View Full Version : GOD DAMN IT I HATE SAP! how do you remove it?
joe325i 06-17-2003, 06:27 PM so i was outside... using almost a whole bottle of sap and tar remover on my car.. because the pine trees in my driveway decided to rain sap while my car was immobile for a week..
and today was the first time i drove it and its littered with sap!
so i used the sap remover and my ice scrapper to get the sap off
and its STILL covered in it!
how do i remove that stuff!
its ancored onto my car
and dont tell me that you should have cleaned it off right away crap
my car was immobile for 1-2 weeks
Michael Camp 06-17-2003, 07:21 PM Claybar will do it.
MgnFicnT 06-17-2003, 07:56 PM Take it to a hand wash and let them take car of it
joe325i 06-17-2003, 08:13 PM im not shell in out the money for something i can do my self :P
ill give the clay bar a shot
hal9000 06-17-2003, 09:10 PM How protected was the car. Sometimes if there's a decent coat of wax/sealant on the car, as the sap dries, it can be "chipped" off. If it's directly on the clearcoat, try WD-40. Don't let it soak too long otherwise it may discolor paint.
Lets see....about now Ben will chime in with the car cover idea....:evil2
Actually Sap just sucks. After it dries, it becomes resin....yep that's right, the same type of stuff they use in fiberglass/carbon fiber formulation. Bad thing is most stuff that'll liquify resin also strips paint...
joe325i 06-17-2003, 09:13 PM yeah i know...
i have some on my interior :(
Ben Carufel 06-17-2003, 09:24 PM I'd recommend getting a car cover...:D
But seriously, use your fingernail to get as much off as possible, then use QD and/or WD-40 to get it all off, then clean the paint as soon as possible (dawn wash!), then re-wax.
I hate sap, too. I wouldn't let an ice scraper anywhere near my car, though.
joe325i 06-17-2003, 09:26 PM well
after having a stealth pine needle go half way under my thumbs finger nail.. screaming swearing and bleeding all over my driveway.. i had it and took out the ice scrapper
my finger still hurts
Ben Carufel 06-17-2003, 09:28 PM And your paint is still screaming from being abused by the ice scraper ;)...
The only plastic I use to carefully scrape, when absolutely necessary, is the corner of a credit card.
joe325i 06-17-2003, 09:29 PM didnt scratch it.. dont see how ice scrapper is diffrent from my finger nail if neither scratched it
Ben Carufel 06-17-2003, 09:32 PM Microscratches, my friend, microscratches.
Look at where you scraped the sap off next time it's sunny. Look at odd angles to the sun. You will probably see small swirls/microscratches...
You have much, much more control of your fingernail than of a foreign object.
bmw325iman 06-18-2003, 12:21 AM Ammonia has always worked well for me. Never had it damage the paint/wax/clearcoat, etc. It cuts right through the sap.
SilverBeam 06-18-2003, 03:46 AM One more vote for claybar.
Good suggestions so far, sap is quite a bitch
One that has not been mentioned is 3M general adhesive cleaner
Clay + that or WD40 should get it off.
joe325i 06-18-2003, 06:29 PM well!
if a girl said clay bar!
ill claybar!

Paint cleaners aren't going to touch large areas of sap. Small dots, maybe, but anything that's about half the size of a penny (which pine sap will be), is going to need something else, especially if it's had a chance to dry and harden.
BAVARIAN323i 06-24-2003, 05:23 PM go to any auto store and get sap/tar remover...;)
