View Full Version : opinions on auto-x suspension
i'm still thinking about this since I maybe able to free up some funds due to my new job. I was thinking about installing the GC track school kit/Camber plates or just adding some koni SA's valved to my eibach pro-kits and the 96+strut hats swapped (similar to the dinan suspension). I feel that the bilsteins that I have on are not the best shock for what I do. I am not trying to be national champion, just be a little more competitive. This is kind of hard to do since John in Houston is in my class. My car is no longer a daily driver, but I do drive it on the weekends with the fiancee.
gsober 06-02-2003, 03:04 PM i purchased Johns "old" set-up (bilsteins/h&r's). I ran a few AX and felt the same as you do (and John), too soft. I just put on the GC track/school kit with sways. My first AX is this Sunday. I just put everything on the car on Sunday (thanks vjlax18) and love it. well woth the money. i will let you how it feels after sunday!!!
DocWyte 06-02-2003, 07:23 PM I've been very happy with the koni sa's and stock springs, stock sways on my '95 m3. We're very competitive with the guys running full coilovers...
John in Houston 06-03-2003, 08:12 AM BJO... thanks for the kind words... but please remember that seat time is the best mod... and I most likely have alot more than you:). You are moving up the rungs pretty damn quickly... so don't worry about that right now;)
As for the suspension... personally, I think that you probably could get some SAs and then talk to Tunnell about some spring rates rather than going with the GC setup.
However, with that being said, I think that by the time you figure out what the good setup is, then you will have spent more time and $$ than you would have if you went with the GC setup in the first place.
I waited quite some time before purchasing the GC setup. Teucci had quite a few weekends into his car before I purchased. After seeing the results and quantifying it, the GC setup was an easy decision.
I thought (and still do) that the H&R and Eibach spring solutions were too soft for auto-x, regardless of your damper choice. The car needs a higher spring rate than what is currently offered. The only solution I could find was a coil-over setup where I could go to any circle-track outlet and get any spring rate in 25# increments.
I don't consider myself a GC whore (that's Frayed's job:laugh )... but the product is pretty damn good. The only issue I currently have is the bearing in the CC Plate... and Teucci is currently working to correct that with better quality parts. (yes, I drive my car daily. Yes I know it's a 'race' piece. I also know that I had spherical bearing plates in my mustang for 4 years and never had an issue with bearings... and the spring and damper rates were hella-higher than the M3's).
Anyway, let me know if there is anything I can help you with.

Actually, I believe Mr. Sober was talking about me... the 'other' John :astromile
I was  because I helped him install his suspension - he thanked me for it.
John, thanks for the compliments and advice. You have been very helpful and and I appreciate that. I am really leaning toward the GC kit since I may have a buyer for my bilsteins and eibachs. I am also thinking about using swapped 96+strut hats on the GC's to cut the cost down, until I see the camber plates that Teucci has made.

I don't believe he is making camber plates... only replacing the bearings with higher quality (re: mo $$$) bearings. His lasted 3 events. Mine started clunking after the last SCCA event.
Of course, he could be making plates...

I just swapped hats AND left the 2 washers in there.... I have LOTS of negative camber now.... LOTS.

vjlax18 06-03-2003, 09:35 AM HA, us 3 computer geeks can beat up that Gsober Meat Head!!!
He made me install his suspension... I had to do all the work:(
gsober 06-03-2003, 11:00 AM come on now. you made me eat Mc Donald's. it was good. i am not a meat head.
///Mracer 06-03-2003, 04:00 PM If you feel you have a soft setup with spring rate, why not try some stiffer sways?
I run koni SA's and H&R sports which by itself is a soft setup, I added some UUC sways over the winter and set them at medium stiff front, full stiff rear and the car feels A LOT STIFFER. I have had really good success so far this year with this set up.
Now I can practically dial out understeer or oversteer (which ever the case is for that particular track/day) with tire pressure and adjusting the Koni's.
Just my thoughts
Tommy R 06-03-2003, 04:16 PM Oh man.... So I start looking into this whole Bimmer thing and happen across these forums. "Hey, a racing forum," methinks to meself. "Coolness! Let's see what's going on there...."
And who do I see? Teucci, John, and Chuck.... All fellow ex-Mustang fanatics who've changed camps. :12: Now I'm thinking.......what in the hell have I gotten myself into? :D
Of course, I'll be the lone E30 guy in the mix, but at least I'd already planned on the G-C stuff. That's worth some credibility points, right?? :12:

Wait a sec - aren't you the guy who found the H&R springs to be too harsh, so went to the Eibach Pro-Kits? The GC setup isn't magic - stiffer springs are going to make the ride harsher, no matter which manufacturer has their logo on the parts.
Jim
Jim, that was me. however, the car is no longer my daily driver so it doesn't matter too much. the H&R's along with the bilsteins were pretty harsh as other people here with that combo will tell you. the eibach's and bilsteins are a little better, but the shock has too much compression valving and not enough rebound. I know the GC kit isn't magic, but I would like a spring/shock combo that is better matched than anything off the shelf. Do you have any recommendations?
//mracer: i have upgraded my sways to the eibach ones. i have played around with the settings and can dial oversteer/understeer, but transitional response isn't really there.
singletrack1 06-04-2003, 03:07 PM I used to have the H&R sport/bilstein setup and now have GC with twice the spring rates and the car rides *much* better. Probably something to do with more suspension travel and less bump. It handles better too!
