I have 2008 X5, and pretty basic LG mobile phone with Bluetooth- nothing special. The two pair up via Bluetooth just fine. Problem I have is I have to re-pair the two pretty much every day "from scratch". Is this normal?

Using BT is all new to me, but I figured once it was paired, these two "devices" would always recognize each other. I don't konw if I am inadvertantly doing something to break the link or this is normal, to have to re-pair every day or so. The phone is always listed as a Previously Paired Device on the car screen, but the link doesn't establish itself. I have to delete the device from the car listing, then start all over from the phone with a new PIN to get a link going. Once its paired, it seems to work fine for a while, perhaps all day, even when I step out of the car and everything is shut off. I really haven't found the pattern for when it does and doesn't re-pair.

Thanks

No. Ours is automatic. In fact it is a bit of a pain -- we need to learn how to disable it so we can take the phone and leave the car and continue the call. I am sure it is possible.

I'll guess you are missing a step at either the phone or the car end.

Is the phone set for Bluetooth all the time? Might go to airplane mode or some phone that does it automatically once the link or pairing is broken between car and phone.
Really weird though - it should be automatic after first step is established.

I think I found the problem.

There is a security setting in the phone that specified how the phone acts when it "finds" a previously paired device. The choices are 1) always connect or 2) ask before connnecting. My phone was set to "ask before connecting" but I changed it to "always connect" and it seems to be working now.

...and if it WAS somehow asking me before for permission to connect, I didn't know it or what to do.

www.wireless4bmw.com is a web site with all approved bluetooth phones, if your phone is not on this list and the i-drive locks up or the tcu gets fried it will not be covered under the terms of bmw new car limited warranty.
