Sounds like the height adjustment to me? It's required by law in some countries to have height adjustable headlights to avoid blinding other drivers when your car is heavily loaded. Nowadays with Xenon lights this is all automatically, but in the old days there was a simple dial in the cockpit that allowed the driver to adjust the height.

Fascinating. What spec cars have such a dial?

EURO spec and as far as I know J-spec as well. The dial is on the right side of the instrument pod, next to the foglight switch. The EURO headlight assemblies have an additional electric motor in them to turn the adjuster screw to the correct setting. A real neat feature.

My UK car has it, dial is below the heated rear window button. Cant put a pic on until tomorrow tho.

My car has the switch also, It has a picture of a light on it and i think 3 cliks for numbers 1 thru 3? My cars are US though. I never new what it was for, Time to investigate.

J-spec lights will work also, but the glass lense is somewhat different and the low beam projector does not have the selector switch on it.

I have it on both my 8's. Very cool feature. I believe some countries require you to use it in tunnels. It's called "Dipped Lights" and is actually a feature on new vehicles as well, in the middle east at least.
