The red "brake" light on my dash came on the other day. My obc states to check the brake linings. Has anyone run into this problem and if so does it require taking the car to the shop or is it a diy?

It requires you to replace your brake linings. Also known as brake pads. Find out if it's front or rear and whther or not you need to replace the rotors (by measuring their thickness), then search "DIY brakes X5" to find out if you're capable and then decide whether you want to tackle it or take it somewhere to have it done.
