if fios was available in somerville we would have it (if that means anything to you). until that time we're using comcast.

RCN isn't available there, only COX or FIOS. If FIOS wasn't so badass I'm pretty sure Eric would be leaning toward COX...for obvious reasons.

i was leaning towards fios but i didnt like certain things

the channels for a 2nd tv are minimal you have to get another box and pay a fee

if you are in an area that loses power frequently, it's not good the phone only stays active for a few hours

and they remove the copper from the house so if you want to go back to cable it's a bitch

Cox is great as a cable company, had them for 1.5 years, but I've heard even better things about FIOS. Just be glad that you don't have to settle for Comcast. :shifty

I have Comcast, they suck. I'm so excited to actually have an option now. It's already set up for FIOS so no worry about them having to run wires and crap.

Agreed - comcast blows. Had them in Jersey, was not a fan.

Looks like COX wants to rape you with installation fees, where as if you are wired for FIOS...they install for free? Any experience there?

i was lucky, i've never had to have anything installed. when i moved within the state, i just brought my boxes over, hooked them up myself, called them up to activate them, and that was that.

The FIOS UPS will keep the phone working for quite a while if the power fails. The Internet access and TV dies immediately.

You can always plug the FIOS UPS into another larger UPS to get a longer uptime.

Yea, don't need the phone service. Looks like we can get cable, all the hd, dvr and hbo for about $115 a month. Seems pretty good to me..

service is irrelevant to mcblur's decision if you're down in VA. when i moved (within RI), Cox's service could not have possibly been better in getting my services set up without sending me a bottle of Captain.

yeah, that's about what i'm paying for that.

FIOS was awesome, had it when I was living in NoVa. Where I live now it's not available, supposed Deval Patrick says that high speed net will be available state wide before he leaves office.

I have had Direct TV, Comcast, and now FIOS...

Off the bat, picture is outrageously better on FIOS, the picture signal is generated IN your home instead of carried over the copper. Both HD and NON HD channels benefit from this.

Second there is no copper eliminated from the house. It is Simply disconnected. Fios re uses all existing home wiring as long as it is Data grade copper.

Third 15MB/s for $50 a month... SAAAWWWEEEEEEEEEET

I'm bumping this thread because it appears you must be INSANE if you choose COX over FIOS.

After doing the research, we ended up going with the following:
With FIOS:
Internet, cable, HD for 2 TV's, HD DVR, and HBO. Totals comes out to around 100 bucks for the first 6 months, and 115 or so for the following months. This includes a boat load of HD channels and sports channels. And a set up fee of around 30 bucks or so. Fios is giving us free DVR for the first 6, free HD box for the 2nd tv for 12 months, and free cable for the first month.

Cox
For all of the same, about 160 bucks a month, not to mention the ~$215 activation and set up fees! :eyecrazy No promotions.

And if FIOS is as good as everyone claims, how is this even a decision?!

FIOS is definitely the way to go. I had Comcast for a while then switched to FIOS when I moved into my current apartment a little less than two years ago. FIOS internet is slightly cheaper than comcast internet and you get a much better upload rate. Additionaly, verizon does not cap your bandwith the way comcast now does. HDTV w/dvr is comparable in price for basic packages, you would have to check the channel lineup to make sure what you want is included. I can't say for sure if FIOS has more, but I am definitely happy with their lineup. FIOS also lets you add things like HBO individually, rather than paying for a package. This makes adding premium channesl cheaper.

I have actually been very heavily considering moving to a new town/city just for the simple fact that Fios is not available in Quincy and won't be for some time. Ahhh, to be free of Comcast...that would be the life.

Haven't had to, yet. Installation went very well - still waiting on the first bill, but I think service has been okay thus far.
