View Full Version : How to install a 7" lcd in centerconsole w/pics
schnitzed328 06-19-2003, 10:33 PM hello fellow bimmer owners
here is a step by step on how to install a 7" screen in centerconsole.....on the stealth side....
1) u have to pretty much remove the whole lower portion of ur dash both sides and also ur glove box should be about 12 screws....and one 10mm bolt that is behind the glove box light once that is done
2)go to the pocket that is under ur obc.... on the inside u will see a hole that is on the top of the pocket..... stick ur finger inside and push on the back of the obc it should pop right out if not u just need a lil jewelers flat head to pry the sides a bit....disconnect obc
3)now for the pocket just pull up in the pocket and it will come out abit..... just unplug ur switches if u have any......
4)now to remove PRND321 plate just stick ur fingers under the plate and push up....(as for stick shift i dont know).... now ur can reach ur window switches and hazzard...... one those r unplugged
5)with a stubby philips head screw driver remove the two screws that r on top of the center conlsole surround ...pic1.... there is a third screw on the right hand side about 2 inches over in the middle of the right... pic2
schnitzed328 06-19-2003, 10:57 PM 6)now to remove the console that holds the cup holder and arm rest..(the arm rest does not get removed) remove rear ash try holder by removing the tray out u will see 2 plactic philips screws..then pull the whole rear ashtray out.... pic3.... now ur goin to remove the trim that is around the ashtry that is connected to the arm rest....pic4 .... and the trim peice that is in front of it.... sorry no pic......now there is a screw in the rear of where the ash tray used to be....pic5
schnitzed328 06-19-2003, 11:09 PM 7) now all u have to do is pull up on the e-brake boot to separate from the console once that is done pull up on the rear of console up threw the arm rest and now tilt and push forward to get the console out of e-brake handle......
8)once that console is out u will see a black plactic 10mm nut that holds the main centerconsole remove that nut....pic6.....now with all the switches out and shift plate loose, shift car in low gear in auto and i guess in a stick just remove shift knob.......slide center console out
schnitzed328 06-19-2003, 11:16 PM 7)now u need to go to home depot and buy a piece of lexan about 8" x 10" make sure it has the plastic protective cover on both sides.. $1.98.
8) with a dremel tool and the cutting wheel attachment ur goin to cut the pocket out for the obc and have only the part where the switches go in ...see pic
schnitzed328 06-19-2003, 11:26 PM 9) now place the switch peice that u cut and place it back on the center console .... see pic8.... now ur goin to measure the opening
10) take those measurements and cut out lexan to spec..... pic9 and 10
schnitzed328 06-19-2003, 11:30 PM 11)now that the lexan is cut to spec and filed off the ruff edges now it should fit like this .....
schnitzed328 06-19-2003, 11:34 PM here is a pic of the screen im using its a fareinheit 7001hr widescreen module..
tommorrow i will be mounting the screen and also spray painting a boarder for the screen..... till next time
Daved 06-20-2003, 12:17 AM Very good write-up! Keep us updated.
Preppy 06-20-2003, 01:18 AM Cool. I want to do something like this later on after I get my sub system setup. Nice work man.
Thanks for taking your time out to do the write up too!
Thanks for the writeup. Just one Q...Why did you remove the armrest assembly if all you wanted to do was install in the center console? Or is there more to this install?
Oh and BTW, where in NJ are you? We should've done this mod together!
Thanks,
Justin
schnitzed328 06-20-2003, 11:38 AM JuBu: i live in jersey city
u dont have to remove the armrest just u have to remove the console that holds the ashtray and cup holders and also i will be relocating the obc to where the cup holders were..
schnitzed328 06-20-2003, 11:49 AM now that the plexi is to spec it time t make a boarder for the screen..... i took apart the housing for the screen and then center it to the plexi..... pic..... once centered trace the inside of the screen....after its bein traced take a sharp knife or razor and cut out the trace peel off the outer plactic cover leaving the center platic cover....pic
schnitzed328 06-20-2003, 11:57 AM now its time to paint plexi... go to home depot or ur local autozone or pep boys and buy black semi gloss paint..... take some glass cleaner and clean plexi now paint plexi and let dry.....pic........after plexi is dry now is time to peel of the center plastic cover on plexi and now u have a black boarder for ur screen....... later on i will be mounting the screen to plexi and mounting it to the center console....... too many mods i dont know what to do
schnitzed328 06-20-2003, 12:53 PM now its time to mount plexi to console but first i mounted the lcd front trimring to plexi ..... pic....... next i remove the front protective cover from screen ..... ..... next is to mount screen to center console....pic..... all u have to do is get some plastic cement or u might use heavy duty glue sticks let sit
schnitzed328 06-20-2003, 01:27 PM now just mount screen to trim ring..... there we go a 7" screen in center console..... here r some pics with the screen on..... the next installment will be relocating the OBC to the cup holder..... till next time
Am I on crack or is it just too late? Sorry if this is a dumb Q but I'm confused by the pics...particularly #11 and the last couple of pics.
Is it just me or does #11 look a LOT BIGGER than the final pictures? #11 shows the whole OBC/SUNGLASS TRAY area being used while the final pictures look like the area was cut in half and only like the sunglass tray was used. Are those pics smushed or am I retarted or....I dunno.....I'm tired and confused.

Chris, that's what I figured, but the background didn't look smushed so that threw me off. Thanks.

Daved 06-25-2003, 01:10 AM Are you using the LCD only with the DVD player in your glovebox?
IMAGE&STYLE 06-25-2003, 02:37 AM That is a very clean setup! More pics of it installed please!
bmw325iman 06-25-2003, 03:33 AM Don't feel bad, the same happened to me. I thought it was a "bait and switch"!! lol It went from about 7" to about 2 1/2" tall (screen).
Daved 06-25-2003, 11:37 AM I fixed the pic for your eyes
schnitzed328 06-25-2003, 11:56 PM i just took the dremel tool (just got love that thing) and cut out for the OBC..... i also extend the wires......if all goes well..... i will be putting a push button start where the lighter socket used to be...... then putting every thing together.....
yes i have one DVD running all 4 screens thats in the glove box but will either have the ps2 or the xbox running and a rearview camera..... and i will be getting screens in the rear maybe head rests or maybe go crazy and get a 15" flipdown.... i also have a 4input 3 output A/V switcher that i have but to lazy to put in right now....
Daved 06-26-2003, 01:54 AM You gotta fill up the spaces around the OBC and it will look nice!
schnitzed328 06-26-2003, 09:06 PM i went to local electrical supply store and bought a momentary switch to be locates where the old lighter socket was.... i got lucky the switch fit right in and no use of dremel this time
schnitzed328 06-26-2003, 09:08 PM took me a few hours to get everything back to place man its hot out there..... thanks to all of ur kind words and i hope i helped out
schnitzed328 06-26-2003, 09:10 PM my other mods i did a few weeks ago.... what is next for me i guess its either the rear tv's or a new interior scheme
