View Full Version : Boostaholics Anonymous
val98m3sc 07-08-2003, 03:46 PM My name is Val and I'm a boostaholic.
I accept that I have an uncontrollable problem when it comes to modifying cars. It is a disease and it is genetic. When I was a kid, my dad drove an E-Type Jaguar that was always in the shop and my mom had 2 different Datsun Z-cars. Even in their 50s, my mom's car is a twin-turbo (Audi Allroad), and my dad had his Mercedes lowered on Bilsteins & H&Rs. Mechanics have always been like members of my family, someone to share your problems with over a can of motor oil.
My addiction to cars and boost wreaks havoc on my life. As well as my parents, many of my friends are fellow boostaholics. I spend more time with my mechanic than I do dating. I bought a supercharger instead of paying my taxes. I rent my apartment because I've spent the equivalent of a down payment on a very nice house to modify two different cars over the past three years. Last year, I maxed out my credit card buying BBS wheels. I think about cars more than I do about sex. I dream about cars almost every night. I uncontrollably watch and get excited over the Speed Channel and other car-related shows.
I really want to change, really I do. I want to pay of all my credit cards and get the IRS off my back. I have a great job and am paid very well but my addiction prevents me from getting ahead financially. And my obsession with cars prevents me from socializing with "normal" people. I have broken up with women because of the way they drive or the kind of car they drive. I am unable to date women my own age because they find my obsesssion immature, so I resort to dating 19-year-olds who really like it when I drive them fast in my car (it's horrible, really, it is). My old GTI beat a longtime friend's C43 AMG in a street race and our friendship was ruined as a result, he never recovered from the humilation.
But then I get in my car, the road opens up, I feel the boost kick in, and I want nothing more than to sell everything I own to make my car faster.
So I am glad that I am here tonight at this meeting of Boostaholics Anonymous so we can share our stories of how our obsession with boost and car modifications is destroying our lives, and to discuss our sick desire to beg, borrow, or steal to get more boost.
Please share your similar stories...

val98m3sc 07-08-2003, 05:04 PM To join all you have to do is share your stories of how your obsession has affected your life.
My first post is toungue-in-cheek but at the same time completely true. My life probably would be a lot easier without this obsession but I would be a much less interesting person. And I would have much less fun.
PECivil 07-08-2003, 05:14 PM when I got the SC I thought all would be well and I would be satisfied.....hahahaha
WHAT A FOOL I WAS
boost is more addictive than CRACK I say
can I have another hit, man?
Flawless 07-08-2003, 05:14 PM Hmmm.... I dont have the problems to the extent of your god like obsession with cars. But I also seem to think alot about cars, too much for my own good.
It all started with my first car after I finished HS. Before that, I swer to you, I had no interest at all with cars. I never understood why people were into cars. I though, you just go from one place to another. Than after I had my first car, a whole new world opened to me. But I still was not into modifying, althought my first car was a civic.
Than I started thinking why would people want fast cars? I mean my civic was at good speeds and able to get from one point to another. Than I drove a freinds 99 Cobra, and it begun. My thirst for speed. The power of that car was freighting compared to the civic. It was exhilarating. After that day, my thirst for speed begun. Although not as much as you, I cant stop thinking about cars.
///Dom 07-08-2003, 05:17 PM Allow me to introduce myself…My name is Dom and I drive a 97 M3/4 and have always toyed with the idea of S/C- or T/B-ing my car. Unfortunately, fear of voiding an extended warranty and somehow damaging my car has prevented me from going through with my FI fantasies (yes, I was a “boostaholic” in denial). :boobies: However, now that the extended warranty is expiring, and my fears of boosting have been laid to rest (thanks to all who participate in this forum), I’ve decided to come out of the closet and jump into the world of FI! More to come…
val98m3sc 07-08-2003, 05:20 PM Estorilblau, true boostaholics couldn't care less about stuff like warranties, CARB approval, smog checks, or loud exhaust that screams "pull me over".
If you care about your warranty you probably don't have a problem (yet...).
///Dom 07-08-2003, 05:32 PM Trust me val, I'm already addicted...I bought Phillip's RMS Stage 2+ setup, and already have a list of related toys to complete *my* setup! :devillook
Things to do before SC install:
-leak down and compression check (just to be safe)
-new high-flow alumimum radiator
-fan delete & Spal fan install
-H&R Sports
-custom programming by AA
-AA alcohol injection (?)
I know I'm leaving something out...feel free to add to the list!
:)
Future projects:
-widebody kit
Now do I get a good 'ol boostaholic welcome?!?!? :astromile
val98m3sc 07-08-2003, 05:38 PM Estorilblau, if its coming up soon, you should get your car smogged and renew your registration before you install the SC.
It's nice to meet a fellow Californian who doesn't whine about CARB approval (oh no it's not CARB approved, what do I do? Waa waa waa!). Rules are made to be broken, by people like us. Perhaps you are a true boostaholic.

