View Full Version : My sunroof question for the day

Sunroof has been acting really (%$#!) strange the past week. Replaced all the replaceable bits in the cartridge and the sunroof would be between the vent position and fully closed-wouldn't open. A couple of days later it suddenly decided to open when I tried it again. Now it opens and closes but won't go to the vent position. I've tried several different version of the reset procedures, heard the "clicks", but it's got me a bit baffled.
A couple of current notes:
1) The roof doesn't labor at all while it moves back and forth with the sliding panel.
2) I can't manually raise the sunroof-I can put an allen wrench in and move it back and forth-but once it closes fully it won't move anymore.

I don't want the problem to be mechanical, mostly because I can't get the roof off w/o it going into the tilt position, but also because I'm just getting tired of the whole thing. Up til now I've had enough little projects to keep me busy, but I just want to get the headliner back in and finish her up for the Wrenchfest on the 30th-

Use your key to reset the computer. Unlock and every window and the sunroof should open. Lock and all will close up. Then unlock car, put key in ignition and use tilt position. After it tilts hold for 10 to 15 seconds. Next use the switch and take it all the way back. Hold for 10 to 15 seconds. Next use the switch and close all the way. Hold for 10 to 15 seconds. That should be it. Hope it works. If not disconnect the battery at the ground on the driverside. Ground is located by the drivers side tail light. Leave for an hour or so. Should reset everything. Start again. The sunroof is a real piece of art. Good luck. Carter

Use your key to reset the computer (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1065554#).

Did not make it clear enough. Just hold the key in the lock position and hold untill all the windows are up. Or unlock for them to go down. Hope this helps. Carter

Well, it may have helped-
I think the problem may have partly mechanical. I couldn't raise the roof to the tilt position either manually or with the motor, so after doing your reset procedure I did both simultaneously and it popped open. Now it (knock on wood) works in all directions/positions.

Have your Headliner replaced. They will remove and re-align to refit the new Headliner. Auto Upholster shops are more proficient at removing the Sunroof parts.

My sunroof was not working properly! I had the Headliner replaced (It need to be replaced anyway)! They fixed the problem. Unlesss it totally broke (motor not working) they will have to remove portions to secure the Liner

Headliner has actually been sitting in my garage for a few months waiting to go back in-
You must have very different upholstery shops in TX - have heard nothing but horror stories (it's all relative I realize) about what shops have done to our SR mechanisms...

Yeah... probably depends on the upholstery shop. Had my headliner reupholstered recently, and my sunroof action is as RockyTT describes ATM. It was fine before bringing it to them. So I woudn't neccessarily reccommend that...
