I recently came across a 530 with a blown engine at the shop. I want to swap out the old motor with a M60 engine and the stock 5 speed trans with a 6 speed 540 trans (unless the old trans will work, which iam sure it won't). I was just wondering if this is a worth while project, if anyone has done this, has any advice, and know of any other parts/modifications off hand that iam ganna need. If anyone knows anything about this, please let me know before i start this project because this is going to take alot of my time and money to complete. Thanks!

Hey, welcome to the board. The engine in the 530 and the 540 share the same code, M60. The differences are in the displacement (among other things...) where it's designated B30 or B40. Do you want to swap the M60B30 (530i) motor for the M60B40 and keep the 5 speed or are you looking to swap the 4.0L and the 6 speed trans? The 5 speed manual will work if you can't get your hands on a 6 speed. There is more than a handful of people that have done this swap, search the E34 section for their threads.

I want to use a 540 engine and if the original trans will work i would want to use that to save a couple of bucks. Will the 5 speed really work with the 540 engine?

I have a rebuildable M62 with wiring harness that would work with this project.

PM me or email travlr2010 at gmail / com

Why not just buy a good E34 540?? It would be a lot less hassle and probably less expensive in the end.
