View Full Version : DDM Tuning COs?
el_bobbo 10-07-2008, 11:09 AM Hey guys,
After our ride up to BavAuto, I realized how BADLY I need a new suspension. 134kmi of factory crap is shot. I was pricing out a set of Konis and Eibachs (I don't want the harsh ride from Bilsteins), and came across these guys in the Group Buy area. (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1078223)
They have a set of COs for the E36 M3 (and alot others) for $750, which is pretty damn cheap. The build looks excellent and lifetime warranty. (http://ddmtuning.com/ddmtubrcosu.html)
I'm curious if any of you up here are running this setup. Wondering how it is up on the roads here in NE.

///M3Augy 10-07-2008, 11:13 AM I would NOT buy those...
el_bobbo 10-07-2008, 11:23 AM Ok, do you have a good reason, or is that just an opinion?
I'm not being sarcastic, I'm looking for data cause I'm buying whatever I'm getting before the end of the week and I can snatch Konis on ebay for <$600 shipped right now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&viewitem=&item=350103614883
vertius 10-07-2008, 11:59 AM I thought about those DDM coilovers too, but they seem to good to be true. I wasn't going to make a move until next spring. I haven't seen any recent reviews on them yet, but I figured after this winter there would be some.
Anyway, you can't go wrong with Koni setup either. Will you keep the stock springs? I might go with the Konis and either the H&R OE springs or Vogtland springs. They don't lower the car much, which is what I am looking for. Damn driveway! :D
el_bobbo 10-07-2008, 12:06 PM hehe yeah I hear ya.
I was looking at the Pro Kit if I go with the Konis. <1" drop all the way around. Just enough to improve handling, but not rip off my oe lip :-)
You live in NB? Not sure if I've seen you around.

Yeah, I'm in the hood. :)
You have the Boston Green M3, that was parked across from Fay's a few months ago, right?
TopasBlau46 10-07-2008, 12:21 PM I'm pretty sure the verdict in a large thread over at E46fanatics was that very few people if any have bought them, or have had them for long enough of a time to know the quality and longevity of them. I've personally had some bad experiences with almost every product I've bought from D-D-M, so I would say no, but that's just me, because some people swear by them.
vibes 10-07-2008, 12:23 PM Look, they are good C/O's if you plan to just drive your car around. If you want race or track quality, they aren't.
JaredM3 10-07-2008, 12:29 PM Define Harsh...I like my billy sports and HR sports...No complaints...
APXDDM 10-07-2008, 12:34 PM Nobody has bought them except myself and angel318ti. There has only been one kit made available to the public for E46 and one kit for E36. There is quite a bit of additional info about the testing of them, problems that came up, solutions that came out of those problems, and where we are. Search around.
There are several pre orders for these in E36 and E46. Once I have them at the warehouse and they start shipping, there will be plenty more info on them.

el_bobbo 10-07-2008, 12:35 PM Thanks, this is the sort of input I'm looking for.
Not looking to track her now. She's be a track slut in about 2 years when I buy a new DD.
Yeah she parked at the shop across from Fay's. Goddamn nuts that secure the rotor were stripped and i needed em drilled out. He's a family friend, great mechanic. Only guy I trust to do my work when I can't do it myself.
el_bobbo 10-07-2008, 12:36 PM I read that whole thread this morning. I was under the assumption that a few people had them, my apologies.
I can't wait for a pre-order, so I guess I'll go the Koni route for now and watch these in the future.
Thanks.

Does that mean you own a set or is this just an assumption your making? My reason for suggesting that people stay away is pretty simple; I can't see the coils being successful mainly because they are coming from a company that up until now has been producing aftermarket lights and bumpers for our cars (some of which don't even fit right) and has no past experience (from what I have read) in suspension technology. I am sure some mechanical engineer designed them and they are "great" coilovers according to DDM but I would stick with something I know is half decent. That's just me though. Playing with suspensions can get dirty, a PITA, and very $$$. Especially when you are aiming for good ride comfort at the same time.
Keep an eye on the FS section here. I regularly see used H&Rs and GC's in or close to your price range. /.02
el_bobbo 10-07-2008, 12:47 PM Yeah, I live on this forum. I peruse the FS section almost everyday hehe.
Not too sure how I feel about the GC's though.
I'll shop all week then make a decision this weekend. My car is riding like a caprice station wagon. That drive up to Bav was awesome, especially the construction on 93N when it sounded like my shocks were gonna rip through the towers.

That's good to know.
I would like to check out your car once you get the suspension. I can probably lend you a hand if you do the suspension yourself.
Your car can be my test dummy for my driveway.
Just kidding. :D
el_bobbo 10-07-2008, 01:08 PM lol.
I have the spring compressors from AutoZone still in my trunk from another suspension install. Gotta be creeping up on that 90day mark :-P
Defintely check each others shit out once she's a more comfy ride.

Exactly.
el_bobbo 10-07-2008, 02:24 PM Ok, I think I'm gonna go with Konis and Vogtland. Looks nice a nice reliable combo with no negative feedback from any E36ers I can see on the forum. Decent drop (~1") and good warranty.
Search FTW.
Can get em both for about $800 shipped from the "bay"

That's a pretty good price.
Check purems.com
They have the Vogtland springs and I believe they still carry Konis. They don't have the Konis listed for our cars, so you might have to call. The springs are $221. Who knows, they might price match or give you a better deal.
el_bobbo 10-07-2008, 04:02 PM cool, thanks.
vertius 10-15-2008, 12:18 PM cool, thanks.
How did you make out? Were you able to order the goods? :D
el_bobbo 10-15-2008, 02:01 PM Yeah, I ended up ordering the Konis and Vogtlands. They should be here either friday or monday (holiday botched up shipping)
Gotta order some new spring pads and bump stops i think, then install it all.

Cool. :alright
Did you get a good deal from purems or did you ebay it?
el_bobbo 10-15-2008, 06:45 PM better deal through ebay, and he gave me a combined shipping discount.
came out to like $775 shipped for both.
