I just picked up a 2005 x3 (11/04 production date) for my wife. I'm trying to get the bluetooth to work. I checked in the left rear compartment, the radio gizmo back there has the bluetooth symbol on it. The car has the premium package and BMW assist.

When I turn the key on, the radio display never shows "Active Phone". If I hit the R/T button the wheel, it says "Phonebook empty". I've done a lot of searching, read the manuals, etc...and I can't find an answer to this. Someone posted that if the radio never displays "Active Phone" that you need a software upgrade. Is this true? What specifically needs to be upgraded?

you dont need jack,

first you need the passkey, look at the BT unit in the back and next to PK you will see 4 digits. thats your passkey for BT

now turn key to position 1, go to your phone and do a search for BT, you will see BMWBT**** thats the radio, sync to it and enter the passkey code. and set your fone to handset using the radio, now you are done.

I have the PK, it was in the owner's manual. From what I read, when you turn the key to position 1, the radio display should say "Activate Phone" or something like that, it doesn't say anything, just turns on the radio. When I search for BT with my ATT Tilt and Samsung phones, it doesn't find anything. That is what is making me think that the BT isn't even active.

I've sync'd with other phones in the past, and even removed and readded my BT headset to make sure that my phone could find BT sources.

well mine doesnt say activate until i hold down the button with the dude speaking the <))) looking one, hold it for like 2 secs and it says acitvate

What's the production date of yours? When I hit the R/T button it just says "phone book empty", I'll have to try holding the <))) button down.
