View Full Version : M5 (E39) Engine Oil...... WHAT MANUF/VISCOSITY ?
mthree 06-22-2003, 04:06 PM I have a 2000 M5 (E39) with the S62 Engine. What is the recommended engine oil manufacturer and viscosity for this vehicle?
I've heard the synthetic Castrol RS SAE 10W60 and SAE 5W30. What does the dealer use?
Please help.
Thanks.
mikemaster 06-22-2003, 10:43 PM IMO, go to the dealer and get the right stuff!
gtx510 08-06-2006, 11:06 PM 10W60
It's the dealer or...

10W60 up to 3/2000 and 5W30 after that?
I'd stick with 10W60 or something thicker than BMW Hi-Po 5W30.

forsaken 08-06-2006, 11:41 PM amsoil ftw!
ashamans 08-07-2006, 08:24 PM i think pintosyn, or something like that makes the oil for bmw
gtx510 08-07-2006, 10:30 PM Pentosin

I think they make a LL-01 oil but no 10W60.
Motul, Lubri-Moly, Amsoil, Castrol, Mobil1, etc. all make a good LL-01 oil.
Didn't BMW switch part way thru and say it was okay to use 5W30 in the later engines? But it was still ok to use 10W60.
I'd still use at least a xW40... GC in winter? pay attention to the HTHS (High-Temp High-Shear) numbers...
But the only way to know for sure what works really well would be to do oil analysis on the oil, when it's new and then after it's been used.
That's about $20-40 depending of how much you want tested. and the price can go up from there.

ashamans 08-08-2006, 09:28 PM i think the manual says xw40, like 5w40 in winter and 10w40 in the summer, but thats on my 99 540, maybe checking the maunual will be best
i used to work at a oil change shop, we liked mobil, lotta people liked amsoil and royal purple, i dont know about them but mobil-1 is widely available since its sold at walmart and other places for cheap, you can even get moble-1 15w50 ep a 15,000 mile oil
i plan to use the pintosin from this website

p.s. make sure your getting a good filter, great oil is nothing with a junk filter, the numbers on it should be close to 99%(single pass, multi pass)
mottati 08-09-2006, 05:30 PM there are some huge threads on this on the m5board.com but the simple answer is to follow the decal under the hood. Early cars, produced before 3/00 require castrol tws or rs 10/60. Note that RS is the old name, but there is now a new RS 10.60, at least in europe, that is NOT the same as TWS (which literaly stands for ten w sixty). TWS is only available in the US at the dealer, usually around $8-9 per liter. Production dates 3/00 and later can really probably use any oil. BMW recommends their long life synthetic 5/30, some use M1 0w40, or GC 0w30. Note that bmw 5/30 usually tests out quite a bit thicker than an off the shelf synthetic 5/30.
In my 6/00 prod car, i generally use bmw 5/30. TWS is great oil, but on the track, my oil temps climb up to 250-260 with the thicker oil, and the car eventually over heats. With bmw 5-30, it generally runs 15-20 F cooler, and i can get several more laps on a warm day before having to back off due to temps.

gtx510 08-10-2006, 11:59 PM wierd. maybe the TWS is lacking in the anti-friction additive dept?
I think there's a VOA of it on BITOG?
Have you ever tried mixing TWS and GC or BMW 5W30?
Any increased oil consumption with the 5W30?
LL-01 oils are all about a low 40wt and have HTHS's over 3.5?

What is weird, the temps? That is just typical of thicker oil, they retain heat more than a thinner, or perhaps a thinner oil is more efficiently cooled in the M5's oil/coolant heat exchanger. From an UOA wear standpoint, TWS is outstanding, in my experience, so i do not think there is any lack of anti friction additive.
No i have not mixed, just never seemed like a necessary thing to do.
Yes, oil consumption is higher with the thinner oils, vs TWS. Each car is different, my M5 will use a quart of 5w30, or 0w40 or GC every 1500-2k miles depending on how hard i push it. With TWS , it uses a liter ever 3500 or so miles. There are guys on the M5 board who report oil consumption as high as a liter every few hundred miles!

gtx510 08-11-2006, 12:57 AM Are you sure? thicker oil = more heat?
I could see a little bit from the increased drag but enough to raise the temps 15-20F?
1L/300miles!!! No that's a loose/race engine.
Do you guys ever have problems with combustion chamber deposits from oil burning?
