TIA RPM3 06-02-2003, 01:59 AM My friend runs those Falken Azenis tires. They are really good tires. If I remember correctly they are dot rated for Auto-X. Really sticky tires. One bad point is that if you Auto-X is that they tend to overheat too quick. Wear on the tires is real fast too... Try looking into the Khumo MX...which is also supposed to be approved for Auto-X. From what I've read they can widthstand heat better than the Azenis. Either way you go...I think you'll be happy with the tires...great performing tires. ///3oris 06-02-2003, 02:17 AM A lot of my friends run those daily... the only problem is that they wear down too fast. One of my friends is running Yokohama Paradas on the other hand... he said they used to wear down really fast until he increased his tire pressure to maximum... he definitely pushes that car in the twisties, and so far has had them for 50k miles (2 years) with mucho tread left.... don't-ask-how.... but guess what my next set of tires will be? Boris EDIT: Oh yeah... and ofcourse they don't make the paradas in our sizes.... great! (at least I couldnt find htem :(). badmonkey 06-02-2003, 02:28 AM Originally posted by ///3oris Boris EDIT: Oh yeah... and ofcourse they don't make the paradas in our sizes.... great! Seems to have adequate grip for daily duty. magruder 06-02-2003, 12:38 PM Thanx guys. I know the Azenis wear fast, but they are very cheap for such a great tire. Yes, tire pressures are critical - esp. in AutoX. I had Yoko ES100's on my E30 325is. Nice tires, better wear but not as sticky and sidewalls were softer in hard turns. Still a great tire @ a great price. BADMONKEY- where did you get the shot of "Bricktop" ??? Erik@EDGE 06-02-2003, 12:58 PM Approved for Street Tire classes. Not all tires are legal. Def 06-02-2003, 07:24 PM Originally posted by Reid What do you mean by "approved for Auto-X"? Any tire can be used for autocross. Tires have to be DOT approved unless you're in a Prepared or Mod class(note, this is FAR different than Street Prepared or Street Mod). There are slicks out there that are not DOT approved, but stick with almost physics-defying grip. No idea where the hell you'd buy 'em, but they're out there. kitwetzler 06-02-2003, 08:06 PM The Azenis Sport is a great tire. I love mine. The 225/45r17 is about as large or a little larger due to squared off shoulders, than a 245/40r17 S-03 (at least on an 8" rim) The AVS-es100s were fine for the first few thou miles but got really noisy and lasted about 8K miles. I got 20K out of my S-03s. :( the ES100s roll over and die when you abuse them on the track, too. I really like the Azenis Sports so far. I've got about 3K miles on them and they still look brand new. Def 06-02-2003, 08:40 PM Originally posted by kitwetzler The Azenis Sport is a great tire. I love mine. I was really contemplating getting these, but most people said I would do better to look other places, even after I tried to tell them the Azenis run quite large for the rated size' I'm on ES100's right now and they're doing pretty good. The outer treadblocks are getting hurt pretty bad now that I'm running less negative camber, but I didn't think they were all that bad. It's a toss-up between 225/45-17 Azenis all around or 225/45 and 245/40-17 Kumho MX's next time around(which is fairly far in the future). Although I'm trying to source some 17x8.5" LTW wheels to run up front, so I don't know which tire I'd go with then. jdmorris 06-03-2003, 09:06 PM One of the instructors was running 225/45 Azenis on his rear 17x8.5s at T-Hill a while back. They looked to be about the same width as 245 SO3's. I almost took some pics for my own future reference, but forgot. I've been considering the Falkens for track tires but am concerned about how they'll handle heat. Any feedback would be appreciated. And as for Yokohama Paradas, I can only say that the 225/40-18's that came with my M3 suck bad. It may just be their age, but the AVSi's I normally run have significantly more grip and are much quieter at the limit (the Paradas cry and scream through the corners). The Paradas definitely don't wear out, though - 350 miles at the track has only worn 2 or 3/32's off them and my best efforts to beat the life out of them over the last 2000 miles on the street has done almost nothing. My AVS Intermediates, on the other hand, are down to 5/32's after just 4500 miles. RyanC 06-04-2003, 12:45 PM I had no problems with the Azenis going away due to heat, and I put them thru 30 minute sessions at the Glen with 100 degree ambient temps. Lasted about 11k miles I'd guess, including a lot of track time. The sidewalls are stiffer than the MX, but the Azenis is noticably heaver than the Kumho. Texas M3/4 06-05-2003, 02:14 PM Just a heads up but "supposedly" (you never know with salemen types sometimes) Falkan is coming out with a new version of the Azenis Sport before too long. The tire is actually like 7 years old because it was out overseas for years before they brought it over. This was in response to my question to a Falkan rep at the Mazda Rev It Up Challenge as to whether they will ever make more sizes in the Azenis Sport. He did not give an estimated date to take this for what you will. Supposedly the new tire will be in more sizes than currently offered. I'm currently running the MXs. Very happy with them and they are VERY light tire wise. Wear seems average though. I'm hoping to get 12-15k miles out of them and I'm not *that* hard on them. I got low-mid 20s out of my 712s for a point of reference. Brad |
