View Full Version : After filling...
Jenya 11-21-2008, 12:20 PM I think I figured out my problem this morning. I went to fill my car, unscrewed the cap the pressure went down (shwoosh sound). After I paid and got into my car went to start it I had to crank it and press the pedal down till it would start rought... I think with the loss of pressure in the fuel tank it causes my long/rougher starts.
Same with when I let my car sit for 3 days and went to start it, there was no pressure and same thing.. but if I drive it and don't open the tank cap it starts fine..
Any ideas?
TxGR8White 11-21-2008, 12:34 PM fuel tank breather valves up front, passenger side of the engine. Can you hear them "clicking" when the engine is running? (you can also feel the pulsing with your hand if you cannot hear it. Make sure both of them are working.
Jenya 11-21-2008, 12:40 PM Will do when I get to the car at lunch time. Thanks.
rockytt 11-21-2008, 01:00 PM Uh, it's not a rocket motor-these tanks aren't pressurized to deliver fuel...
Jenya 11-21-2008, 01:17 PM Well, it's the only thing that causes problems... after fueling and after letting it sit for 3 + days.
8eights 11-21-2008, 01:32 PM The gas can come out of a bucket and it will still run, How are your filters, Fuel pumps? Any moisture on top of the pumps? Fuel pressure regulators good, What's the pressure.
Ahmed303 11-21-2008, 02:11 PM I'd check the following way
Fuel Filters (Could be clogged)
Fuel Pumps (One may not be working)
FPR
Fuel Rail (Could be a blockage)
But then, I am not the tech.
Jenya 11-21-2008, 06:25 PM Is it possible to check the fuel pumps by just lifting the car and looking or do you have to drop fuel tank? Also checking fuel pressure, what would be the best approach for hooking up the tool?
How do I check for a faulty fuel pump?
tdotbimmer 11-21-2008, 07:29 PM I think the fuel pump should be checked. If my experience with my e46 is transferrable to the e31, when the gas is really really low which you should never let happen, the pumps arent kept cool enough so you may get some starvation and hesitation on start and at stops. Also check the fuel filter.

I would like to put that one to bed! The fuel pumps have all the fuel they pump running thru them. They do NOT rely on the fuel around them to keep them cool. As long as fuel is running thru them they are fine, doesn't matter how low the fuel level is. If there is starvation, the engine will die and the pumps will be shutdone by the DMEs, but that is when the tank is completely empty.
This applies to ALL BMWs. This is probably one of the most propagated myths that should be BUSTED!

Is there an anormally?
pinned 11-22-2008, 01:41 AM The fuel pumps are accessed under the rear seats. Easiest thing to do would be to check fuel pressure at the firewall. IIRC they (2 separate lines) feed the fuel rails at the rear of the motor slightly to the drivers side. The return line is on the passenger side rear of motor. Kind of a pain to undo the hose clamps but it can be done. You can also check at the pump but I am not a big fan of fuel vapor inside your car (numerous ingnition sources and confined area).

numeorous ignition sources???
