From the ETK CD I determined that cars with a later then 08/02 build have the option of installing an Aux-In adapter.

The part numbers are:
Cars without NAV = 65 12 0 153 501
Cars With NAV = 65 12 0 153 503

Has anyone done this retrofit? Seems very easy...

I'll check out the part next week... looks easy enough.

Where would you bury the input? Under the dash?

What about for 08/02 and earlier w/no NAV??? I need to connect my IPOD!!! :95

I do not believe there is a retrofit kit. My suggestion would be to use a Blitzsafe or other RCA input adapter into the CD changer port.

Is this what pre 09-02 M3 owners need to attach IPOD's to their cars???

That seems to be the correct as long as your stereo does not have DSP.

Thanks for the advice.

Isn't DSP the different sound features such as concert, theater, hall, etc., etc. I have an 02 E46. I don't have DSP, right?

I am not sure if you have DSP or not. I would check your Radio manual or possibly call your dealer with the last 7 numbers of your VIN and they will be able to tell you for certain. Also, If you go this route, don't skimp on the quality of the RCA cables that you run into the trunk. It will make a difference in the amount of noise they pick up on their way to the trunk.

Another suggestion would be to buy a new head unit (post 09/02) and get the Aux-Input kit. I have that Part# also if you need it.

I am interested in the best quality. Therefore, which would supply that... a new head unit, or this blitzsafe connection?

Will replacing the head unit be more expensive if the quality is the same as blitsafe?

I know, alot of questions, but you seem to have alot of answers, so thanks.

By far the best possible sound will be from a new headunit. Exactly what build date is your car? MM/YY. I'll look up the Part#'s so you can call your local dealer and ask how much damage your bank account it will be.

Do you have NAV? HK? CD or tape? What other Options?

CD only with HK upgrade.

Actually upon closer inspection I cannot determine a difference between 09/01 build to current build Business CD units. Therefore, I almost want to conclude that there is no difference and that the Aux-In adapter may very well work.

Cars With NAV = 65 12 0 153 503

Currently not available in the United States. My contact at the dealership is going to talk to people in Germany to see if he can get it.

No 3 series has DSP - not even with HK. It is an option on 5 series, and standard on the 7's.
