View Full Version : Looking for places to get wheels
Koizumi 08-25-2008, 09:23 PM I'm looking for some new wheels for my ride. I know I've asked before, but perhaps there are some leads or suggestions that are new.
I'd love a set of 18" MK Motorsports, but we all know that it's easier to find an elephant who speaks Tagalog, French & ancient Aramaic.
Next step would be ACS in staggered 18". I'm open to suggestions, too (no chrome).
I'd get used wheels if they're true and in mint condition.
Cheers
Auraraptor 08-25-2008, 09:56 PM ACS in our filament is getting harder to find. I am still looking for my final 19inch wheel. I will probably buy new. Autotalent.com is where I got the last two for the 7. Tell them Omar with the Schnitzers recommended them to you.
PS remember the E46 trick
1chiban 08-25-2008, 10:05 PM David, if you're intent send me a PM. I have an incredible wheel guy, hope I can help.
Cheers bro,
Thomas

I am pretty sure the E24 community would kill for those wheels! I would post them on bigcoupe.com (http://bigcoupe.com)
Wuffer 08-26-2008, 01:05 AM Thanks for the suggestion and if you have any friends over there feel free to send them my way. Otherwise I would rather see them in the hands of an E31 owner as that is what the are made for and came from. They do need refinishing but come with nearly new Z rated tires if wanted.
Dont remember the offset but pretty sure they are 8.5" wide Front and 10.1" wide rear. Will post them over on RF if no serious interest here.
carspainc.com 08-26-2008, 01:08 AM wuffer did you mention how much you would let them go for?
i think i would like to see them on my car
Wuffer 08-26-2008, 01:25 AM Open to serious offers....

I bet those are the classic 8.5/10x17 set with 12mm and 28mm offset. Won't fit the E24 unfortunately.

Koizumi 08-27-2008, 10:39 PM I've been super busy the past couple of days... And now I got a cold :(
I really appreciate the input! I'm looking for a set of 18" wheels. I'd really like MK-I Motorsport, ACS or Alpinas. I love the 17" Alpinas, but again, they're 17" (ARGH!!! I'd buy 'em in a second!).
Is it possible to restore ACS Type II wheels that are not chrome? Will the process remove the ACS engraving on the outside? I'm inept when it comes to refurbishing wheels as I've only ever bought new ones... And you guys know that I would refurbish them to look like new á la Koizumi-style :D http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1055389

If you want to buy new wheels I don't really understand where the problem is. All you need is a serious amount of money :stickoutt
The refurbishment process on the ACS will get rid of the ACS logo on the spoke. It is not engraved as on the center cap but just printed. I once did a set and had the logo printed on a thin foil which I put on the spoke before I applied the clear coat. Worked quite wll but all the extra work involved in it I never got paid for. And it won't work with powder coating due to the heat during the process.
When you refurbish wheels you indeed take the risk that they do not look like new afterwards but a lot better. :stickoutt In case of BBS 3-piece RS wheels for example you would need to buy cheap shitty screws which are not chrome but just zinc coated. Same with the above mentoined SCHMIDT Revolution wheels: originally not powder coated and screws chrome plated but not same quality as the ones I'm using.
But in general a professional refurbishment can turn an old rim into a like new one. BTW, it's quite often the only choice you have if you want to go for rims which are not in production anymore like the classic BBS RS rims.
Cheers

Koizumi 08-28-2008, 01:20 PM Wolf, as usual, I really appreciate your advice/info regarding wheel refurbishment.

Keep the Chrome wheels you have! Your car really looks nice!
The 8 series was made before it time! We are in a 17 - 20 inch society! The 8 looks modern with larger, wider, lower profile wheel (chrome)!
Most new cars have a least 17" lower profile tires!
Your car looks very nice! Stick the BMW emblem (blue) on the current wheels!
whale 08-28-2008, 11:44 PM I removed OZ 18" 9&10 wide 18# rims from my 840 to have them refurbished. Bought new cheaper ones in the meantime. I've got the now unblemished OZ's on standby for when I want to show the car. I would be willing to part with them to keep the inventory down with or without the used 80% tred Michelin Pilot Sport "Z" rated 245x40 & 275x35 tires. The rims and tires were expensive on Tire Rack but I think $2100 is a fair price for the package. Similar new rim & tire package would run you over $5K. Your shipping cost from Salt Lake City might be a deal breaker though.
