I have a 1992 E31. My keys are the mechanical type and looking at the nice features of my E46 keys with fob, I found this key (uncut) on the bay with similar features plus alarm. Does the e31 key come with a chip inside and thus will need to be cut by the dealer? Or is there an OEM key and alarm that can be purchased directly from the dealer 16 years later?:lol

There are no flip keys for E31. The buttons for post-'94 keys are integrated into the back part of the key (yours should be like that since u have a '95). There is; however, a very nice leather 'sheath' that flips/rotates off-on the rear part of the key. The leather sheath is still available I think.

yeah I saw the sheath today!

I was wondering if that would work with my key, hmmm perhaps I will get the sheath.

Don't you have one of those keys I described? The sheath comes with a plastic screw + cap that goes thru the key hole. That's how it attaches to the key. There's a snap button on the actual key part to keep it snug when fitted. Looks/works great!

Could you take a picture? My 97 has the same key more or less as my 98 e38...

Thread jackers!
So who should be cutting my blank key? Any locksmith? Or dealer?

I think that you probably need to get the dealer to cut the key for you. At least they can program the remote while they're at it.

I had mine cut at the local Lexus dealer (was only $5.00 - as opposed to the $25 at BMW)

Which remote? The aftermarket remote? I am a bit lost. Did 1992 E31 come factory with keyless entry, engine immobilizer, and alarm? If so, I will rather buy OEM key and fob. If not, can a locksmith cut the new key or can I supply the dealer with the flip key from the bay and have it cut? Does the mechanical key have a chip?

Seems to me that I read that I have some kind of keyless entry available on my 92 850. The manual shows and talks about a keyless remote that can be programmed with some sort of infared light on my shift console. It's located on the opposite side of the ASC button.
I also found some kind of flashlight (that currently doesn't work) in the glove box.

Ok. So I take it there is no chip inside the original key like the newer cars. I expected the E31 to be ahead of its time so these questions stem from that. I will email the seller and enquire more then call my local bimmer dealership and see what they say.

The early cars had a transmitter key-fob. The IR sensor on the very early cars was located on the rear view mirror. The LED on the console is just an indicator light.

Mine also came with a remote starter, by Prestige.

I had the remote, but it didn't start the car?

Did anyone else have this dealer installed option?

It was apparently a dealer installed option in Illinois, back in 95'.

That's kind of off topic, sorry
