View Full Version : Can anyone figure out what is wrong with my car?
BLUIZE256 08-17-2008, 06:16 PM Ok, so my E36 is over heating... what a suprise, worst cooling system's ever made.
Anyway, i changed the waterpump, thermostat, secondairy thermostat (the one that connects to the air box), changed all hoses, and flushed the radiator. the car has full fluid and my fan seems to be working fine...
Any ideas? I need this thing back on the road ASAP.

There is a bleeder screw on the radiator. Good DIY FAQ here.

E36's don't like to bleed fully, and this leads to many of them overheating after cooling system work.
BLUIZE256 08-18-2008, 01:38 AM head gasket? wild guess
not the head gasket because there is no smoke from the exhaust and if it were the head gasket then anti-freeze would be getting into the injectors and smoking would occur. .

BMW recommended. .
did you bleed it?
a couple times.. i'm going to give it another go tomorrow
bmw440 08-18-2008, 08:05 AM Did your car over heat first and then u changed parts,or just changed parts to keep up maintenance.because if u didnt have a overheat problem until u changed parts, bleed the system, sometimes it takes awhile, also turn on the heat in your car when bleeding the system.

nope, the car started to overheat and once i saw it go past the half way point i shut it down because my car normally sits right below the half way point... so then i started changing parts and one led to another and before i knew it everything was changed.. and i always turn the heat on to help it bleed...
but i only got the car a couple months back and i hate buying used cars because apparently the previous owner didnt take to much care of the engine even though the car came with alot of mainteneance records, I'm pretty sure they were all B.S. at this point with all the problems i've had. .

Thats not always the case. The gasket can fail in a way where it allows combustion gasses into the cooling system causing air pockets that cause overheating.
Let me know if you want us to check it out. We can perform a few test to confirm whether its the gasket or not.
bmw440 08-18-2008, 05:25 PM I have one in the shop right now with a overheating problem.and it is the head gasket, with no coolant going into the cylinders.
