We are thinking of buying an X5. Our garage is very low - consistently about 71 in. at the opening. The spec on the X5 says it is 69 in. tall. Is this with or without a rack? Is this a reliable height? 2 in. is not much room to spare especially living in Chicago and having to deal with snow/ice buildup.

You should fit. I was in the same boat, I only had 1.5-2" to spare in height when my garage door was open. The first time was nerve wracking but it fits. Spec is with a rack, which is removable. If you remove you need to buy a sealing kit from BMW.

IslandS62: what is this 'sealing kit' you speak of? I removed my rack and purchased some hole plugs (painted them and sealed them). I just wanna take a look at the kit BMW has to compare it to what I did....... I wish I would have known about it; it was hell getting the right fit with the hole plugs.....

They are round plugs apparently. I have not bought the kit but some guys were talking about it over on X5World.com

Probably whatever you have is just as good.

Thanks for the replies. During the test drive we drove it to my garage for a test. I had about a 1/4 inch of clearance. The fixed antanea was the high point - not the rails as I thought would be.

After a bit of mods to the weather stripping and trimboards on the garage I now have 1+ in. of clearance and am good to go!