More to come.....
I have always enjoyed out-driving my friends. In highschool, and the first years of college, my home was always the location we would gather at. Whenever we were heading back from an outing we would race to see who could get there first. Not on the same paths mind you, sometimes completely different streets, seeing who could push it and arrive sooner. Eventually I had to get my own car (I couldn't get my Grandparents GMC Jimmy or Ford Econoline to go fast enough, even though I rarely lost). So my first ride was a 1974 GTO. Had an engine swap to a big block 400 and an auto tranny swap to a 4 speed saginaw out of a 76 Vega. Yes, those were the days.
I had a dry spell for a while... not getting the power and enjoyment out of driving that I so longed for. I bottled up my feelings for 5 years as I drove an '85 Bonny and then a '00 Chrysler 300M. With the last car, I finally realized that I had the numbers all messed up.
Now, I'm the proud owner of a '98 BMW M3/4 - 5 speed. I know, I know... it is still mostly stock. But I've only owned it since Feb. Since that time I have completed and revised 100's of spread sheets trying to determine exactly what I wish to do with the car.
That answer finally came a few months back when I discovered a "tiny" post about a twin-screw supercharger currently in development. I had finally found the stimpee for my ren. I've since started ordering parts. First, the UUC Twin Silencer, then cryo tempered Euro Floating Rotors, Hawk HP Plus pads, and steel brake lines. Next is clutch, short shifter, GC coil overs, and sway bars. I'll soon be ready for positive power from positive displacement.
Stimpee!!! Can you hear me!?!?!? I need your project finished! I need the power that only a positive displacement blower can provide! Feed my need for boost! :atom

///3oris 07-08-2003, 06:14 PM Hello, my name is Boris, and as everyone already knows, I'm a boost-a-holic. I don't know when this problem started... probably after my friends all started getting RX-7's and Supras... they still don't understand why I have an M3 instead of an MKIV Supra... but I tells ya.... nothing beats an M3! Nothing! The only places I thought it lacked was in power delivery... and that's been solved (to my liking). The M3 is a dual-personality car.... I can drive around in it in a business suit or in my t-shirt and shorts. I can talk to business men and get nods from older people as well as the occasional "d00d.... awesome car" from a youngster.
I'm just glad my relatives understand why I do this. Actually... they don't understand.... they think it's a hobby. I think it's more of an addiction. Good thing I can control myself otherwise I'd have one of the fastest M3's but a broken bank acct. (Does that not make me a boost-a-holic then?).
Thanks for reading.... I don't have to write much since I post like daily :)
Boris

Just smogged it a few months ago. Amazing how everything just falls into place, isn't it? As for upcoming smogs...I've got a hook up. :devillook Now then, back to researching and shopping for parts!
I don't drive 55...or 65...or 75...
jonsibal 07-08-2003, 06:55 PM funny thread..
ok heres my story..
I started having some problem with boost after chatting with Shingo (TURBOBMW.COM) within a year after I got my car. He convinced me and pushed me over the edge after he ran high 12s on 1/4 mile on his stock 325 motor with AA's stage 1 for 325s. I contacted AA in Dec 1997 and convince them to sell me the stage 1 kit eventhough I had an automatic tranny at the time, I just had to have it. Ofcourse the tranny didnt last so I end up swapping it to a 5 speed tranny from an M3.
I got distracted for a lil bit and focused on other areas of the car but then 2 years ago, I decided to pull out my old stage 1 gen 1 set up and upgrade it. Yanked the turbo and sent it to Turbonetics where they took the old 17C wheel and replaced it with a TO4B, and they also enlarged the inlet at the same time. Converted it to external wastegate set up, got new piping done from JP PERFORMANCE together with the twin DTM exhaust, new intercooler and turbo electronics. Car performed nicely but as you all know... "its never enough"
So now, I took the 2.5 motor out and picked up a 3.0 motor from a 95 M3. Building the bottom end with forged pistons, running a stage 3 turbo with new wastegate, upgraded fuel pump from AA, thermal coated the ehxaust manifold and redoing the piping for the low level intake set up. Also picked up the stage 4 clutch kit from clutchmasters.com and couple of new components aswell.
My story is not as bad as others but its good to see that Im not alone here..lol

Flip_Side_the_Pint 07-08-2003, 07:08 PM you post describes my life almost to a T.
My dad had Z cars twin charged one N/A and one stock.. My dad now drives porshes and small fast cars like them, hes pretty die hard when it comes to things like that. HEs almost like lotus thinking small and light weight rather then peak h/p. Now I think the same way and a few times it has scared me, debating my friends about h/p and I start to think about handling rather then peak power...I've lost contacts and friends that way. I too think less about sex and more about cars and only talk to girls that at least understand why my car is the way it is(stiped and gutted). I only put reverse osmosis water in my car and my dad makes fun of me because his car is air cooled.
Its sad...............

