View Full Version : Where to get wheels refinished around here?
nhm3bimmer 08-07-2008, 09:43 PM I continue to try and fix/modify my car with almost no money. The other day I was able to trade my ugly 3-series wheels for some M-68 wheels. Aside from being filthty there is no curbing that I can tell. The problem is that the finish is flacking and cracking, in some places chunks missing where its flaked off. Anyone know where to get wheels refinished and how much I could excpect to pay?
On a side note Iam looking for a used secondary air pump so that I can get my CEL out finally. If anyone has a lead on a good used one I'd appreciate the heads up.
Thanks all
-Joe
Mossman11 08-08-2008, 04:43 AM i have a buddy that powdercoats and a good used secondary air pump from a 98 m3. If you dont mind the drive you could knock them both off in one trip. Do you have a spare set of wheels to roll on while you're getting this new set refinished? Not exactly a do it while you wait type of thing, its labor intensive, but if you got the tires dismounted I'm sure he could get them cleaned up, any curb rash filled, sandblasted and powdercoated your choice of colors in a few days

sandpaper, filler primer, paint, clearcoat, buffing compound.

BobMurphy 08-08-2008, 11:05 AM I did my Style 42's. It is a very satisfying experience. The preparation is the key. If you are painting and clear coating it is much easier than stripping down to bare metal and polishing as you only need to prepare the surface. You need to spend the extra few $$ for a high quality wheel paint like Wurth.
1.) sand with 600 grit dry
2.) sand with 800 grit dry then wet
3.) clean thoroughly and do not handle any surfaces that you will be painting to avoid finger oils contamination
4.) place wheels on a lazy susan and spin slowly while painting. This helps significantly to keep the paint level using spray cans. Several thin coats are better than one heavy coat.
5.) same with clear coat
6.) let cure for 3 days. place in the sun during the day.
7.) wax or Rejex in 90 days
If all that doesn't work out well, then spend the money for a professional. However, I'm no pro and mine came out nice. Just spend the time to do it right. Good luck.

How much for the air pump?
I didnt think about having another set to roll on while those are being worked on, looks like I need to solve this problem before I tackle the refininshing.
Thanks for all the ideas and the step by step DIY.
Mossman11 08-08-2008, 12:33 PM If you drive down here you can have the pump for 30 bones and I can show you a few samples of my buddy's powdercoating
nhm3bimmer 08-08-2008, 01:17 PM 30 bucks, DONE!! (It was working when you pulled it right?) Lets set up a time so I can meet up with you get that pump and see some samples, good idea

Another vote for RimPro.
NHskibm 08-12-2008, 12:55 PM Make sure if you take your wheels to rimpro you take all 4. They don't color match very well.
Also with the M68's you'll likely need to roll your fenders.. I had M68's on my 99 328is and I had to roll the rears...
mikeyb74 08-12-2008, 02:42 PM I would use both the Wurth wheel paint and clear if you want to save money. You know who to see about buying it from.

Joe has the front offset all around so the tires aren't staggered like yours were, he probably won't have to roll the fenders.
come out front and talk to me when you get a chance Joe, we have some less expensive options from what rimpro will cost you if you want to look into them and since you work for us, you'll get a deal (subject to interpretation..lol) on em.
