanks....
Franchise 07-26-2003, 03:15 AM oooh i guess i will have to stop by now umnitza.
looks like the money i was saving to get my bodykit painted and installed just went towards headlights and tires :)
umnitza 07-28-2003, 12:29 AM It wont' take long. If you are in Oakland, I would work with you as necessary:)
You pay by going to Umnitza.com under Lighting.
jmargo 07-28-2003, 11:57 AM Do you have an actual storefront ?
Will Hids go into the stock (Plastic) housings ?
umnitza 07-28-2003, 12:01 PM HIDS can go into the 900X connectors.
It's not recommended, but you can drop by and look at the inventory.
Email me, we can setup a time that works for you.
///MZG 07-29-2003, 06:20 PM I just signed, #1500!
umnitza 07-29-2003, 07:10 PM FYI, I think we're out:(
StickBoy 07-29-2003, 09:22 PM Aww man are you serious, no more kits left. Damn always come in on these things too late.
umnitza 07-29-2003, 09:38 PM we have 5100 and 6000K
John540i 07-30-2003, 09:45 AM We do not sell the "add to kits" but there seems to be a big deal about this. Have you heard any news yet? This will be a big change in the industry and hurt a bunch of people. Hope it works out for you and this turns out for your best.
Good Luck

StickBoy 07-30-2003, 01:26 PM Aww man I was looking more for a 4500k kit. Thanks anyways.
