A local body shop donated a pretty complete 850ci to our high school car club. We have considered selling it as a package deal (listed in parts cars,) or parting it out to raise some cash to buy an E30 to turn into a track car. Lately the thought of putting it back together has started to creep into our mindset. This car is pretty much completely disassembled, with the beginnings of some body work the p.o. was having done to shave the side moldings from the body. What would you do?

Part it out or sell as whole and call it a day. Would take 1000's of hours to put that back together. With out another car as a guide very difficult. Too many parts and pieces. Just ask Sick Puppy and they will tell you. Hope this helps. Take care.

Carter

or use that car as a track car. i mean it looks pretty much there already.

I think I'd have to agree with the others - be a cool project, but parts are $$$

Part it out. No used investing more money in a car that bare.

strip it to the bare bones and put a mid-90's 6cyl and 5speed in it. It'd be a bit underpowered for competition, but without wiring/interior/sound deadening it'd probably be just as quick as a stock 850 with the 6 in it with minimal investment.. :stickoutt

parting this car out won't net you a whole lot of cash, you wouldn't be able to make much more than the cost of a decent e30 if you ask me.

that said I've built a dozen or so 24v powered e30s and they are a blast to drive. The 8 would be far more unique than a spec e30 build or the like

edit: also the 8 has a more rigid chassis and is much more easily accessible for the non-expert person building a cage...

Seems it`s not parted enough to not be rolling.. does it drive.. IŽd track it if it does.

Pretty much in pieces, but all parts still here. A hell of a deal for the right buyer. Selling as a package or parting it out seems the way to go, though for a second there turning it into a track car seemed like an option. Just an't afford parts once it inevitably gets bent or blown up.

wheels should be the last thing to go on a parts car...
you want to keep it mobil as long as you can.

about the profit of parting a car. since it was donated and not in an aparent crash.
it will be well worth the effort.
they will wind up with about 3 -4 gand. provided the parts are descent and useable.

Very true once you get bent parts they will be spendy to correct, Or is there a body shop R.O.P

I looked at this car many months ago, interested in a roller for a 600 HP engine conversion, BUT, it was completely disassembled and I am not about to tackle a project of that magnitude.

It sounds like some parts and pieces have been sold already so if that is the case, part it out, don't look back.

The E31 is not a car for learners, it is very complex and would require a massive amount of time and money to even get it back to a "roller" status, let alone a registered vehicle. Even for a track car, it is way to heavy and would require a lot of weight reduction parts removal/modification, that requires engineering know how.

There is a lot of money in the little parts you have, sell them, you will not regret it!

YMMV

Thanks for the interesting takes on what to do. At this time we are still looking to sell the package as a whole, and while there has been interest, it is beginning to look like we will parting the car. If it is not sold as a package in the next week or so I will start contacting those interested in parts.

Peace, Dennis

Car was sold as a package deal. Thanks to everyone for their input and interest. We're off to finding an E30 to twist into a spec. racer.

Peace, Dennis
