Posting on behalf of D. Tackett:

This is your reminder that online registration will open at 12:01 am this Saturday, August 23rd. That’s late Friday night for many of us.

Click on SD-Chapter Motorsport Registration (http://sdbmwcca.motorsportreg.com) to reserve your spot in advance.

Due to an increase in the lot rental fee starting July 1st, the entry fee has changed to $60. Breakfast items, cold beverages, and lunch are still included for all participants. We’ll hold 10 openings for the first non-BMWs out of a total registration of 100 drivers.

Another reminder: when you register online, you STILL need to show up before 7:30 to claim your spot. We have plenty of people who arrive on the event day hoping to get in, and to maximize driver openings, we may offer them your spot if you’re a no-show at 7:30. Late arrivals swamp our Tech and Registration volunteers all at the same time and hold up our 8:30 Driver’s Meeting, so please help us out and arrive by 7:30. Getting 1100 runs in (100 drivers X 11 runs) is hard to do unless we all work together to achieve it.

See you at Qualcomm!

San Diego chapter autocrosses are most DEFINITELY worth the drive!! My first auto-x was for LA chapter @Irwindale Speedway but they were few and far between throughout the year. Then I found out about SD chapter auto-x and saw their calendar. 6 in the whole year?? :) That was way more than LA. So I drove down for my first one 6yrs ago, and was hooked.

Besides I love going down to Sandy Eggo...like a mini-vacation, and you can't beat 1.25 mile autocrosses courses! That's longer than some actual road courses/race tracks.

And the price point (at least in the past) couldn't be beat ($45/11 runs w/lunch). And possibly a trophy? And remember this happens only bi-monthly. But then again....it's the junkies who think it's worth while.

Welcome to AA (Autocross-holics Anonymous)

I'll be there for support this time, but don't think I'm running. I've beaten the POS pretty bad at the last few and while DD'ing it now. Hell, I may take the day to actually work on it some in the 'pits'. Since after all, what would a SD AutoX be without me fixing the e21? :stickoutt

(Think Cork Screw @ Laguna Seca, or at least as best as I can do on Qualcomm!)

The reality is, the "cork screw" at LS is really a down-hill "S" turn. A "true" corkscrew would be all turns in the same direction going down hill and around. Kind of like circling a "mountain" from top to bottom along the sides.

But I am curious what Dr. Franken-Kogan will cookup at Qualcomm. Speaking of Qualcomm...so when are the Chargers packing to move up to LA??? LOL

Looking forward to it. In the meantime, I'm watching NASCAR....at Fontana! Just think, LA chapter will have their Driving School and Car Control Clinic in less than a month there! Up on the banking, drafting the C and D students :)

Is there also a club-race with LA Matt?

325racer
08-31-2008, 10:09 PM
Not this time around. I think most of the racers are BROKE right now! Plus there is a Sears Point Race the weekend before. I'm going to be racing in Mexico the weekend before the school instead of Sears. It's MUCH closer and CHEEPER, well, at least before you factor in entertainment costs for the evening.

I'm getting excited for this :D

So the usual layout is one large (how long?) track? I happened to be at Qualcomm one day when the Porsche club was out there and they had 3-4 small circuits set up...
I'm just tryin to get an idea of what to expect. Also is there going to be any way to inflate/check tire pressures there, or should this all be done before?

It'll be a long and fun track. You should set up your car before coming, unless you're bringing your own gauges and tools.

That PCA event was a school type event. For that they break down to 3-4 small segments to work on certain things.

This will be 1 LONG course, about 1.1 miles, give or take a little.

Unlike PCA, we don't have a compressor in the trailer, so you gotta do that on your own. Back in the day I used to use a good ol bike floor pump and a bar type gauge. Maybe I should go back to the Bike pump for the Cardio workout!!!!!!!!

1.1 miles :eyecrazy that sounds awesome, good thing the parking lot is friggin huge.

And good to know, I'll make sure to inflate them beforehand.

To participate? No. You must be a valid member of BMWCCA.

randywalters

.... I'll make sure to inflate them beforehand. You should bring an air compressor and a gauge. You'll probably need to adjust your tire pressures throughout the day and may find that you need to add air, and after your first practice session your morning air pressures will drop while the car sits in the pits so you'll have to add air again before you go out on your 2nd practice session. The correct tire pressures are pretty important for autocross, moreso if you want to go fast :)

I can't believe the GF planned our vacation to start on the same day as the SD event, and end on the same day as the LA event. I'll be on an airplane during both events! :mad

Incidentally the LA chapter has ONLY 30 people pre-reg so far! 70 is a break-even number financially, so it's not looking good. A financial hit for the chapter is numbers don't bump up. But also the events are too close to each other (LA, SD).

haha... done plenty to it, but what counted was just the basic stuff, Ground Control coilovers, Eibach sway bars, motor's got the 3.5", Dinan intake, and a chip, and that's the old-school UUC System U (single muffler). Fun little car. :devillook

Thanks for the compliments on the paint. Unfortunatly they put to much metalic when they mixed it. We are trying to get the paint vendor to pay for the respray.

I am mixed if I like it or not. The problem is they ran out of paint when the had to fix the hood. They ordered more from the vendor and the 2nd batch was mixed was correct. The hood does not match correctly.

I paid $2K for the re-spray including materials. If I told you who did it you would not believe me.

I dunno what I got more of, fun or brain-busting laps! Rockin the lobster look, forgot (as usual) to put on sunscreen... looks like the farmer's tan's back for good!

Great course, very technical, and 1.3 miles in length :buttrock Times were right around 100-105 seconds for the quick cars, and a really hot E46 M3 smoked the rest of us with a 98.5 or something :eyecrazy

Great time out there... anybody get a picture of my car, co-driven by my girlfriend? Black E36 M3 on silver 6-spoke Kosei K1's, Sparco race seats and no backseat, #98 & 100 on the sides

haha... done plenty to it, but what counted was just the basic stuff, Ground Control coilovers, Eibach sway bars, motor's got the 3.5", Dinan intake, and a chip, and that's the old-school UUC System U (single muffler). Fun little car. :devillook

Technic looked really clean man, congrats on keeping a rare car original and in great shape.

Thanks:D I might have to consider picking up one of those System Us one day, any idea how they sound on an m50?

I'm doing the course Design!!!!!!!!!!!

MMWAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA!!!!

Sweet course. Lots of fun. Next time how about some 3rd gear sweepers???

I had awful times except for my dnf run. I was told it would have been 102 something. I would have been very pleased with that, since my practices were in the 105-106 range. Not sure why it is a dnf if you go out of the cones after the finish though. I thought backing up into the beams to get back on course would be a bad idea either way.

Because of the possible damage to the expensive timing equipment, nevermind the close proximity to the trailer/workers, going thru the finish out of control is highly discouraged, to the tune of a dnf.

No argument there. It's also very embarrassing!

There were quite a few 3rd gear sweapers if you have a 3.91 rear diff. Actually most of the course was 3rd, except a couple of the tighter corners.

sounds like an instance where the diff puts you at a disadvantage...

no idea... it's a little excessive for me just cruising around, but when it's nice and hot, it really does sound amazing

Went through all of the pictures really quickly. I don't think you were driving when I was taking pictures. Should have let me known ahead of time, and I could have taken more pictures for you, haha.

I didn't discriminate. It was probably just a matter of timing.

One thing I noticed was that the folks with the older cars seemed to look like they were trying harder, so sometimes had more interesting spinouts.

Great pics!
#44 (at full size) shows the grin on the instructor's face. Rick was a great instructor and he seems to get a kick out of doing it!
