so i finally had my car that i was paying my dad back for, using him merely as a bank and loan system, signed over to me yesterday. had to redo two inspections, obtain new plates and registrations and transfer the title, and of course redo all of the insurance plan (thankfully it's equally expensive! how? i dont know).

so of course within 10 minutes of leaving the registry i'm going 41mph in a 35mph zone on woodland road in stoneham, which the area itself is near malden/medford/melrose too. of course i get pulled over, god knows why. the officer asks me if i know why i was pulled over. of course i have some clue, which makes up probably 99% of the times cops pull anyone over. but i answer "no".

he asks how fast i thought i was going. i reply, "40, 41mph tops", also knowing that the spedometer on BMWS are allowed to read you're going 1MPH slower than you actually are, and 4MPH faster than you actually are. he claims to have clocked me at 50mph. so he writes up my ticket, and then hands it to me, after being a cold asshole and saying i shouldn't say good afternoon, because apparently 11:00AM is still the morning, and then just holding his hand out, without saying a word waiting for my license and registration.

anyways, i read the ticket, and it says 42mph in a 35 zone, but on the official line, he writes 45 in a 35 zone. then the box he ticked was "methods used: radar AND estimation". WTF! so of course I ask which method he used, and why he gave two different numbers different from the one he initially gave me, and he claimed he was giving me a "break". I then ask whether he estimated, or used a speed gun, because even the best of cops can't differentiate between 40 and 43, or 43 and 45mph. he answers, he used both. riiight.

all things considered, he was an asshole. had i been actually speeding and going 50mph+, i would have completely understood and taken the situation with way more humility.

as you can imagine, i'm most certainly not paying this and plan to challenge it, as there were plenty of cars around me he could have been aiming at, two of which were in the right lane going faster than me (passing in the right lane, and "speeding" faster than i, how is that legal, if i'm "breaking the law"), and the fact he contradicts himself three times with three different numbers, and then goes on to say he estimated. well sir, you can't "estimate" when your "estimation" and the speed limit and speed i was actually going were in such close proximity.

can't wait to see this sucker in court.

sorry for the rant.

but really the reason i wanted to post this is that i've realized there have been A LOT of troopers around the boston area and 10 miles outwards in every direction from the city, ESPECIALLY on tuesdays. so heads up! :shifty must be time for the state to make some money, god knows the tolls don't do that for us :lol

Damn, that really sucks. Hopefully you're able to beat the ticket without too much resistance. I'm pretty surprised you were tagged for 7 mph over the limit...I usually go by the rule that anything less than 10 mph over is ok unless it's really densely populated or in a school zone.

Best of luck and thanks for the heads up about the increased enforcement.

I hear ya man, it hasn't been fun in NH, either. I just put my front plate back on this week (:mad) because I'm tired of getting harassed for it when I see plenty of shitboxes around who only run one plate. I was just tired of getting pulled over once a week, especially when I wasn't speeding.

Sometimes you can go down to the state poilice baracks the same day and get it taken care of if you have a good reason.

Prepare for the usual "You were speeding so STFU" bullshit :rolleyes

At least all the cops were tied up this afternoon with an overturned van on the felsway exit (exit 33) off 93S. Looked like a pretty nasty accident.

lol to both of you

and i would have headed down the "local barracks", except i had to spend all day running errands for my only day off this week. I may go in their on my next day off and at least present the case while remaining calm, and at the very least obtain the serial number and model of the gun the officer signed out that day.

no calibration records for the speeding gun, means that the gun's reading was invalid, and since he estimated within only 2-3mph within the legal limit, there is no way i can get a ticket. also i've heard of cops providing different serial numbers and guns than they used at the actual scene. oh what the state will do for money!

Same old story, some one gets pulled over concludes the cops must be out in full force.

Sucks on the shitty situation, hopefully you can beat it.

not exactly, the same day, i later on saw troopers everywhere in places i had never seen them before. i even saw them in my small suburb, and let me be clear, i see cops more in the parking lot where i work than in the entirety of my town.

state troopers must have tuesdays marked as the boston area, or my area, because my friend was pulled over last tuesday for accelerating too quickly in boston.

coincidence? doubt it.

I got pulled over for doing 55 in a 55 on i95. I was acting "suspicious".

Exact quote from the statie jake: "Did you see me and decide to take it easy?"

the best thing when you get pull over and the the cop ask you "do you know how fast you are going?" is say "40mph" give the cop the exact speed. cant say stuff like "40, 41 tops" why? because if proves that you know what you are doing, and if the cop say "i got you at 50mph" ask the cop to show you the radar gun. if he fail to show you the radar gun then you can use that against him in court. get it? you can say you know exactly how fast you are going(proving you know what you ard doing and pay attention to the road and speed zone sign), but the cop says other wise, and when you ask the cop to show you the radar gun, he refuse. that basically prove the cop is giving you a hard time.

also when you get pull over and the cop ask you "do you know how fast you are going?" never say "No, I dont" or " I think 40mph, 41mph" stuff like that. why? if you are not sure and estimate your own speed then when you challenge to the court the court will go for what the cop say. why? if I remember correctly its because one of the common law, I think it simply says because the cop has training on estimating speeds and you dont, so the court will go have to with the cop. its my own experience. still piss about that one, because how would average citizens knows about that freaking law?! at least the judge is nice enough to tell me that, so now I know what should I say if cop ask me "do you know how fast you are going?"
so now even if I am going at 50mph in a 35mph zone I will still say 40mph and strongly stay with my statement and judgement untill the cop shows me the radar gun. and it did work out couple times. cop drove by me turns pulls me over and I use my method and he couldnt do anything about it. have to let me go. but if you shows you the radar gun then you are screw.