Juan ///M325 07-11-2003, 10:37 AM Hello:
My name is Juan...and I'm a boostaholic:D It started at the early age of 16. My brother had a '72 Z-28 that was faster than a barefoot jackrabbit on a hot greasy griddle in the middle of August. My next door neighbor had a '78 Mazda RX-3 sp that was doing 13 flat in the 1/4 mile. My first car was a '77 toyota corolla with dual sidedrafts, cam, heads and the usual mods. For the next 3 years my thirst for speed could not be quenched. I went to college, gave up the car for books:( and became a more mature person:devillook .
I had a relapse in '89 when I purchased a Buick Grand National (God I miss that car) and a Kawasaki ZX-10 Ninja. By the time I was done with the bike, I was going down the strip in 10.49 seconds. I found myself killing everything on the road (Porsches, BMWs, Corvettes) you get the idea. I also found myself many times at speeds of over 175mph:nono . Once again gave it up, got married with kids and thought that my addiction was behind me.
Two years ago, a friend of mine let me drive his E46 M3. I was like "Luke, come to the dark side". I was very impressed with the car, he laught and told me that the car was a slow POS. We went back to his house and told me to drive his '98 M3/4 Dinan Supercharged. I started the car and he said to me " drive it as if it was your car" . I said "well I don't know":evil2 . I followed his advised and I let it rip  . I could not believed the torque and the speed on that car. Right then and there I knew it was over. Just when you think you're out, they'll pull you back in :dunno . I'm a family man now, minivan and all, but somehow an AA supercharger found its way into the engine compartment of my E36 325:devillook . I'm happy with performance (I'm an old fart now), but more upgrades are on my Christmas list. One thing is for sure, I need more than 8 PSI :help

Adam P 07-11-2003, 12:33 PM After reading these posts a few times, I realized, I need to post my story!
I am a boostaholic! Ive never owned a boosted car before, hell I dont own one now! But, in the past 4 years I have build 4 street machines for local customers that were all assoiated with MAD BOOST.
A 97 or 98 GST eclipse was my first experence with boost. We tore the motor down with 800 miles and made it stronger then shit, then, upgraded ball bearing 16g and a 100 shot of nos for those times when the owner wanted it! This car was a monster, the boost was so addicting I offered to buy the car before he even got in it post work being done. In 3rd gear at 45 the tires would go up in smoke, so addicting, but really not good for some one like me who loves the corners!
After that we did a turbo neon for a local guy who said "he wanted the fastest neon in the state", we feel short but he was happy. Then on to a 87 or 88 awd turbo toyota celleca(sp?), this car was so awesome!
Well today I paid cash for my AA SC, its for my Mcoupe. I decided when I was looking for a car that it would have to have balls, and some form of boost. I didnt want your typical car, meaning a supra, eclipse, and so on. I have had an e30 m3 for about 5 years and have become real loyal to BMW over the years with the 3 that I currently own, and 2 that were sold off. So the coupe it was, I remeber driving one when I had my older 318ic in for service one day. I was so happy in the car then, that I knew I was always gonig to want one! But, on that same day I drove a M3 lightweight, so the experence was flawed some by the mixxing of the 2 cars. But in febuary I got the coupe, and it was only a matter of time before I could pay for an sc.
And now, here I am.. not sleeping at night, waiting, wondering, hows it giong to be, ya no, boost, in my coupe! I ask my self all sorts of questions, will I want more, yes, can I afford it, no..... I already got gauges on the way, and other goodies that might be needed so I dont have to wait too long for the install!
Im a boostaholic, because I dont think about anything else!!
Adam P..
val98m3sc 07-11-2003, 06:17 PM In typical boostaholic fashion I had a vivid car dream last night. I had one of my old cars (an 89 Nissan 240SX) and my mechanic was in the dream and he did an SR20det swap (which is bizarre because in real life he doesn't touch Japanese cars). And I was racing around the city in some sort of race and the car was really fast and handled amazing and I was sliding around turns and smoking everyone.
I think I had this dream because I watched all of BMW The Hire films on the DVD I got with the recent Roundel last night. But why was I driving my 240SX?
Maybe because I used to drive my 240 like the movie with the M5 and Madonna in it. You could toss that 240 around turns (it was pretty slow although had decent torque, but it didn't matter because the handling was so great). I would do J-turns and 180s. It helps to be a teenager too do be able to do really stupid stuff, especially when your parents pay for tires and everything. In my M3 I try to avoid doing anything stupid that is going to cost me more money.
They say boostaholics dream often about their addiction, last night was proof. If a sex dream is a wet dream, what do you call this? A boost dream? (SR20det is a turbo)
