View Full Version : Brake Master Cylinder Help Needed

Ok ok, maybe flogging a dead horse here but...

My "oil pressure switch" is leaking a bit--certainly a common thing. I just bought a new Oil Pressure Switch and the accompanying Brake Pressure Differential Switch. These 2 parts are also known as the "Circulating Pressure Warning Switch" and the
"Hydraulic Pressure Switch"....

Nomenclature aside, do I need to disconnect the entire master cylinder in order to remove/replace both switches? Is it me or are the damn switches torqued down insanely hard?!? :mad Can I just remove the switches and replace them without disconnecting all 4 pipes? I do know about pumping the brakes 20-30x 'till firm as a rock. I can't get the damn switches to budge (I didn't remove the entire master cylinder though).

Anybody got any tips for an inept idiot like me? :embarrasm

TIA!

just remove the switches, and they are torqued just like you think

but watch out...
when i did it i messed up the engine pay pretty well.
the lower switch got pressure on it.
might wanna untwist the thing with a towel in hand or so.
somthing to catch a spray of liquid

Thanks for the tip. I'll take your advice about the towel. I was wondering how much pressure & liquid would be left inside the unit. I figured it would be a pain in the ass--like all things E31 :D

pump the brakes until hard and then you will have depressurized the system. Towel is still a good idea.

24mm Deep Socket is the key! Real easy and quick. Not messy if you depressurize (just a few drops of brake oil comes out).

no bother, the heads are all still sitting here...

...and yes, mine was ultrasonically cleaned during the restoration, aren't they all done that way??

I did! Too bad I only had a soft brush (it didn't last long). But I just picked up a bunch of cheap hard bristle toothbrushes :D
