I wonder, do the sport seats have upper back adjust akin to E38s (both comfort and sport) and (highline leather w/ comfort seats) E39s and X5s?:shifty

I wonder, do the sport seats have upper back adjust akin to E38s (both comfort and sport) and (highline leather w/ comfort seats) E39s and X5s?:shiftyNo. Items the sport seats offer over the regular seats:
- Higher and stiffer bolsters.
- Adjustable knee support (the middle section extends).

Items on the regular seats that were not available for the sport seats:
- Optional adjustable lumbar support.

Below two excellent pictures to show the difference. The driver's seat is a regular E31 seat while the passenger seat is replaced with a sport seat.

(Pictures taken from M850CSi.com - 850i Sport Seat Conversion (http://m850csi.com/wp/850i-sport-seat-conversion/))

Personally I find the sport seats more comfy and obviously they offer better support while cornering.

Interesting! Thanks for the info.

I wonder if could one cross fit the lumbar from one to the other.:shifty If I ever get a hold of a set of seat I am going to look into that possibility.

Bad news... (http://forums.roadfly.com/forums/bmw/bmw-8-series-e31/4515603-1.html) (by Schnarri @ Roadfly)
There is a simple reason why BMW never offered this combination... There`s not enough space to add a lumbar support. Altough a friend did it, but it needs lot of modifications inside the seat like removing parts of the upholstery and changing holding devices for the modules.

No pics, sorry. I think he removed it after having some probs with it (f. e. the upholstery became to thin, seat was really uncomfortable, bursting seams after short time of use). I asked him long time ago because I wanna get some lumbar support too (also got sport seats). Then he told me about the procedures ("nightmare") and the probs and so I left the seat like it is.

If you need lumbar support that badly then you could probably do the air bladder type lumbar with minimal change to the seat and actually put it in the spot that matched where you need it :)

i've got friends over there. mail is not just faster than in most of europe, it's cheaper too.
course, that is all different with a freight company.

Here is how "used parts" works:
Depending on how "rare" and discontinued an item is, the going rate is anywhere from 35% (usually on common stuff) all the way up to 50% or so of list price.
I don't know if anyone has priced a complete seat lately (if you could still get them from the dealer), but $6200 a piece for the sport seat is about what they add up to.
Given the fact that my Sport Seats have been completely refurbished leather and mechanical wise, I think it is a good price.
With that said, the price is set where it is, so that if I do part with them, it will be worth my while.

Hmmmmm..... both my cars (Canadian spec E31's) have sport seats as some Canadian cars were ordered that was as an option. Not sure what all the excitement is about with my Murrican friends south of the border as it relates to these seats. Unless you are a slim dapper dude and definitely not a widebottom, these seats will not fit you and you will be resting a butt cheek or two on a seat bolster and that aint comfy over a long distance. With sports seats you fit "in" them, not on them.
Fortunately (for me anyways) I am a svelte 32" waist and fit nicely.

Wuffer--How are you fixed with parts for that? :)

Glad that I don't feel the need for sports seats being a "Murrican" wide butt myself :(

I never knew that the sports seats don't have a lumbar bladder. Weird. I like fiddlin' with the lumbar on my seat. It makes long drives real comfy.

i don't care too much about the lumbar thing... but what i like is the tighter seat.
and the bolster in front... maybe one can fit the bottom piece of a later model.
they look similar anyway

how about AHK, rear sunshade, trailer hitch, auxillary heater, in-cabin headlight aiming...

the list does go on, just a matter of parts availability and $$$ since the wiring should already be there...

Can you buy just the seatback bolsters and fit them onto a non-sport seat when reupholstering? They appear to be about the same size in terms of mounting constraints. I too enjoy my lumbar support...

TxGR8White
07-22-2008, 10:48 PM
The difference in the 2 seats isn't the seatback, but the seat bottom. I believe the frame bottoms are slightly different also. I haven't compared the two side by side yet.

Bryson
07-22-2008, 10:51 PM
I mean just the left and right bolsters in the seatback, providing hip support over the nonsport seats.
I can live without what looks to be minimal thigh support on these seats anyway. If it's possible to order the bolsters and make a frankenseat I may be interested in that route

Bryson
07-22-2008, 10:55 PM
AHA! According to realoem.com, the seatbacks are the same part number between the sport/nonsport seats. this would allow one to add the seatback bolsters of the sport seat to the nonsport, in theory, as they can also be ordered individually.
