View Full Version : CSI Front Lip - Destroyed by Mechanic
bRIZZAd 07-09-2008, 01:14 AM Sooooo... I've read the story a few times on Roadfly before, and now it's happened to me. I replaced the front lip when I bought the car, as the previous owner and destroyed it. Unfortunately now I took her in for an oil change, and the mechanic managed to crack the front spoiler on each side of the wide mouth opening air intake. Grrrrrr!! I had to wait 5 weeks for that to come from Germany & another month or so to wait for an opening at a body shop to install & paint. And now 5 months later it's in the same state.
I'm going to call Gault tomorrow, I'm hoping they stock some ... as all local BMW dealers in Canada here don't seem to and it's a lengthly wait for it to come from overseas. The shop I go to was wanting to go the route of plastic welding it. Though when I asked around at local body shops about my old CSI bumper, no one reccommended it, as they would not guarantee the welding from breaking again. Anyone had success with this on their 8? I'm going to insist on the entire part being replace of course, but was curious what other's have done in this situation?
The unfortunate part is that the car is not exactly driveable now. It was low to begin with, but now it's over an inch lower and will scrape on anything. I had planned on a road trip in 5 weeks time, and was looking forward to summer driving finally. Sooo..... mad...... ugh! :( :mad
TheAnimal117 07-09-2008, 01:31 AM Are they gonna pay for it at least? They better...
bRIZZAd 07-09-2008, 02:07 AM Oh, they will be paying for it. Just the hassle of dealing with a body shop's wait time now, etc... more of a pain in the butt than anything else.
8eights 07-09-2008, 04:41 AM Sorry to here this Brad, Rane with the white 8 and Lambo doors had great success with repairing his, I believe his contact info would be in his sig pic.
///M3Vader4dr 07-09-2008, 04:48 AM sucks d00d...your car is still sweet though
prit singh 07-09-2008, 05:06 AM Hi
i cant believe this is happening all over with these cars. I dont trust many with my car and i am wondering how im going to get my car M.O.T with out the tester doing some damage to my scoop. Its already slightly cracked in the middle as it is extremely lower than standard and sometimes hits the drive ground. I'm considering strengthing the front spoiler some how and using a special flexi compound that will allow some flexibility.
Good Luck
Toy72 07-09-2008, 08:04 AM Prit,
post your results with this, very interesting.
Brad,
That sucks, dude. But as long as they are footing the bill. Hope it's ready in time for your trip. Good Luck!!!
wokke 07-09-2008, 05:33 PM why five weeks delivery time from Germany? Travel time is normally 2 weeks and either BMW has it in stock and can deliver immediately or they don't and then even five weeks are not enough. Let me know if you want me to check the availability (part# please) with my local (German) BMW dealer.
Cheers
Wolf
TxGR8White 07-09-2008, 06:02 PM When I ordered mine it was 5 days (not weeks). Get the dealer to order it "VOR" which means that the car is on the rack in the shop and BMW will put a rush on it -plus it should cost YOU any additional money.
Koizumi 07-09-2008, 09:18 PM Took me a quick 4 days from Gault in NY all the way to SoCal.
PS. I hope it all works out for you.
Toy72 07-10-2008, 08:16 AM 6 days from gault to my APO address overseas:). Charlie said the hardest part was finding a box for my goodies
bRIZZAd 07-11-2008, 01:51 AM Not sure why it took 5 weeks before (though I'm in Canada).
I talked to Charlie @ Gault, and he could have one to me much quicker for $669.00 (part only, excluding shipping). That's one hell of a deal, as I paid close to $1000.00 a year ago, and about $400 to paint amongst a couple other items.
The shop wanted to plastic weld the cracks, so that is the route they went. I did want them to guarantee that they won't break, and if they do... they're replacing the part outright for me. I'll need to get that in writing.
I see it this way... if you walk into a strangers house and break their $1400.00 vase, do you offer to glue it back together.... or replace it entirely?
8eights 07-11-2008, 02:13 AM Have him pay you for it like he's suppose to and fix it, That's easy to fix if all the damage is what's in the pictures.
Doug C 07-11-2008, 02:30 AM sorry for the newb question, but is that just a lip or diffrent front bumper than stock??
8eights 07-11-2008, 02:33 AM I'ts a CSi lower front spoiler, Bolts right on to all 8's.
bRIZZAd 07-14-2008, 08:36 PM So just a quick follow up to this post...
I picked up my ride today after their body shop had completed the plastic welding. Last week I had told them I did not want it plastic welded, unless they would guarantee the work (i.e: if the plastic welds were to break, I wanted the spoiler replaced entirely as that to me would be an obvious indication the part was weakened too much).
So I had an opportunity to speak with the manager/owner of the shop "Two Square" Auto Repair (http://www.germancarspecialist.com/). Not only would he not guarantee the work in writing, he only wanted to argue with me. Eventually he even called my car "$hitty" to my face. Unbelievable. :confused
So in case anyone is looking for service on their 850 in Calgary, Alberta... beware of this place! The fix looks fine and am happy with that result, but being treated like that and not getting the guarantee in writing like I had asked for is certainly not something I was happy with.
I'll take photos to finish up the post soon, ... just having the headliner re-upholstered now though.
Koizumi 07-14-2008, 09:05 PM Idiots. I'm sorry to hear about the unpleasant interaction. Hopefully your lip will be ok. I've had a few bad experiences myself (not with my 8, but with my 750). The owner of a very famous BMW repair shop here in Los Angeles told me that my 7 was a piece of shit. Suffice to say, details excluded, he limped home after he destroyed that car (yes, you read that right... He destroyed it).
TTTXGreg 07-14-2008, 11:10 PM Take the car out and run it up to 120mph+ and see if it holds. They would have bought a new piece if it were mine, no questions. I'm with you on the vase thing. Glued back together is not the same. I would be afraid to see the underside to see what they did. Whole thing could be glued on and not removable anymore!? Hope not.
