View Full Version : Multifunction Steering wheel Mounting

Here are images comparing the Multifunction and the standard steering wheels from the back. This is where the slip ring would mount. Notice two things:

1. The (lack of) the triple screw mount on the multifunction wheel.
2. The different positions of the centering "nub." On standard wheel it is an indentation, proximal to the hole for the wires to come out, while the other (multi) has a little protrusion, distal to the hole for the wire exit.

As such, the OE slip ring will not work with the multifunction steering wheel.

I would love thoughts on adapting the wheel as to have it mount in the car!

Bump for eights. He had it mounted without any modification to the wheel itself (most impressively so I might add)

Well I poked the slip ring a bit today. No way I could see it easily (or safely) being modified to adapt to the multi-wheel. 8eights, care to chime in?

Why when people deal with you, You try and blast them in front of everyone? When your the one who purchase things and then ask questions far afterwards? You wanted to buy it and you got it, No one owes you nothing! Promised you nothing but a perfect wheel!! You got what you asked for cheaper than what you were willing to pay, You want it installed, Buy the parts to insall it. If you want help then go about i the right way.

Wowwww. Hold on there.

First, I am not trying to 'blast' you in any way! Quite the contrary, I both respect and admire that you were able to adapt the wheel and have it work! (In fact i said that in the second post! And when I saw you posted in this thread I eagerly awaited to read your post since I know you know your stuff) Seriously, your one of the members I am most repeatedly awed by your array of E31 aftermarket knowledge. Hell you have seen and done E31 stuff I only thought a dream!

JFR, I very happy with the steering wheel. It was 100% as you described! No where in this thread did I suggest contrary. In fact, I like the notion of a multifunction wheel so much I bought another (incidentally, same issue regarding its rear design being completely different). The fact remains though, and while your right, I should if "...want it installed, Buy the parts to install it." I don't know what those other parts to buy to mount it are ;stickoutt!

I have spoken with other E31ers and they asked how to adapt it as well, so I figured, instead of doing it offline, it would help to have a thread on it made.

I fully admit, I *AM* asking for your thoughts on the matter since, as far as I am aware, you are the only one who ever made it work, other then Martin (who I have only had limited ability getting in touch with). How am I approaching this the wrong way? By asking advice specially from the most qualified member in the regard? :confused

I guess 'tone' doesn't come across very well in text, especially when (for the last two posts) you post from your phone resulting in rather terse posts :stickoutt.

My sincerest apologies for giving the wrong impression/missunderstanding!

On topic, the only approach I could think of making it work would be to JBWeld the triple screw mounts, file down the distal "nub" as well as the file down to make the same proximal nub...in effect recreating the same pattern to adapt the standard slip ring. However this does not take into account the running the wires....for which I was thinking of just drilling an extra port into the wheel. That all said, it seems like the long, and wrong approach to the problem, given a slip ring mod exists and if I am wrong, the wheel itself has been damaged. I for the life of me have not been able to figure though, so well then we start on this thread before I start hacking away at it....

One way to get a newer style wheel to work. Your milage may vary.

I love your way with words Craig. :cool Now that is beauty and craftsmanship in action!

In further detail, I am intrigued that your slip ring very closely matches my E31's standard slip ring. I will go on to extrapolate that the design of the Msport's "hub" closely matches (or should say 'match' prior to modification) the E46 multifunction wheel. In a nutshell, I think altering the wheel to work will exactly match your work in terms of method, even if the 'names' are different, so to speak.

All in all, artful adaption of the Stage II wheel. :cool
