My wife has a 2005 X5. It has a vibration at about 60 to 70mph. You can feel it in the wheel shaking. And sometimes when you break. The dealer said it was the tires which were a cheap chinese tire. Tires were about half worn out so we got a new set of Hankook ventus st tires. Read a lot of reviews and all were great about this tire. Had them put on and vibration is still there. Not as bad as it was.

Took it back to the dealer and the first thing they said, "oh it's the tires"

This is a brand new set of tires. Is the dealer full of it? What else could it be. They claim to have looked over all the steering components and brakes and rotors and all the can come up with is the tires.

The tires are already showing signs of uneven wear from this. The tires have been rebalanced again and still there.

Thanks in Advance

How many miles are on the X5 and how many miles on the tires? What size tires are they?

You are still under warranty so if they could have just claimed it - if it were a suspension component and fix it - they would have.

Ventus tires are not really a matched tire for a BMW, they are more for asian cars that is why they cost so much less. So these will be side affects of your choice, you get what you paid for.

Even with Michelein tires there will be a little vibration under braking or accleration depending on pavement conditions with a performance car or SAV, but put less than the OEM tire under it, those vibrations will be more pronounced.

Large, low-profile, slightly out-of-round tires are the cause of many hours of unnecessary vibration diagnosis. It's pretty common. Especially when I read you write that the vibration was "not as bad as it was" before the tires were replaced. The tires changed, the vibration changed. Anybody seen a duck?

X5 has 70K miles. Tires have 10K. But vibration was there from day one even with the new tires. Even had them re balanced right away. As mentioned, was not as bad but still there.

The hankook ventus st are 275/45/20. Factory 20 inch wheels. Car had some wanli, cheap tires, looked like a toyo proxes knock off.

So car is out of warranty now but the dealer looked at it a couple times while under warranty. I gave the dealer the benefit of the doubt since they were cheap tires when they said it was the tires. I just find it hard to beleive that it is doing it still with a brand new set of new tires and different brand and different tread. The hankook were not cheap, about mid price as compared to a michelin etc...but were not the cheapest out there.

I read a lot of positive reviews about the tire and they were made for SUV's. Even some reviews on BMW X5's saying a great tire.

I had read that there were some vibration issues with the 04 and 05 X5 so was thinking there is some sort of issue with them and something more for the dealer to look at or check.

Thanks

You haven't mentioned whether or not the wheels have been checked. And you can't just look at them and go "Yep! They're perfectly round!!" You have to spin 'em and watch the inside edge of the rim to see if there's any bit of hop (out-of-round) to them. I would think the dealer might have mentioned if they were out-of-round when the were balanced (since it's easy to notice when it's spinning on the balancer), but you never know, the advisor may have just told the tech to do a balance (without mentioning that there was a vibraiton problem and to look for problems) and so the tech didn't pay much attention to there being any out-of-roundness to the wheel.

There's only a few things that can cause a rotational vibration: tires, wheels, brakes, bearings and sometimes suspension. If the suspension, brakes and bearings are ok, that leaves only wheels and tires.

I would say depending on the severity of the vibration that it could be related to the front wheel drive system. I know sometimes I can feel a slight vibration thru the steering wheel. If yours is more pronounced, you might take a look at the joints and boots. Just an idea.

hankooks are crap, just like khumos, wanli's and other discount crap tires.

get michelins and forget about issues.

if it shimmies down the road then its either a bad tire, bad rim, or control arm bushings.

if it shimmies when you tag the brakes, its either rotors, or control arm bushings.

did this problem ever get resolved?

weve had two e53's come in within two days for steering vibration issues when braking. replaced castor bushes (control arm bushes) and the vibration decreased by about 90%, replaced both front rotors and the vibration was gone.

sound about right?

EDIT: i noticed the OP has only had 2 posts....dammit, probably wont reply then

your complaint is braking, OP was when driving.

two different issues.
one is tires (OP)
yours is bushings/balljoints/tierod ends/rotor/brake issues.
