View Full Version : So what does the collective think about rear spoilers?

I think most of you frown upon it right?

I thought this might look pretty sporty:

IMHO, the one to get, if one at all, is the OEM CSi wing. It also has a brake light integrated.

JFR, it is the same wing as that found on E36 M3s.

I am not a fan of spoilers in general, especially when it's the big "wingy" ones. For the 8, I think the lines are so clean as they are that when a spoiler is added, it makes a mess of things.

If I were to do a spoiler at all, I would only get what Koizumi has on his. I forget the name or style though.

A spoiler like that belongs on an mk4 supra imho.. haha 8 body lines are perfect for the spoiler-less look imo.

I have one like that, but it's coming off when I can face up to horrible rusty holes that it's going to leave behind.

spoilers bug me. they dont do anything on our cars, they need to be at least in line with the roof or slightly below to increase downforce and even then...its not like we're driving in f1 or lemans.
although, the little lip spoiler on some of the E46's is a nice detail.

leave this crap to the VW Golf community. Looks silly on an E31 IMO.

Too bad they never raced the E31 in any racing series...it would have been interesting to see an E31 in professional pure race livery.

+1. I like the clean look myself. It makes the rear taller, of which I am not a big fan. I would rather low and wide!

Hello, my name ist Harry, and I´ve got to tell you something ;-)

Too bad they never raced the E31 in any racing series...it would have been interesting to see an E31 in professional pure race livery.

Are you sure? I know 2 E31-Racers(VLN Germany, SS in Finnland) and I have heard about a third one(Kumho a CSi)...
BTW the plan to start with an ALMS-8series was destroyed by a change of the rules. The 6 bodys for building the race cars had been in the U.S...

Yesterday I wanted to start an E31-racecar-thread, but I´m not allowed to post imgs and urls - so, if someone want´s to help me to get the permission, I will show you lots of pics and facts about E31-racers ;-)

Best regards,

Okay, let this be the 2nd one :D

My 92 850i M70 had a spoiler too when I bougt it and I think, that it´s not to bad for savety because it´s the M-spoiler with the 3rd brakelite.

we tried something on a 928s and the difference of having a spoiler or not
was 60lbs downforce at max speed.
meaning you might as well fill your tank and have the same
effect

IMHO the OEM wing, out of those most used, is the ugliest. For some time I only liked the little plastic profile Mark and Koizumi have but then I saw this http://news.caradisiac.com/La-photo-du-jour-BMW-Serie-8-Hamann and started to like it. I think the wheels and sideskirt is nice aswell btw.

Umm..... why does it matter what the "collective" thinks about spoilers, wheels or whatever? Its your car - you bought it, you own it and you have to live with it. Personalize it however you want and who gives a rats arse about what the "collective" thinks. Are you gonna count votes and make a decision based on what others think?
And yes, both my cars have ACS spoilers on the rear deck and I like it that way...

Go for it if that is what you want. I agree with Wuffer on this. It is your car so do what you like not what others may or may not think. I have the very same rear spoiler on my 6 speed. There is a brake light in it. Will require some drilling and electrical connections. Take care. Regards,

Carter

Since I'm new to the whole E31 thing, it's always nice to get opinions of others with assisting in decision making. Ultimately, it's my decision but it's always nice to get opinions and views to make an informed decision.

You have this spoiler on your car? Any chance of posting pictures of it from different angles? I want to see what it looks like so that I can decide if that's the look I want.

well, the M-1 was a race car from the 70's.
that had maybe half the weight of an 8 series.

but again it's just my opinion. but there are very few to none
8 series at the rice boy hall of shame website for a reason.

Did you notice that the riceboy pages last update came in 2001 :)

Apparently it isn't a problem anymore. That was almost as much nostalgia as finding Mirsky's Worst of the Web archived somewhere.

Back to the subject--the whole thing seems to be whether you want something that looks wide or sorta squarish in the back.

Here is a mixed bag of spoilered and Nekkid 8's

Don't like them at all on the 8, IMO it looks much better without one. None of the high-end GTs have them, such as the Ferrari 550, Aston DB8, etc, as they just look tacky on such stylish machinery.

in the end it is subject you your own taste.
but if you have a spoiler this small, you might as well leave it off completely.

Completely agree. My taste will extend that thin spoiler to the end of the body and taper off. That will be functional yet understated. I just wanted to show the thin side of it. This spoiler is not long enough.

After looking at all these I would say the laminar lip is a little too understated to be considered a spoiler while the one shown above by Eight Ball has some fitment problems along with being a bit large for the car. The AC spoiler wins in my opinion if you want add a spoiler. Its fit and low design add to and do not distract from the natural lines of the car.

It does look very Supra like. The fitment on that would drive me crazy though. Is there no way to reduce the gaping towards the front of the spoiler?

I agree. If thin is your style, I would want something that looked more integrated. That fact that the lip doesn't extend far enough across the body would bother me.

aplina didn't do it because there is no performance improvement gained with a spoiler.
a full tank of gas has more downforce than any spoiler.

and yes, i agree, the race cars have a bigger one.
but they also weigh a lot less than our stock e31
