View Full Version : 850I 1991, engin coolant spray inside cabin! Help!
NeedWeed850 10-10-2008, 03:09 AM Today, i was in traffic with the car for a good 45 min. I was on the Red light when vapor and coolant started staring true the vents , mostly on the driver side, all the engine coolant dropped on the road in about 20 sec. it was poring out FAST. I shut down the car , waited 1 hour, refiled some engine coolant. The car started fine,i was about 2 km away from home so i took the risk and got back.
When it started to spray coolant the heating system was on , i guess that why it's sprayed inside.
Can someone tell me what I am looking at , radiator, or maybe loose radiator cooling line. All the cooling fluid pored out in 20 sec when it happened. Any advise will be appreciated, it's winter soon and i am not in a hurray to fix it, but still wish to do it so i can stat her every week when i wont drive it.
Thank you
Nik :)
8eights 10-10-2008, 03:39 AM Heater core or Plastic connecting pipe.
NeedWeed850 10-10-2008, 03:49 AM Thatks :-)
I just look at different people that had the same issue it looks that bmw sometimes are not tithing the pipes , i will jack it up in the morning and see what will come out of it.
8eights 10-10-2008, 04:19 AM Did the coolant exit from the inside of the car? If so, No need to jack it up, You will have to pull the radio, Shifter cover, Center console, The dash board and every part decorating it!
NeedWeed850 10-10-2008, 04:50 AM Yes the coolant entered by the vents , specially on the floor, 95% of the coolant pored from under the car in a flash, so i have to remove the radio , computer , heat control panel, the frame...? i don't understand why it pored in the car, for a sec i think caught fire there was smoke everywhere from the windshield vents. It looks like a pipe broke or separated, why do i have to remove all those things from the inside? do you think the coolant came from behind the radio?
thanks
8eights 10-10-2008, 05:04 AM Yes, It came from the back of the radio, It's a lot of work! Just be careful not to brake anything, The Dealer wants $2,200 to fix it, You can do it for $200.00 The Dash has to come out, It could also be a 50cent O-ring, But since your gonna be in there already.
You pretty much have to do this below, No need to strip the Steering Column down though, Remoing the Steering wheel is a must and the ignition switch cover but the switches can stay on the column. The core and pipes will be directly behind the radio behind a black plastic protection cover, Did you get steam on the Windshied prior to the failure? That's usually the warning sign.
NeedWeed850 10-10-2008, 05:14 AM Omg are for real , i just got the car yesterday , that is so frustrating, is it means that the heating system broke and the car is still drivable, or it's a must to fix before it can be started again. I know I may be able to do that, Do you know somewhere that someone shows the procedure, step byt step with photos? , i don't know nothing about the car yet, i know simple mechanics lol , it will be a challenge. Tell me more of what you know about this problem,
Thanks
NeedWeed850 10-10-2008, 05:19 AM I think i got fucked, and i will go to a bmw dealership for that sometimes next year , until then this car will sleep or i will sell it to someone that what to have fun with repairing it . What parts do i need to change the heating core and the pipes??
8eights 10-10-2008, 05:37 AM You will need the six parts that are pointed at, It will be a core which is only about 12/3 inches, It just looks big in the picture, 5 o-rings, Plastic support and the pipe that's pictured. There's a link below with the exact part numbers. If you do decide to do it and get the parts from Gault BMW, You will receive a discount.

NeedWeed850 10-10-2008, 05:51 AM By the way is the car drivable or no? The heat core is it just for heating and air cone, or is for the engine cooling as well??
carspainc.com 10-10-2008, 08:06 AM i've seen people just disconnect the heater core and plug the hoses to them.
but that was on an 8 series from down south
TxGR8White 10-10-2008, 09:33 AM you can splice the hoses together at the firewall for a temporary fix, although I imagine in Canada that it is a different story than here in Texas. Most likely the double black pipe broke. You can replace like what was shown in the picture above. I had to do this the first week of ownership as well, but took a more "radical " approach. The whole job took the better part of a day, without removing the entire dash.
Good luck

8eights 10-10-2008, 12:11 PM Here's some help below, If you do this, You will be glad you did, I was! You only use a few tools, My first one took 3 weeks, I did a little at a time, 2 hours here, 1 hour there, The pdf below is for good advice, You don't need to take all those parts off the car and you will see if you go at it.
A lot of Core reading here--------->>> http://forums.roadfly.com/forums/bmw/bmw-8-series-e31/search.php?st=heater+core+bypass&dosearch=Search%21
