I would go and steam it clean and dry first to be sure that's the only leak, Is it leaking from the speedo sensor as well? It will be a o-ring there if so, If that's the only leak, You should be able to pull the half shaft and change it, I use a sealant along with the gasket, Works for me. Manual or Auto? Diff stock? If not, Upgrade for the new year, I'm seeing 210mm 3:15 LSD's for $175 to $350, You'll love it!~
Sorry, Yes! You can fix it without bringing it out, I get excited about lsd and gear upgrades, Too much fun to be had there!
Happy NY!

thanks it is a 4.4L 840ci with 5 speed steptronic gearbox I do fancy a new diff what other diff fits this car ie model etc there is a BMW Scrap yard about 16 miles away met try them but in the mean time will reseal this one

When you say pull the half shaft and change it, do you mean at the wheel hubs never done one before but I should have all the parts I got Gerry Speechley to post me every thing I needed here is the list
2 seal rings
2 shaft seals
1 bush
a tube loctite
1 dust cover
1 o ring
1 lock plate
1 shaft seal
2 o rings
2 dampers
2 circlips
1 set powerflex bushes
am I right in saying you take the back plate off to pull the clips to get at the seals and pull the drive shafts out from the hubs do I need any special tools or puller and where is the filler hole in these diffs

Happy New Year

This will help: (well, there was a url here. Go to bmwtechinfo dot com slash repair slash main, or google on bmwtis factory info or check alternate boards for numerous links)

All you do to change the side seals is unbolt the half shafts at the diff and pop the drive flanges off with a big prybar, then change the seals. Don't undo the 8 bolts on the sides. There's a big retaining ring in there but it just rides in grooves, not like a compressed circlip. Replacement is recommended by book but not usually merited. Use a little Loctite on the rear cover bolts after replacing gasket, they work loose. Easy job, good luck. FWIW
