View Full Version : WTB:1991 Bmw 850i(E31) Instrument Cluster. Iamnotkento 11-14-2008, 01:19 PM Like the title says. Pm is the best way to contact me. I can not find this thing anywhere on web. TxGR8White 11-14-2008, 01:26 PM You will also need the matching EKM for the instrument cluster to work. What exactly is wrong with your cluster? Wuffer 11-14-2008, 03:21 PM Have a bunch - how many you want? 8-) Iamnotkento 11-14-2008, 06:18 PM The gauges goes off and on. Its on off mode most of the time but comes on every now and then. The mileage disappears, gauges dont work. Took it to a specialist they said its the instrument cluster. Matching ekm number? what exactly is this thing. SupremeBein 11-14-2008, 07:31 PM The gauges goes off and on. Its on off mode most of the time but comes on every now and then. The mileage disappears, gauges dont work. Took it to a specialist they said its the instrument cluster. Matching ekm number? what exactly is this thing. I had the same problem except my milage always worked just the gauges stopped working, I replaced the cluster and EKM with one from another car. The EKM is the module that controls the cluster. Could be ether the cluster or EKM that has failed. The cluster could have a bad back plane (circuit board) but the last time I checked on one from Gault there were none in the US or Europe and they said BMW wouldn't give them an answer if there would be anymore made. That was when I bought a used cluster and EKM. Iamnotkento 11-14-2008, 08:02 PM oh ok. so i would have to buy the EKM and the cluster together? I have no luck finding the cluster or the ekm on ebay or any other place. TxGR8White 11-14-2008, 08:44 PM The EKM and the cluster are "married" at the factory. What that means is that if you swap out either one without the other, then you odometer reads out a bunch of "E"s. This is to keep mileage fraud to a minimum. The EKM module is located under the left dashboard with the General Module and the LKM. As said, it could be the EKM as well. Do yourself a favor and only buy a "matched" set. I sold Supremebein his set and as he stated, no problems now. carspainc.com 11-14-2008, 09:24 PM The EKM and the cluster are "marrie" at the factory. What that means is that if you swap out either one without the other, then you odometer reads out a bunch of "E"s. This is to keep mileage fraud to a minimum. The EKM module is located under the left dashboard with the General Module and the LKM. another thing i learned courtesy of the gr8white. :) Iamnotkento 11-14-2008, 10:51 PM Thanks. Anyone have a set for sale? TTTXGreg 11-15-2008, 01:49 AM Have a bunch - how many you want? 8-) did you miss this post from Wuffer? He has what you need. Since it is intermit, it would be worth reseating the connectors to the cluster and EKM and see what happens. Iamnotkento 11-15-2008, 09:47 AM I already sent him a pm. He didn't respond back to it yet. TTTXGreg 11-15-2008, 09:33 PM I already sent him a pm. He didn't respond back to it yet. Have you tried re-seating the connectors? It's worth a shot. Cluster and EKM will not be cheap! Wuffer 11-15-2008, 10:07 PM Responded....check your messages! 8-) Auraraptor 11-16-2008, 03:10 PM You can swap out the mileage unit right? That is the part that is matted to your EKM. TxGR8White 11-16-2008, 04:06 PM You can swap out the mileage unit right? That is the part that is matted to your EKM. You need BOTH of them (EKM & Instrument cluster) Auraraptor 11-16-2008, 04:24 PM You need BOTH of them (EKM & Instrument cluster) Not was I was asking....sorry the question was unclear: On the Instrument cluster, if one buys a used cluster, can't one can swap the mileage module with your cars and have said cluster work just fine with your own EKM? Pretty sure I recall that being the case. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=EG43&mospid=47337&btnr=62_0084&hg=62&fg=05 Number 8 TxGR8White 11-16-2008, 08:22 PM The "mileage" resides in the back plate. It is usually the back plate that fails, thats why you change out the pair (EKM & cluster). TTTXGreg 11-16-2008, 11:39 PM the mileage is in both units. the only way to replace either the EKM or the cluster backplane is if it is new and uncoded. If you do it that way, your mileage stays the same. If a new EKM, it gets its info from the cluster and marries after 8 hours. If a new cluster, it gets its info from the EKM and marries after 8 hours. When you change both with a used set, your car will have the mileage of the donated pair. The mileage module referred to is only the LCD display and contains no unique info to the specific car it's in. Auraraptor 11-17-2008, 12:12 AM Thanks for the correction guys! |
