Okay, I am thinking about heading to the test and tune at Cecil County Dragway on Saturday with my car. For those of you that know what I have been working on for a while now, you may be able to put 2+2 together...

:devillook :devillook :devillook

The strip is just a few miles off of I-95 about 12 miles short of the border between MD and DE, so about 45 minutes or so north of Baltimore.

Anyone, Anyone... Bueller?

Well Steve, someone has to be there to record it for posterity (and, perhaps, your website)!

What time are you planning to be there?

I think the gates open at 8AM, although they don't usually open the track until about 900 or so. I will probably get there early, by like 830 or so.

Have to unload my mobile auto shop from the trunk for those "just in case" instances so i don't weigh myself down!!

It is $35 for the day, but usually on a test n tune, you can get LOTS of runs in... Track closes at 4PM

Steve -

Gotta drop daughter off at Wash, DC Union Station for 7:30AM train, but *might* be able to head off to drag strip from there. Let's plan to talk Friday.

Aww, I just got back from the outer banks! Would've loved to come and watch...

Could you give us a summary?

Man, I couldn't find it. :(

Was it off exit 85...Rt. 22?? I asked around and no one seemed to know where it was. One guy told me it might be across the bridge. :dunno

Since I had no idea where it was I just went to the golf course.

If we wait until next sat we can settle the feud me and andy have had between our cars. He thinks his ricer POS honda with altezzas can beat my clean and tasteful 240sx. So Andy, you going to be a man and accept the challenge???????????

I went, Neil showed up, along with a few others, but I was the only Bimmer to run. Bunch of wimps!!!

Andy, the track is located off of exit 100, which is over the bridge!! Sorry you didn't find it!

Here is a brief summary:

Car - 1993 325is, with 99,050 miles on it. Running nearly bald Sumitomo 245/40-17 on rear with 20 psi. Car is "slightly" modified with my prototype twin-screw supercharger setup on it, running at a low "test" boost level of about 6 psi.

Did 12 total runs before my clutch started to give up the ghost. Not bad for an original clutch with 99,000 miles on it!!!

Temp F - 98 on time slip (My datalogger was reading higher than this, up to 116 in the brake duct)
Barometer - 29.26 No Humidity given.

This was the 5th run of 8 that were as back to back as I could get, with intercooler water temps soaked to 130+ degrees due to lack of airflow from sitting in the staging lanes. I think this is probably about as close to worst case as that can get, since in any other conditions you would be moving! We will see what happens on a road course soon enough...

R/T - .830 (running by myself, so took my time!!!)
60' - 2.166 (came out at about 4100rpm, a tiny bit of wheel slip, and some clutch slip due to heat and repeated runs)
330' - 6.009
1/8 - 9.162
MPH - 78.31
1000' - 11.831
1/4 - 14.090
MPH - 99.90

Did a few runs after, but the clutch started to give out due to the quick time diff between runs. However with 3 runs spaced 3-4 minutes apart, I saw NO performance degradation HP wise, with 99.90, 98.50 (missed 2-3 shift and hit 5th), and 99.32 mph.

Max boost seen in datalogs - 5.9psi

Max EGT about 1280F

Not too bad, but I wanted that 13.XX and the 1XX MPH so bad I could taste it!!!

This is still with a "low" boost setting of <6 psi, and with nearly NO tuning. Stay tuned...

For reference, best result I can recall with car in NA form was
15.377 @ 91.6 mph, with a 2.15 60' time, in cooler weather...

Steve, very cold EGT values. .Congrats. Actually, I forget whether you get into 4th gear in a quarter, but if you do, its not for very much time. So since its mostl first, second, and third, thats one reason the egts are cold. Pushing to redline int second or third doesnt get me hotter than 1100 to 1200 either. Its those long fourth gear pulls and of course, fifth, which youve got to be careful of :) Nice times for a 325 and 99k mile clutch too. Especially with those hot track temps. Id love to know what your IAT values were registering :) Too bad you werent closer. Id have loved to be there :D Good luck, now that youre got your pride and joy in the home stretch.

Hi steve, very nice times for such a hot weather. Im sure with better tires(Nittos), better clutch, cooler weather(70's), and 8psi with tunning u should be running mid to low 13's at 104-106. I was amazed to see a whipple charger on a BMW. Never thought of it though. Nice job. I installed a good clutch only and gained 2mph with no other changes. So get ur self a good clutch and run it again. Good luck. :)

Paul,

My Max EGT was seen at the top of 3rd gear. I got into 4th, and went thru the traps at around 5500 rpm. IAT at the beginning of the run (sitting at the line idling) was 154F, at the END of the run, it was 157F. That is due to the water in the IC being at around 130-135F from sitting in the staging lanes waiting to run. Air OUT of the compressor at that point was about 195-198 F. My OUTSIDE air temp sensor, in the right brake duct (my sensor, not the BMW onboard one), was reading 128F at the beginning of the run, and 111F at the end. I think I for people that want to drag race, a fan added to the IC heat exchanger, or adding a switch to the AC fan would be good.

The thing that I feel good about is that the temps, and the trap speeds were consistent over 8 runs back to back. I felt like I was on a circle track at the end there! 3-4 minutes between runs was certainly not enough for my clutch though!!

On the street, up to 95F ambient, I have not seen my IAT higher than about 128F. That is because when moving, the water temp in the IC will stay below 105F at least to this point!

Thanks for your support guys, there is more to come!!!

sweet, sweet.

you have to mail me soon steve, talk about the tuning data acq etc.... especially the heat exhanger and how the calcs played out in the real world....

time to start reeling in everyhting out there:devillook

FYI, did a pull this morning, just thru 2nd and 3rd gear. Ambient about 76F.

IAT at top of 3rd gear under 6 psi boost:

Ambient = 73.5
Water in = 83.1 (entering IC charge core)
Water out = 88.6 (Leaving IC charge core)
Air in = 129.52 (At compressor outlet)
Air out = 99.89 (in intake manifold)

Boost = 6

Afr = 10.57
Egt = 1297.7 (approx 3" from exhaust port on cyl #3)

The compressor outlet temp was climbing slowly, but I think the compressor efficiency numbers on the maps UNDERESTIMATE the efficiency of the Lysholm compressor....

Won't know for sure until I can hit the dyno and get some LONG 4th gear pulls...

BTW Paul, Note that my EGT's are with the probe within a few inches of the exhaust port.

I wish I could have been there to see your car. I've been reading the threads on your project. I never noticed you were so close.

Any plans for a kit for the E46?

Yes, there are plans for E46 kits. However realistically it will be a while, as I have to get "to market" with the E36 OBDI, develop the tweaks and tuning for the OBDII E36, and THEN hit the E46...
