Does anybody use Amisol 0w30 at the track, impressions, experiences good or bad? A buddy of mine said he blew his drag bike motor useing this oil. I just switched from 15w40 natural oil and my '97 M3 seems to run great, quieter and revs quicker.:dunno

I used to autox using it without issue. A couple years later I switched back to Mobil1 5W-30 only because it was easier to get at the local Walmart in the 5 qt. jug for $18. The difference between OW and 5W is only during extreme cold weather startup anyways.

How did your buddy come to the conclusion that it was the oil that caused his motor to blow up?

I think it had something to do with how two of his other friends also had engine failures using Amsoil 0w30. But, you know, I'm still going to use it, I like the way my car sounds and runs with it. There's a big difference between a drag bike motor and an M-motor. It all could have been a coincidence and had nothing to do with the oil.

15/50 is a minimum track oil.

i'm not suprised that 0/30 blew engines

I use 15W50 for the track now. I got rid of that 0w30 after a short time. Too many people told me it was too thin.

Well I've been an advocate of 0W-30 even though most mechanics say it's too thin. I get better gas mileage, less wear and tear since the oil gets to the parts the quickest.

But when doing auto-crossing, the E36 M3s have that notorious valve ticking under heavy cornering and the 0W-30 makes it worse. So on my next oil change I will switch to AMSOIL 10W-40 and see how it makes my engine sound.

I've had no problems using Amsoil 0W-30.

Make sure to always keep the oil level above the "high" mark on the dipstick and change it at least every 3K-4K miles then you will be fine.

I always add an extra 1qt before auto-xing and it still ticks. And every 3-4k is overkill for my tastes. I change it every 6k. That's the idea of synthetic.

there's plenty of serious race engines/teams using 0W30 oil

I can show you plenty of engines that have blown with 15W50 oil too

I ran Amsoil 0W30 in my 95 M3, I had none-very little ticking in autox when using an overfill. If your oil level is insufficient it won't matter what weight oil you are using. The 0 weight only occurs when cold, which is ideal when starting a stone cold engine. There are a number of 0Wxx racing oils now too.

but bear in mind, race teams main objective is getting the highest HP... not engine longevity

and prob for those team that can afford it, they prob strip the engine and recondition it if necessary after a certain period... regradless of whether it has blown or not

just my 2c's

cheers :)

After comparing the oil manufacturers' specs, it was hard not to go with Mobil1 0W-40, I just switched to it for the colder months from M1 15W-50. At the track, engine oil should easily/quickly get up to the high viscosity number (40 in my case), which should address the E36 oil pick-up/lifter ticking problem better than 30 weights.

Just my .02, I haven't run it on track w/0W-40 yet but will in a couple weeks.
