View Full Version : Seriously considering NITROUS...have some ?'s

Ok....so I've been researching the use of nitrous for the passed 3 or so weeks as I'm about to setup a pretty badass 55-shot dry system on a friends 98 accord 4cyl for his birthday. I've done a LOT of reading and I understand what it's all about. I'm gaining more and more confidence as the days go by of how safe it could be if installed and tuned properly. I know i know "cheap thrills"....."cheating"...yada yada yada. But before I seriously take consideration into buying a kit....I had a few questions to ask anyone who knows.

1) I've heard rumors about the 2.8L (328) and 3.2L (96+ m3) engines being changed into aluminum blocks from cast iron as the pre 96 (i.e. 95 m3 or 92-95 325) and that the heat generated from nitrous would simply melt the internals of the car. Is this true? From what I've read, nitrous will yeild the same boost/increase in temperature as a turbo or S/C setup would (albeit the turbos/superchargers increase boost mechanically while nitrous does it chemically). So wouldn't that mean/apply the same towards S/C's and turbos? But at the same time countless 328's and 96+ m3's get S/Cs all the time with no problems.

2) I'm not too familiar with my car's timing (96 328i) but I know its self adjusting. Can it be adjusted? If I was to run nitrous it's recommend that the timing be retarded just a tad (I'm aware of the ill effects). Can I do so? Also, if I cant adjust the timing...does anyone know off hand if I could use an MSD Ignition System (as seen here: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=22441 )? Basically what it does is send spark to the plugs (controlled by a computer so you could set it to retard the timing for example only at WOT, which is when the nitrous is activated and spraying) but I've only seen it applied on cars that have spark plug wires, like hondas and domestic muscle cars (not on cars that have coils like we have). Would I still be able to set the system up? If so, how?

3) It's also suggested that fuel coming to the cyclinders be raised as well. With the imports...they can buy a Fuel Pressure Regulator (as seen here: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=13713 ) which is just tapped into the fuel line before its sent into the fuel injectors. Would there be anywhere for me to tap this regulator into? On the honda's it goes here (you can either fit the FPR or the Fuel Pressure Gauge):

If anyone has installed nitrous (I doubt anyone) on a bmw (besides the dude with the 750iL) and especially on a 96+ one...can you please let me know of any info that you have on their system? Has it been running good or bad? I'd like to hear less of the "dont do it man your engine will explode stuff" and more constructive critism if anything. I've had a sudden need for speed recently (especially being more confident that I could setup a properly running nitrous system although I'm not quite sure how to do it on the bimmer) and $400 is just way within my reach to let it pass by. I hope you guys understand :D

finally someone else is seriously considering nitrous for their bimmer!.....ive been looking into it as well and helped my brother install his into his 01 mitsu eclipse....some of your questions i cant really answer :( .....but so what shot are you thinking of running on your car??? when you get the system....are you going to get colder plugs or larger fuel injectors?? personally i hate it when all the people say "dude your gonna blow ur motor!!! huh huh huh huh" it pisses me off because they dont research this shit and just take that idea and run with it....it an be run safely!...i assume youll hook up the throttle activation switch??? you can also get a window type thing for the rpm's to tell the nitrous when to inject....example: only between 3500-6000 rpms!....also, even the standard dry kits come with fuel pressure regulator sensors where if for some reason the pressure is wrong....it cuts of the nitrous at the solenoids....
as for the first question....i don think its a problem about the blocks or whether or not theyre aluminum or what:confused:
Lou put nitrous ito his ti.....
second question....it would be nice if we could use that ignition timing system but i have no idea and would also like to know!
third question....as with the fuel pressure regulator thing, my bro was talking about that and he was gonna get it so he could conrtol the air/fuel when he as injecting....its a good idea and i think we could use it....would larger injectors do the trick or no???
once again, BLOWN_M ran or runs nitrous on his ti.....maybe he knows or not......but actually....what i would do (since i know that NOS lists kits for bmw's even though theyre sort of universal) is call up the holley NOS tech department....ive called them before and im SURE they could answer at least some of your questions.....the # is (714) 546-0592.....good luck and let me know!!!

my brother 232is racer know a bit about nitrous. My other bro has an 85 shot on his eclipse, and he was also thinking about it. You could try asking him. Also, I swear I saw a guy on here w/ a 330ci who was running a 75 shot or something. I'll see if I can find the thread.:book: :book:
